Companion questions in general...

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 7:48 pm

Hi. I usually like to walk the wastes alone, but I'd like to do the companion quests so I took ED-E and Veronica (I loves her).

What's annoying about them is even though I set them to passive they still open fire on ememies even if I don't. I would run away from certain things but they just charge in. Why do they do that?

Also, is there a way I can get them to equip whatever armour I want? I want Veronica to take off that aweful burlap sack she wears, but she will only remove it for medium and heavy armour. I'd prefer to wear light, is there any light stuff she will wear?

Also, I'd prefer her to to use ranged weapons. I read on the wiki she has a high energy weapon skill but no matter what I give her she insists on using her 10mm pistol. I seem to remember reading something about "make sure you upgrade your companion's gear and keep them stocked up on ammo." Why does it say that when they don't require ammo for their weapons and they won't use any weapon other than their defualt one?

One final question about Veronica. When I first spoke to her and went through all her dialog she mentioned the elder sending her a message from a comm station but I didn't get a quest. No quest shows up on my qest list but if she dies it says "quest failed: I could make you care." Is it supposed to be listed or do I have to do something first? The wiki says further dialogs with her are triggered at certain places, will it show up when one of them happens or is it bugged?

Many thanks.

I found Veronica so buggy. She tends to run to everything. I played with her only to get me self a safe passage to brotherhood bunker. I knew where the place is and just went there, no quest, no nothing.
Companions are different, while Boone is able to wear almost every armour, cause he doesn't have a default one, other don't. They have some preferences. I like to play with Cass now and she doesn't want to wear light armour, so I left her with her cute default outfit.
About weapon preferences, I am not sure about Veronica, Cass always takes any weapon I give her, of course with the proper ammo. They don't use ammo only with their default weapon.
Later in the game, after some companion quest, Veronica is going to upgrade her outfit to a better one, I used her to enter the bunker and then gave her some looted brotherhood armour, so now she is safe in the wilderness. :)

OK lots of questions, I can't answer all of them but I can give a few of them a try :)

Even when set to passive, if an enemy spots you OR your companions and starts to come towards your position, your companions WILL enter combat even if your weapon is still holstered and you're trying to run/sneak away. They have some self-preservation instinct!

They don't need ammo for their default weapon, if you give them a different weapon that requires ammo you will need to keep them supplied with ammo, or they will switch back to default.

They will only use a weapon that is better (taking into account their tagged skills) than their default weapon. The same goes for armour/clothing.

Cheers man. I'm assuming there's a brotherhood bunker at Hidden Valley, but I've searched it and there's nothing there. I'm guessing I need Veronica with me to find it? Can I do that at any time or is it part of the main quest?

Ohh, you can take Cass?! She's my favorite character so far. She's gorgeous. Do you have to follow her quest before you can recruit her, because I spoke to her at the bar and didn't get an option to take her.

Thanks again.

That answers that. Thanks.

Oh yeah you can recruit Cass, I can't recall how I did it but I was on a Crimson Caravan quest where I had to go visit her and it might have involved a speech check in dialogue to get her to join me. I got her personal quest after I recruited her. But she is ace AND she has good sneak skill, so you don't have to worry so much about her alerting nearby enemies. I never go anywhere without her.

Yes you can recruit Cass after some of her quests. There is a stage when you need to pass speech or barter check, that is the point when she is allowed to follow you.

Brotherhood bunker is always there, not sure if you will be able to enter it without Veronica or some check. I mean you can see the door and you can go there no mater the main quest. I used some video posted here on forums how to find it, cause there are like 3 more bunkers in the same area. Just get her, use her relations to BOS and get inside. I am a paladin now, so they are cool :)

WRT the Brotherhood bunker - You can enter either if you have Veronica with you OR if you found an entry code/password on a dead BOS patrol - there is one in the REPCONN Headquarters building, I found that while following ED-E's quest, but as I understand it there are others in the game.

Slightly off-topic, but still Veronica-related.

I'm still early (I think) in my 1st playthrough. Veronica is the only companion I've encountered.

Since she obviously prefers unarmed fighting, I gave her the "Love and Hate" spiked knuckles and she squealed with delight. :tops:

It's a joy to watch her cut big bugs in half with them.....

I love her responses. "Have you got something for me? Ahhh, is it a dress!?"

They don't need ammo for their default weapon, if you give them a different weapon that requires ammo you will need to keep them supplied with ammo, or they will switch back to default.

They will only use a weapon that is better (taking into account their tagged skills) than their default weapon. The same goes for armour/clothing.

I'm not sure they use ammo at all - in fact, there's a mod on the Nexus forums that makes companions use ammo.

They will use whatever weapon has the highest DPS (not DAM). So, if you dump a bunch of weapons into someone like Veronica's inventory - you'll find her using a low-DAM high-DPS weapon, and not doing much against armored enemies. I've had her use the Assault Carbine over her default 10mm. I've given her a 44 magnum (fully repaired) but I need to double-check that she's using it.

Unfortunately, they're not smart enough to use different ammo types. So look through the wiki, find the highest DPS gun that is better then their default weapon which has a high DAM. So things like the 44 magnum pistol or the Trail Carbine are probably good choices.

(I recently gave Veronica the "Pusher" unique fist weapon... I'll see the big blue flash going off all the time as she'll switch to that when enemies get within melee range.)

If you have Veronica - you need to visit a few key locations. You'll know you hit one if she says one of her one-liners. At a guess... the Mormon Fort, McCarren and Helios One would be key locations to drag her to. I've had her say a one-liner there as she comments on what is going on at that location.

It's a shame you can't take Veronica's and Cass' standard clothing of them (wich you can do with boon). I wanted them to walk around in sixy Sleepwear in my lucky 38 suite =(

You can get to the bunker in the story mission where they want you to side with them, or like the NCR, destory them. With house, NCR, and yes man you will go to the hidden vally eventually.

When she says something, does she say it as soon as you enter the place, or does it take a while? The wiki says she says something in Nipton but she never does with me (but it's after I first got there and spoke to the legion guys) and the Repcon Test Site, I went in there but nothing. Does it have to be the first time you go there, or should it work on subsequent times also?

Many thanks for the replies.

I like Veronica a lot as a character (she's totally my kind of girl actually), and I got her to wear reinforced leather armour, a metal helmet and I gave her a cowboy repeater. I'm pretty sure she does use ammo. Sometimes she switches to her melee weapon but then goes back to her rifle, so it works pretty well.

Looking forward to taking Cass though, shes my favorite character so far. I'll take her on my next playthrough (if she doesn't have an annoying perk (I find Boone's perk annoying because I don't like the red haze over targets when I have him).

Is there any way you can tell what other skills a companion have? For instance can you tell how well they can sneak? They go into sneak mode when I do, but how well are they sneaking?

Does your Veronica actually benefit from armour without mod? I check her DT in console with T-51b and it was 7(!)

ALL companions have infinite ammo on their default weapons only! If you give them a better weapon (you will know as they will equip it) you must keep them supplied with ammo for it. Example: I gave Cass the riot shot gun and when she ran out of ammo she would holler "running out of ammo here" and switch to her default gun or melee weapon depending on the situation.

Have fun!

I don't know. I've noticed her armour and weapon don't wear out.

Does anyone else know what her DT is in various armour? If you have living anatomy you could see presumably.
