Companion problems...

Post » Mon Jan 25, 2016 12:41 pm

Usually I run around with the dog, he can be helpful, but for the most part if I'm not with him I'd rather go it alone. However, even if I wanted to travel with the dog I finally got tired of him recently and sent him packing... Sadly let's face it, I think Bethesda dropped the ball on these companions. The stupid dog waits til i enter a 1 room door then waits in the door way so i can't get out, then at times he runs by while i'm trying to loot so it changed the loot menu, sadly he does both of these quite often, I had to shoot him once to get him out of the doorway because he wasn't even responding to the stupid go over there command...

However, I have not tried traveling with any other companions except the detective during his missions, now my problem with him was he took off, and got into fights in places I had no idea where he was.. Seriously, what's the point of these guys? I'm officially a lone wanderer thanks to the stupidity of these companions.

Anyone else having these problems?

Companion problems are part and parcel of Beth RPG's. If anything, some problems from FO3 and Skyrim have been swapped for FO4 specific problems, such as wandering around while sneaking, and getting in front of you, or the personal space problem.

If you 'lose' a companion, fast travel somewhere, sleep or wait somewhere, that generally brings them back to you.

Yes I have these problems too, but not to the extend you describe. I am enjoying companions myself. You should understand how companion AI works and predict a little bit when working with them. For example Dogmeat is programmed to run bit in front of you in normal mode while stay bit behind you in sneak mode. Other thing is to actively use command interface. If you don't want companion to stand in a doorway or run in front of containers you are looting then tell him to stay away or send him somewhere else. You can do it at the distance.

Unfortunately command interface, while bit better then in Fallout 3, still svcks. Having to click on your companion to issue command is clunky. You can however keep companion selected and still be able to loot or open the doors.

Depending, certain NPCs are programmed to prefer long range or short range, so they may wonder off a bit further, especially with enemies nearby, Curie is more close range due to her robotic body, and she still has the same AI even after her personal quest. MacCready is long range since he's a sniper. Strong is more in your face meelee. If they lock into a fight, they wouldn't move until the fight is over, but once you're too far, they would teleport straight to you.

Well, already posted something like this in another thread, but I may say this: In Skyrim we had companions like FO 4, but if we told them to wait, they will protect themselves if hostiles came too close. We could also make companion protect the player in such way that companion only attack the hostiles who attacks the player. In FO 4 we have no such options, we can ask companion to wait, but they will not protect themselves and if they follow they attack everything that is "red". If player tries to run away a little, companion will not follow, but still attack. Companions in FO 4 should behave like the companions we have in Skyrim as example.

A companion should stay behind the player, it's so annoying every time you try to aim with missile launcher, companion(s) sneak in front of the player. Companions also have the habit to set off the traps as well even player is skilled enough to avoid any traps. Sometimes when you try to sneak, companion loose the direction and jumps down from height and aggro everything that is below.

Cheers,

I have decided to only use companions until I get the perk I want from them, and then go it alone. They are too annoying when you are trying to sneak around and they blunder into things.
