Companion Mod Compatability

If I were to make a companion mod, which scripting template would be the one to base compatability with? I recently discovered some are not compatable with others as there was a crash on saving. I've not spent a great deal of time researching this and was hoping someone has already done the hard yards and could give a definitive answer as to which scripting method for companions is the one to focus on so as to make it compatable with the bulk of mods.
