[RELz] Companion Vilja ver 3 - thread no 10

I'm having an issue with swimming. I try to go swimming from time to time, mainly for roleplaying (gotta wash up every now and then ;) ) but noticed when Vilja is with me and she swims, her entire body disappears and only her head is left. Any ideas?

Could it be the overlapping transparencies issue? If you're looking through transparent water, then items with their own transparency can disappear completely.

I think I heard of this before. I think it was after an update and selecting her swimsuit again (in her options menu, after clicking on the book after asking her about her skills) solved the issue.

I have downloaded Redrose manor and told Vilja to live there, however now she is talking about inviting her parents, that sounds
omnius, does these people exist? I really like to watch her work in the backyard though, what can I say I like to watch women
doing manual labour.

It's not even a script, it's a simple common AI-package. Could it be a corrupt save causing this maybe?


Solved, it turned out that cleaning 1em_Vilja.esp from its 11 ITM records caused the game to crash. The same applies to both 3.0.1 and 3.0.2 patches. I take it those are NOT safe to clean then?

edit: scratch that, the problem just turned to be the other way around. Now the game crashes when I tell her to relax, hence removing her armor to wear her robe. It doesn't happen with no other esps enabled so it's definitely due to some mod interaction. I'm going to disable all other esps and painstakingly reactivate them one at a time and see how it goes.

edit2: no way, the game crashes anyway in a short while with only 1em_Vilja.esp enabled, so whatever is causing this issue has been inherited in this save.

edit3: resurrecting vilja thus resetting her inventory fixes the problem temporarily. Saving the resurrected vilja game, closing oblivion and reloading that save causes the game to crash anyway whenever I tell her to relax. I might try to deactivate everything but vilja, enable one esp at a time and wait till the problem arise but it would take me ages.

Has anyone even the slightest idea on what might be causing this?

edit4: ok, here's what I did:

- activated oblivion.esm + 1em_Vilja.esp ONLY
- loaded the last save with vilja in it
- coc'ed to the testing hall
- resurrected vilja
- did a save in a new slot, hence doing a clean save with 1em_Vilja.esp only
- closed the game
- launched the game, loaded the clean save
- resurrected vilja once again
- did a save in a new slot, hence doing another clean save, if possible cleaner than the previous save as this one was with a fresh new vilja in it
- closed the game
- launched the game, loaded the last clean save
- told her a few times to travel together with/without armor

After a few tries the game crashed.

The same applies to a fresh new game with only oblivion.esm + 1em_Vilja.esp enabled [and arthmoor's alternative beginnings to get quickly at the bloated float inn].

You guys might be able to reproduce the problem by recruiting vilja and quickly tell her a few times to follow you with and without armor, so she can wear/unwear her cuirass a few times in a row. It is my understanding that there's definitely something wrong either with the mod itself or with the AI package used by the mod. Either way, I'm stuck. Any help?

I played Vilya in her version 2 incarnation, and she was a fun, endearing companion. I didn't think you could improve on it - but I was obviously wrong :)

Vilja is not dependant on Shivering Isles, this in order to ensure that everyone can use her, also those that haven't got SI installed. The only way to add SI-relevant dialog without adding an extra dependancy would be to make a SI-add-on for her, just like I have made add-ons for two of my house-mods (Red Rose Manor and Aleswell Cottage). I have actually been thinking of doing this, but I feel I have so far not played SI enough to make a good add-on.

Oh, I think ver 3 actually included a whole lot of new improvements, especially the "Vilja-leads-the-way" feature seems to be much appreciated as it makes her appear more "real" and "independant". Hope you will enjoy the newest version :).

Heh, you don't have to worry about Vilja's folks showing up - they won't :D

I think what we ran into when testing was that in ver 2 the swimsuit was in the folder system and in ver 3 it was in the bsa :/.

I would also be interested to hear if re-selecting her swimsuit has helped you, lonewolf.

It is my understanding that there's definitely something wrong either with the mod itself or with the AI package used by the mod. Either way, I'm stuck. Any help?


I honestly don't know what to reply to you. I understand that you are having a serious problem, but I cannot reproduce it and I never heard these kind of reports before, not in 18 months and 137 000 downloads on Nexus only. I mean, of course there can be corrupted saves causing issues, and of course there can be mod conflicts. But you say that it happens with a fresh game without other mods, and that I don't understand... It's not realistic that no-one else has discovered such a serious issue with an ai-package or with the mod itself, so it must be something else which is "unique" for your game. Are you using a custom version of her, are you using a custom race for your character? Have you tried to uncheck the Vilja-mod and see if that helps? (Just in case it's actually not a problem with her)

I'm not using neither a custom race or a custom vilja version. This is driving me crazy. I'm going to do a fresh new oblivion install with vilja only and see what happens.

Ok, here's what I did so far:

- renamed both C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\oblivion> and C:\Users\dAb\Documents\My Games\Oblivion to something else
- deleted the local oblivion content from the steam library [it actually did nothing else that cleaning a registry key and a steam library entry, as no oblivion folders were found]
- reinstalled a fresh new oblivion copy from steam by restoring my oblivion steam backup
- manually installed both the Vilja mod and Arthmoor's alternative beginnings, plus obse v0020, which is needed by AB
- ran oblivion, started a new game, met Vilja and told her to equip/unequip her armor about a hundred times in a row, did a few dungeon, repaired her armor, again told her to wear/unwear her armor - NO CRASH!
- again renamed both C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\oblivion> and C:\Users\dAb\Documents\My Games\Oblivion to something else
- renamed the original oblivion folders back to their original names
- uninstalled ALL mod packages but Vilja in BAIN, unchecked every esp but 1em_Vilja.esp
- ran Oblivion - crashed as expected in a short while after the launcher, as it was relying on the DarnUI fonts - renamed oblivion.ini to something else - ran Oblivion with a fresh new oblivion.ini
- closed Oblivion, reenabled BSA redirection in BAIN to update the new oblivion.ini, just in case
- ran oblivion and loaded a save from my original setup
- told Vilja to equip/unequip her armor about a hundred times in a row, again did a few dungeon, again repaired her armor, again told her to wear/unwear her armor - NO CRASH!

This looks promising. I'm going to reinstall one mod package at a time and see what happens. Have I ever told you that I'm stubborn as hell?

edit: had no luck with this. After carefully installing one package at a time, loading the game and telling Vilja to wear/unwear her armor a bunch of times, the game never crashed. Previous saves never crashed either. I've been reinstalling every package I had before without changing anything at all other than having now a fresh new oblivion.ini, further modified by the wrye bash tweaks I need for DarnUI. I'm going to compare this one with the oblivion.ini I had before with winmerge and see if there's anything obviously different.

Oh, I think ver 3 actually included a whole lot of new improvements, especially the "Vilja-leads-the-way" feature seems to be much appreciated as it makes her appear more "real" and "independant". Hope you will enjoy the newest version :).

Don't even THINK to enable that tweak with Vilja. Seriously, don't do it. I used to have it enabled to fix the horrible npc self shadowing [bActorSelfShadowing]. Over time it will eventually screw her up so badly she will crash your game while wearing/unwearing her armor. Don't ask me why, I don't have the slightest idea on how the two might be related, I'm just glad I have no troubles anymore. I am able to easily reproduce the problem by toggling the face normals fix on and off and loading an early Vilja save, so I have absolutely no doubt it is bFixFaceNormals fault. All of my Vilja saves are now working with no problem at all.

That's interesting information. Thank you for telling us, now I will have a clue when/if someone else reports the same kind of problems as you. I'm not sure how widely this tweak is used, probably not so often as I haven't come across this problem before. for now, I make a note of it in the thread for Vilja in my forum, where I can check it up if I read about the same problem again.

I hope you will now have a problem-free life in Cyrodiil together with Vilja :). I'm so glad you sorted it out!

@dAb, I have googled on this and found another report of game crashing with this active and a tweak guide suggesting this change alongside bActorSelfShadowing=1 (which can be also changed ingame) and iShadowFilter=10 (being 10 a high value and the suggestion being to try different numbers here). Did you changed also those variables in your ini?

I have actually changed both bFixFaceNormals and bActorSelfShadowing to 1, but I didn't touch iShadowFilter in any way. Note, however, that bFixFaceNormals alone is enough to crash the game after a while. Apparently the armor meshes got corrupted overtime [this involves the cuirass ALONE], as resurrecting Vilja temporarily fixes the problem, which arise again after a short wile. Set your bFixFaceNormals to 1, load that save, tell her to wear and unwear her armor [you might have to do that a few times] and the game will crash.

I have actually changed both bFixFaceNormals and bActorSelfShadowing to 1, but I didn't touch iShadowFilter in any way. Note, however, that bFixFaceNormals alone is enough to crash the game after a while. Apparently the armor meshes got corrupted overtime [this involves the cuirass ALONE], as resurrecting Vilja temporarily fixes the problem, which arise again after a short wile. Repairing her armor was clearly misleading me in finding what was the real issue, neither it was a script problem. Here's my [working] oblivion.ini:

If you wish to take a look, click http://www.2shared.com/file/R0OSWW2l/CrashingVilja.html to download a clean save with Vilja only where the problem is evident. Set your bFixFaceNormals to 1, load that save, tell her to wear and unwear her armor [you might have to do that a few times] and the game will crash.

I wasn't suggesting that you could have touched too many variables, my though here was that maybe tweaking with the three of them the result could be more stable. Not very plausible but who knows. Anyway, as any potentially game corrupting change, testing different settings is really difficult and you can never be sure of reaching a stable one.

I had tried your save with bFixFaceNormals to 1 and self shadowing both active and inactive without any crash or weOCPS warning after a lot of asking her to change from and to armored. The worst thing about save corruption is that you can't rely on it even for ruining your game when you want it :P . I suppose the crashes would start after various saves and hours playing the game, the game not crashing immediately or after a few tries in my end has surely much to do with I using different resources than yours for vanilla armors.

Her skills increased when she level up, which happens when you level up. What may be confusing you is that when she is supposed to use ranged attacks her melee skills are downgraded to 20 and when she uses melee the oposite happens (this is to ensure that she uses the weapon she must use).

Ummm....I'm not sure you asked for anything...heh. In any case I rather like her current 'attack only when attacked' mode as is. Are you maybe asking for a separate (additional) combat mode where she ignores combat unless an enemy directly accosts her?

CDCooley once explained this quite thoroughly but I cant put my finger on it so pardon the following rough explanation ...

When you bring out a weapon Vilja becomes more alert to threats around you, keep your weapon out and Vilja will calm down becoming less likely to attack potential threats (I forget exactly why but there is good reason for this behaviour).

Put your weapon away, and just before you get attacked draw it, Vilja should now leap into action and aid you :)
