Companion relationships?

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 10:52 am

So I'm trying to understand the specifics as to how building relationships work. For the sake of curiosity (and there is an achievement for it).

How exactly do they build up. I can understand well enough that your actions in general will have an impact on it, but what are the other factors? Are some quest involved for specific companions? Does helping the faction they're with also help? And most importantly, do they have to be you to build them and you have to do certain things with them around? It would be a shame if that was the case considering my reasons why I don't want them around. I'd think it would be reasonable enough that you can build a likable relationship with them by them simply knowing of your deeds and actions and liking you because of it.

Anyone experienced with companions enough or far enough in the game to explain this to me?

I'm curious about this as well. Especially when it comes to Codsworth cause I have no idea how I got disapproval with him after the Concord settler rescue. I asked him about his relationship with Vivian and it doesn't seem to be in good standing. Which is strange since I've been nice to him and only asked questions regarding the missed 200 years.

I just romance Piper. You'll want to at least get the lady killer/black widow perk to be able to flirt. With Piper you just have to help people . I can't speak on everyone else.

well, i DO know they have to be around you to know, since you know...........they need to SEE and hear what you are doing to like or dislike it beyond some exceptions. Most of the companions seem to be evil is another thing, like a lot of Bethesda games, none of the companions seem to like you doing "evil" stuff

Also, something to point out, Dogmeat does not care, he will never like or dislike anything you do.

Oh really? I accidentally misclicked on psycho with Piper in my pary once but didn't notice a disapproval message..

Damn, well at least I must have gotten a bit back from quests, I did notice when she liked something.

On that note, I just watned to mention that while traveling with her she initiated a conversation on her own after fast-traveling where she talked about her background and asked if you agree.

No idea if that matters in the romancing of her, but it's there.

So far I've noticed Codsworth doesn't like it if you give Mama Murphy any chems.

I haven't had him along as a companion, he's just been wandering the neighbourhood. I don't think he could 'see' me - he was way at the other end of Sanctuary.

But he really liked it when I did some more advanced crafting mods to my armour. I didn't notice anything when I did gun mods.

So, I dunno what the %&$@ he wants from me!

Doing crafting often gets a boost. For some reason.

The random conversations is what lead to a romance if you want it.

I don't know. My charsima is only a two and have 2 perks in lady killer. It should since you have the flirt option without it and all lady killer/ black widow is slightly increase your chances.

They react on alot of things. Piper will react negatively to you lockpicking for stealing, and then stealing. But if the lockpicking is done to uncover the truth and do something good she will actually react differently. It is a nice little touch. Sometimes they react to dialogue, and comment on quests you do. If you piss them off to much they leave you, so be careful. Helping the faction greatly helps aswell, atleast with Preston Garvey and another companion i won't spoil. And then you have the freelancer companions that really are abit more selfish and just want caps and mayhem. Not that experienced yet, though i did reach bestfriend with Piper last night.

Got the option without it. Cha of 5.

Save scummed a lot.

Black Widow/Lady Killer probably helps a lot without having to rely on force of Charisma alone.

Lady Killer or Black Widows gives you a greater chance to persuade the opposite six. So if you have 2 charisma and that perk, then you can still chat up guys if you're a woman and the other way around. Helps to smooth out the process of not having high Charisma. It is 3 perk points all together though, so 3 levels, well worth it in my opinion.

Valentine doesn't care about the drugs. I get the best reactions from him when dealing the with RR fairly. The only time he was disappointed was when I had dealings with the BoS. Something told me not to bring him along to a meet-n-greet with them. ;)

So I think there are options here for RP and different play-throughs. The companions seem to react directly to your actions. If you doing something you think you should'nt bring Dogmeat. He's always happy no mater what.

I am wondering though, what happens if your companion hates you? Do they attack?

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like I'm going to have to continue going it alone until I find a companion that suits my fancy, both in my stealth play style and one who doesn't mind my lack of morals.

As I understand it you can romance all options at the same time. Dunno if there is a crisrs point, but I saw a video that said that there weren't.

I would assume that Cait wouldn't have a problem with you using drugs. Don't know for sure though. I do know she likes seeing you use the lock-pick.

as far as i know, only dogmeat will be useful to you, it seems pretty much all the companions have morals and are good people.
