COMPANION VILJA VER 3.0
- by Emma and CDCooley

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Technically, Vilja is just a companion. But that is sort of like saying a phoenix spouting fire and swooping down on a battlefield is just a bird. What separates Vilja from any other companion I have ever played - mod or part of an original RPG - is her fully-developed personality."

NOW UPGRADED TO VER 3.0!
========================

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=28977

http://lovkullen.net/Emma/Vilja.htm

Quite a lot has happened since ver 1 of Companion Vilja was released in december 2009. She has grown really fast!

Now ver 3 is here, with several new features.

Before I start out on a description of the new version, I wish to express my sincere gratitude to a Great Grandmaster in storytelling, Discworld author Terry Pratchett. He has been travelling Cyrodiil with Vilja in tow since the first version of her was released, and he has not only been so kind and brain-stormed over her with me, but has also written more than 100 of the new pvssyr- and Thieves Guild-entries in ver 3 especially for Vilja. Several of her new features and topics originates from his thoughts on her. Many, many thanks!

What's new?
Some screenshots to illustrate the latest news:

http://lovkullen.net/Emma/OB/ScreenShot872.JPG Yes, you can actually be her companion. She might suggest it, or you can suggest that she takes the lead. She might show you places you've never seen before!
http://lovkullen.net/Emma/OB/ScreenShot883.JPG instead of having a companion always five steps behind you.

More new features in ver 3:

- Vilja the spellcaster - as a reward for the new little quests included (which should start automatically a few days after you finished the previous one, which was added with ver 2) Vilja will be able to learn how to use a few simple spells. No ranged destruction casting, of course, as you would probably be her first victim. But, she can among other things learn how to paralyze her enemies and how to protect herself better. Once she has learnt her first two spells, she will be able to learn more in a pace you decide and in whatever order you prefer. And, no need to worry, you can finetune in the dialog exactly which spells you want her to use and which ones she should keep deactivated.

- Vilja the pathfinder - as a bonus to the "Vilja leads the way"-feature described above, she can also lead you out of dungeons and show you the way to various places - guilds, shops, etc.

- Show her your favorite places - she will remember them and will be able to teleport or travel to them at any time.

- Combat instructions - you can now give her new fighting instructions during combat, either by talking to her directly or by casting her summon spell.

- Vampirism - previously, Vilja has been completely ignorant of whether or not your character is a vampire. Now, she will know if that is the case and randomly comment on it. (She's still afraid of other vampires, though).

- Inbuilt reset- and upgrading system. Vilja's start combat-spell can be used to reset Vilja if something unexpectedly should go wrong. It can also be used to upgrade her storyline if you for unknown reasons should want to uninstall/reinstall the mod.

- Further expanded interaction with other companions. Vilja is aware of your other companions (after an introduction by you), with some of them she will interact on an individual basis and also comment on them in her dialog with you. These are currently: Neeshka, Rhianna, Arren, Stoker Wolf, Saerileth, Viconia, Sonia, Valeria, Vincente, Ramy, CM Partner Valtierro and Eyja (works with both the Eyja mod and the original Eyja). But she will also recognize other companions and CM Partners as fellow companions. If you want to relax at the computer for a while, just leave Vilja and your other companions in wandermode, and I'm sure there will happen things you hadn't expected. In ver 3, she also have several unique subjects she might - or might not - want to discuss with them.

- There are also a number of new "roleplay-features" included. For instance, once her first questline is completed, you can invite her to an evening out or arrange a cozy supper at home. You can thank her if she has been of great help, you can tell her when you give her something precious. She will also occasionally ask for your opinion on more serious and indepth matters, where you can pick choices according to your characters personality (or, of course, the choice you hope will please her).

- Dialog manual included. As Vilja's dialog is evolving over time and includes quite a few topics, we have included a "manual" in the zip-file. There is also a manual with important notes on gameplay included, please read it!!

- The most extensive work is not 'visible', though... The whole dialog system has been restructured and should hopefully lead to that she now is better at saying the right things at the right times. Of course a lot of new dialog has been added, both general pvssyr and questpvssyr related to Thieves Guild and miscellaneous quests: Vilja's voice-set for female nords currently includes approx 3.900 mp3-files. The whole Oblivion voice-set for female nords and orcs consists of 2.434 mp3-files, so Vilja alone has almost twice as much to say to you as all other nord and orc females in Oblivion have alltogether!

COMPANION VILJA VER 3
=====================

Character, story and voice by Emma
Scripts by CDCooley
Featuring Zrenk Dungeon by Blockhead

Vilja means willpower
=====================

Vilja in Swedish means willpower, guts, determination. And that is something Vilja has got lots of!

When her sister was put in prison on bread and water for selling beauty crème with unexpected effects to the Vvardenfell nobility, Vilja instantly decided to help her. But things hasn't turned out the way Vilja expected...
She is now waiting for a friend of her sister in The Bloated Float at the Waterfront in the imperial city. But, the days are passing, and the friend hasn't shown up. Meanwhile, her sister is suffering in prison.

Will you help Vilja? Will you let her come along with you in her search for ingredients for an antidote potion that might make it possible for her sister to help those unfortunate that used the beauty crème?

Vilja is a young nord girl, born in Solstheim and living in Cyrodiil since... well, that she will explain to you, herself, when she knows you
better!

She isn't the best fighter in the world (why would she then need your help?), nor the best marksman, and when it comes to spells, she has in the beginning only learnt waterwalking, teleporting and some healing ones.

But she will certainly change your lonely life in Cyrodiil, as she is talkative, curious and very unpredictable.

This how Vilja's story started in ver 1. Since then she has grown considerably and should now surprise you with new questlines and new and expanding features for many, many game-hours to come.

Background
==========

General (ver 1-2):

Although I - Emma - have made several companion mods for Morrowind, Vilja is my first companion mod for Oblivion. When I had played through the game for the second time in spring 2009, I started to feel lonely and looked around for companions similar to my Morrowind ones. After a lot of research, I found my favourite - Companion Neeshka by Rsdnt_Evle. After using her for a while, I couldn't resist starting out on my own companion. At first she was just a clone of Neeshka (which is why also Vilja will be found in the Bloated Float in Waterfront) but as time passed, Vilja took her own path and Neeshka would today probably disagreeingly shake her head if I insisted that Vilja was a 'distant relative' of hers...

Vilja is in many ways similar to my Morrowind companions - she has her own story, her own personality, her own missions, and lots and lots of dialog. Vilja is also very much aware of what is going on around her. She will comment on your ongoing quests and actions, and sometimes your decisions will please her... or make her really angry. Read more below.

The most important difference between ver 1 and the newer versions is that since ver 2 we are now two people working together on Vilja. CDCooley, who I have previously worked together with on Morrowind projects, had fallen for Vilja's charms and offered to work on her scripts. This has meant a huge leap forward when it comes to functionality and general AI. All her original scripts are thoroughly reworked. The small, but annoying, glitches from version 1 are since long gone, and since ver 2, Vilja is not only a hopefully nice company but also a well functioning companion that can be an asset rather than a burden in combat and other situations. On top of this, we have introduced interaction between companion mods - something that since long is standard for Morrowind companions.

What more to expect - brief overview of the features available already in previous versions:
===========================================================================================

The news in ver 3 has been described above. This is a brief overview of the features already present in ver 2.

- There are now totally four quest-lines connected to Vilja, which will keep you busy for many hours. However, don't expect long, involved storylines with new landmasses! Instead, the story-lines are relatively short, simple and there to give you a background and a reason why Vilja will want to team up with you and continue to be your side-kick.

- Vilja has her own life story, her own goals, her own wishes and needs. If you talk to her, you will learn more and more about her over time. Treat her well and your friendship will grow stronger and stronger. She is not a romance companion, but she does offer affection, loyalty and friendship.

- Tired of companions that promise to stay out of trouble and then still charge as soon as you see an enemy? Well, Vilja shouldn't... If told to stay out of combat, she will indeed do so... until you are so badly injured that you desperately need her help to survive. The behaviour with all enemies attacking your companion is also gone - if she is set to defensive fighting or no fighting, it is more likely that you are their main target, which makes it much easier to level up. I.e. it is no longer a problem to have Vilja in tow from level 1 - you will still be able to level up your fighting and armor skills. And if you want to sneak your way through dungeons, she will do so, too... unless, of course, you have told her to attack anything hostile. (Note that this might not always work with enemies added by other mods!)

- Vilja comes with an Options-book where you can set various features on the spot, like for instance: which swimsuit you want her to wear (you have 20 to choose between), health bonuses, pvssyr-frequency, essential versus non-essential, can get encumbered versus never gets encumbered. You'll find her Options-book in her skillreport-menu.

- Vilja's level is set to 3 levels below yours. This means that if you start out with her when you are at level 1, it will take a while before she reaches higher levels (should happen when you are level 4).

- You will get a Vilja SUMMON SPELL that will bring her to you, should she ever vanish. In ver 3, this spell can also be used to give her new instructions during combat. Vilja's START COMBAT SPELL can be used to help her pick enemy. In ver 3, it can also be used to reset her if you run into unexpected problems.

- Vilja has her own horse, and when you mount your horse, she will summon hers and go riding with you. She can also use her horse when you are walking, or walk while you are riding.

- She is very talkative, but you can tell her to shut up if you don't want to listen to her.

- You can't bribe her or play the speechcraft game with her. But you will find other ways to improve her disposition towards you. (Do you like strawberries? Well, hope you are not too fond of them, as Vilja will want them all).

- You can tell her to eat, drink, take a nap, go swimming, go home, meet you in various cities. She will recognize your home as her home as well, once you have told her that this is where you will live.

- apart from her regular inventory, she has a special pyjamas-bag (where you can choose what she should wear... well, or not wear, obviously... when she sleeps) and two extra storage bags for items you want her to carry without using.

- New scripting takes care of the well-known Oblivion issue with companions 'vanishing' from Oblivion planes and then showing up again in the same state and with the same equipment as when you first started the mod.

- Vilja will comment frequently on the original Oblivion quests that you are doing together, and your actions might please or displease her. And don't be surprised if she also comments on other things in the gameworld. "Oh look! A butterfly! Isn't it beautiful?"

- Vilja will also know about other things. For instance, she will know if she is nvde or if your character is nvde, she will know if your character is ill, or if your character is a vampire (new in ver 3), she will know if she is swimming (and put on a swimming suit), she will know what kind of dungeon you are in and what kind of enemies you are facing. Of course she'll also remember if you have promised her to take her out for the evening or if you are planning an cozy evening at home.

- She can make some simple potions for you if you give her an ingredient. She can collect ingredients for you. She can later on heal you if you ask her to. When you are at home, she might surprise you with one of her pies. You can send her to do some shopping for you, but it's quite hazardous as she might not have the same idea as you on what is a bargain. If you run out of lockpicks, you can buy some from her, and she can help you with a hammer if necessary. Oh, she can light a torch, too. And rake your garden. Give her cloth, and she will make you a new outfit - but don't expect anything fancy, just ordinary Oblivion clothes. The 'service' isn't there to be a cheat, only add to the immersion.

- If you leave her in wandermode, you can watch her perform her daily schedule, and when she is making potions, she will literally be making potions, provided that you have given her some of the simple ingredients that she can use (she never claimed to be an excellent alchemist, so don't expect anything too fancy)

- On top of that, she offers heaps of advice and suggestions on what to do - but her ideas might not always match yours.

- Vilja has her own friends in Cyrodiil. Don't be surprised if she decides to go and have a chat with one of them! Those who know her will also have an extra "Vilja-topic" where they will comment on her (those who have played my Morrowind companions will recognize this).

- As some of you might want to change Vilja's looks, we are providing a Customization pack - see below - which will help you to create your own, unique Vilja, or choose between a number of premade looks for her.

- As I have voice-acted Vilja, myself (where else would I find a lunatic that would voice-record and lip-sync close to 4000 voice-entries?), she is speaking english with a strong scandinavian accent (I'm from Sweden) and she is probably making quite a few mistakes, especially when it comes to pronunciation. Please let me know of unacceptable mistakes that should be attended to in later versions (her english won't be flawless no matter what, as my english isn't flawless).

Known issues
============

- Vilja is very talkative and will chat with you wherever you go. However, the lipsync in Oblivion only works when you are facing the talking npc. This means that sometimes, her lip-movement will appear once you turn around and look at her, i.e. she will then appear to be talking but you won't be able to hear anything.

- Vilja can fight both melee and ranged, but like every companion in Oblivion, she sometimes "forgets" to load her bow with arrows! (If you are already using companions in Oblivion, you are probably familiar with this problem). We haven't found any way to 'fix' this, but she will start using arrows again after you have switched cells. An improvement with ver 3 is that she is also likely to start using arrows again if you use her summon spell to tell her first to switch to melee fighting and then back to ranged fighting.

- If you are wearing the Mythic Dawn robe or the zero-value armor provided by the Alternate start by ship-mod, Vilja will consider you as 'nvde'. This is because these items have 0 value. The 'cure' is to put on a ring, an amulet or shoes that have a value of at least 1 Gold.

- Like any other companion, Vilja will only sleep in beds that have no owner assigned to them, and she might not sit in chairs that aren't marked as "persistent". If you tell her to take a nap and she refuses, it's not her fault - there simply isn't a suitable bed at the location. She will then revert to her daily schedule and do what she would normally have done at that hour of the day.

- Some modder-made houses are companion-friendly, others aren't. If there are no pathgrids, no persistent chairs and no beds without ownership, companions won't behave very well. Thank you Korana for explaining all the important things regarding this, and for always making your houses companion-friendly. A list of companion-friendly house can be found http://emmates.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=oblivion&action=display&thread=181

Compatibility
=============

Vilja should work very well together with other mods. However, an old mod called Cheydinhal Petshop affects a global that will prevent Vilja's daycounters from working (this is not unique for Vilja - the Petshop has the same effect on all mods with daycounters).
In order to ensure that she won't conflict with landscape overhauls etc we have avoided adding anything to the exterior game world.
If you use mods like for instance persuasion overhaul you might find that npcs from the Vilja-mod will have additional topics where they will use the game-original voices. It's not a conflict, but it sounds a bit annoying. There isn't much we can do about this, although immersion-breaking it won't cause any real problem.

Vilja and CSR
=============

Vilja is fully compatible with Companion Share and Recruit (CSR). However, if you are running the optional CSR addon for faction recruitment, there is a partial incompatibility with Vilja and other companions that are members by any factions (by choosing the wrong dialog topipc when talking to Vilja, you are at risk to turn her into a common henchman). This issue is thankfully sorted out by Amgepo's mod DRC available http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=32473

Vilja and FCOM-OOO-MMM:
=======================

FCOM-OOO-MMM-patch:
Vilja doesn't have the ability to 'recognize' all of the factions that npcs and creatures from FCOM, OOO and MMM belong in. CorePc from the FCOM-team has made a patch to attend to this. The current (ALFA-BETA) version is available http://www.4shared.com/file/VuO-FTZs/1em_Vilja_FCOM_Fix.html

Vilja and Sensual Walks
=======================

A patch has been made so that Vilja will adapt the sensual female walk when you use the Sensual Walks for Female NPCs mod by Surazal and Mur_Zik available http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=28223

Companionfriendly Inns
======================

As I am sure many companion-users have noted, companions will not sleep in inns. This is because of how ownership is assigned to the beds. However, I have now released a mod called http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=33475 where temporary extra-beds are enabled in rented rooms - beds where your companion can sleep.

THE CUSTOMIZATION PACK
======================

As so many players have wondered how to change Vilja's race and looks, CDCooley has made a Vilja customization pack for easier upgrades of customized version. In the customization pack, you'll also find simple instructions on how to customize your own Vilja.
YOU'LL FIND THE CUSTOMIZATION PACK AMONG THE OPTIONAL FILES FOR VILJA.
Note that you need both the Vilja 3.0 package and the latest version of Vilja in order to make this work!
Plese understand that the changes are just cosmetic - Vilja will still have the same dialog and will always consider herself a blond nord girl from Solstheim.
Many thanks to Xtudo, Nivea, Gonzoguns and 4VGN for providing alternate looks for Vilja!

2 - Background

General (ver 1-2):

On top of this, we have introduced interaction between companion mods - something that since long is standard for Morrowind companions.

----------------------

3 - New in Vilja ver 3

----------------------

With version 3, Vilja is taking another leap forward, with new features and of course more quests to do.

- Now YOU can go adventuring with HER.
Yes, you can actually be her companion. She might suggest it, or you can suggest that she takes the lead. She might show you places you've never seen before!
It's a very different and rewarding roleplay-experience to travel side by side instead of having a companion always five steps behind you.

I.e. it is no longer a problem to have Vilja in tow from level 1 - you will still be able to level up your fighting and armor skills.

Vilja's START COMBAT SPELL can be used to help her
pick enemy.

------------------
5 - Known issues:

------------------

A list of companion-friendly houses can be found here: http://emmates.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=oblivion&action=display&thread=181

-------------------

6 - Compatibility

-------------------

This issue is thankfully sorted out by Amgepo's mod DRC available here: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=32473

Vilja and FCOM-OOO-MMM:

FCOM-OOO-MMM-patch:
Vilja doesn't have the ability to 'recognize' all of the factions that npcs and creatures from FCOM, OOO and MMM belong in. CorePc from the FCOM-team has made a patch to attend to this. The current (ALFA-BETA) version is available here. http://www.4shared.com/file/VuO-FTZs/1em_Vilja_FCOM_Fix.html

Vilja and Sensual Walks

A patch has been made so that Vilja will adapt the sensual female walk when you use the Sensual Walks for Female NPCs mod by Surazal and Mur_Zik available here. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=28223

7 - INSTALLATION AND UPGRADING

-------------------------------

Installation:

ALWAYS MAKE A SAFETY COPY OF YOUR SAVED GAME BEFORE ADDING OR UPGRADING ANY
MOD, THIS ONE INCLUDED!!!!

Just drop the content into your Oblivion-data-library.

Upgrading:

From what we have seen, upgrading from ver 1 or 2 of Vilja should be easy:

Put Vilja in an interior cell, leave the cell and save your game. DO NOT USE
QUICK-SAVE!

Leave the game. Replace the old esp with the new one (keep a backup of the
old esp in case something should go wrong and you need to re-do the
upgrading)

Ingame, return to Vilja and ask her to join you again. Important! You must
give her new combat instructions! Else, it won't work properly.

This should be enough... you are ready to continue your adventures in
Vilja's company. However, there is no way to grant that this easy-upgrade
will work in your game. Should you find that the 'new' Vilja acts odd in any
way. Try this: Put her in an interior cell and leave her behind for +72 game
hours (i.e. you can just go somewhere else and rest for +72 game hours).
Return to her, and hopefully she should behave well again.

If nothing helps, and you are not happy with how your 'new' Vilja behaves,
use this recommendation from TESPOSitive on how to update saves:
http://sites.google.com/site/oblivionpoinfo/runoblivion/updatesaves
Once you have reinstalled her, follow the instructions below to upgrade her to
the stage where you were befor the uninstalling.

on improving and finetuning a warping system for Morrowind companions, and
The Other Felix, who has optimized and improved almost every aspect of
Morrowind companion behaviour.

9 - FURTHER USAGE AND UPLOADING

------------------------------------------------------------------

- Vilja in her current state is to be considered as a WIP - I/we will most
likely continue to tinker on her and add to her. Therefore, it would be very
unfortunate if she was included in some kind of compilation, or if this
version was uploaded at various locations without our knowledge. Please do
not do this!

- I have been voice-acting Vilja, myself, and as I am not too proud of my
scandinavian accent, I wouldn't wish to find my voice re-used in other mods.
I ask you kindly to understand and accept this.

- As the mod is so dialog-heavy, it probably wouldn't work very well as a
template. If you still want to re-use parts of scripting and AI-packages, feel free
to go ahead and do so, but please make sure that everything is properly
renamed and have new form IDs in order to avoid conflicts. The scripts are by CdCooley, if you
have questions regarding them, please contact him.

- The main home of this mod is on my
web-site,http://lovkullen.net/Emma/index.htm.
It is also available on TESNexus http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=28977
If you have received this mod from any other source it may not be the latest version.

- Should something happen so that the mod is no longer available on the net,
please try and contact me or CdCooley. In case you have been unable to reach
us for more than one month, please feel free to upload this mod IN ITS
CURRENT STATE to one of the public Elder Scrolls download sites. Please send
an e-mail or PM to notify on this!

- Please do not upload any altered versions of this mod anywhere without our
knowledge and agreement!

IMPORTANT NOTES ON GAMEPLAY

-------------------------------------------

A. Vilja's new combat system.
-----------------------------

Vilja has three combat settings:

1. Only attack enemies that attack us. This is her default setting! With
this setting, she will not engage in combat until a) enemies attack and you
raise your weapon OR B) she is directly attacked by an enemy OR c) you have
taken a few hits from an enemy (i.e. you have started to take damage). This
means that you can gladly run past wild animals and sneak past enemies
without having to fear that she will charge ahead and ruin your plans.
However, if you are injured after a battle and don't heal yourself before
continuing, she will get protective and rush in to defend you against any
potential threat. So, if you want her to obey your orders on a long term
basis, don't run around injured.
If you like to play stealthy, this setting should be excellent. She will
never attack enemies that haven't spotted you, and I have been sneaking my
way through whole dungeons, without Vilja acting up at all.
If you play as a mage and choose not to carry a weapon that you can raise,
this might not be the optimal setting if you want her to be your tank while
you attack with spells from a distance. The best solution to make her respond
quickly is that you carry some kind of weapon and raise it as an
'attack-sign' for Vilja to follow (actually, just raising your fist, using the F-key
should be enough.

2. Attack any enemy upon sight. I don't think this one needs any further
explanation :P. What you get is traditional Oblivion companion behaviour and
a Vilja that is happy to bash everything from rats to daedras.

3. Let's avoid fighting. With this setting Vilja will not fight, and enemies
are very unlikely to attack her. There are two things that will make her
disobey your orders: a) if she still is directly attacked by an enemy, then
she will defend herself OR B) your health is so low that she fears you will
die very soon. Then she will rush in to rescue you - after all, she is your
loyal friend, and as such she couldn't just stand there and watch you dying,
could she? As with setting no 1, she will continue to disobey your orders if
you refuse to heal yourself. And realistically, why would anyone follow
orders from someone who hasn't got enough sense to take a healing potion
instead of running around half dead?
Oh, there is one more thing that will make her disobey you! If someone
attacks her horse Bruse, she will rush in to defend him. Don't blame her for
that. It's her horse and she loves him dearly.

You will note that the original Oblivion enemies respond differently to
Vilja than to other companions. Whereas most enemies by default attack
companions rather than you (which is a nuisance when you want to level up
your combat and armor skills), they will in most cases rather attack you
than Vilja. *This may not be valid for enemies added by mods, though.*

New in ver. 3:

You can interact with Vilja during combat and give her new instructions,
either by initiating dialog with her or by casting the Vilja summon spell, which
will bring up a menu with various options (switch ranged/melee, stop fighting,
heal me etc).
Giving her orders by casting the summon spell might also help you to overcome the
persistant Oblivion bug that makes npcs in general and companions in particular
forget to use arrows when firing a bow. If you tell her to switch to melee and then
back to ranged fighting, this will in most, but not all, cases make her use arrows again.

B. Vilja and other companions.
------------------------------

With Vilja ver 2 we introduced new system for companions from
different mods to interact with each other. You can introduce Vilja to any
of your followers and she will know that this is a fellow companions. With a
number of unique companions, she also has unique interaction. She will
recognize them by name, discuss with them as individuals when in wander mode
conversations, and sometimes smalltalk with you about them.
These companions are so far: Neeshka, Rhianna, Arren, Stoker Wolf, Viconia,
Saerileth, Sonia, Valeria, Vincente, Ramy, CM Partner Valtierro and Eyja (works with both the Eyja mod and the
original Eyja.

However, Vilja won't recognize a companion until you have properly
introduced them!
In Viljas main topic "Let's just talk for a while", you will find a
sub-topic called "About my other companion". Choose this topic, and then
choose which companion you want to introduce her to. She will then prompt
you to introduce her to the other companion as well (i.e. you have to talk
to the companions). After this, the introduction is finished and Vilja will
'know' your mutual friend.
If you make any mistake when introducing a companion, the
introduction can be undone in the same topic. Tell Vilja that you made a
mistake, and then tell the other npc.
Vilja will know if a companion has died. But if you have removed a companion
mod from your game, you have to do something manually. Go to Vilja's
option-book (you'll find it in her skillreport menu) and mark which
companion should not be around any more.

Note that there exist some companions whose dialog are set up in a way that
effectively prevents them from interacting with other mods. Most notable is the
popular Ruined Tail character. I wanted to add interactivity with him, but
this has turned out to be impossible.

C. Vilja's option book.
------------------------

With Vilja ver 2, we introduced the Options book - a book where you
can toggle various features for Vilja in-game. For instance if she should be
set to essential or non-essential, her health bonus, if she should sell lockpicks, if she
should provide you with armor hammers, if she should get encumbered like the
player or not, which swimsuit you want her to wear. Here you can also delete
companions that have been removed from your game, so that Vilja won't talk
about companions that aren't around anymore.

Her default settings are non-essential, sells lockpicks, provides armor
hammer, will get encumbered.

You'll find her Options book in her Skill report menu - click on it and pick
your choices.

D. Extra storages
-----------------

Apart from her main inventory, Vilja now has a Pyjamas bag and a Blue and a
Red storage bag INSIDE her inventory. She will wear anything you put in the
pyjamas bag when she sleeps. The items in the Blue and Red storage bags she
will never wear or use - these storages are for items you just want her to
carry for you.

E. Evolving topics - dialog manual
----------------------------------

Over time Vilja has grown so complex and her dialog has evolved so far that it might
be helpful for you to have access to a manual regarding her topics-structure, especially
as some topics will be evolving over time. A manual over all her topics has been
included in the zip-file and we suggest you have a look at it.

F. Vilja leading
----------------

In ver 3 Vilja can, if you wish, at any point take over and lead the way.
This new feature makes quite a huge difference from a roleplay-perspective once
one gets used to it and and accommodates travelling beside her instead of having her
trailing behind. She can lead the way to cities, shops, her favorite places, your
favorite places (which you show her ingame), dungeons, nice spots, your home.
She won't get lost, but there are places, especially in the northern area with all
the mountains, where she might have difficulties finding good pathgrids to follow.

G. Upgrading from ver 1 or 2
----------------------------

H. In cases of emergency...
---------------------------

We have made our best to make Vilja function as flawless as possible. However,
it is a mod in a gameworld where many of you are using hundreds of mods together.
And realistically, there must be situations we haven't foreseen that you might run into.

Therefore, we have built in "emergency-solutions for you". These are included in
Vilja's Start Combat spell (which you normally use to help her pick a combat-target).

If you cast the Start Combat spell on *Vilja* you will get a new menu, where you can
reset her temporary variables and animation. It should sort out most kind of issues with her.

If you for some reason still decide that you have to uninstall and reinstall the mod,
the Start Combat spell will help you to upgrade Vilja's storyline to approximately where you
were before you uninstalled. In this case, you'll have to cast the combat spell not on Vilja but
on the dunmer witch Heneri in Cheydinhal (you'll find her either in the Cheydinhal Bridge Inn
or strolling in the towncentre).

VILJA VERSION 3 - DIALOG MANUAL

-------------------------------------------

Over time Vilja has grown so complex and her dialog has evolved so far that it might
be helpful for you to have access to a manual regarding her topics-structure.

1. TRAVEL TOGETHER
==================
Sub-topics:

a) Let's go - and equip your armor (only available if she is currently not wearing armor)

B) Let's go - you won't need any armor (only available if she is currently wearing armor or pyjamas)

c) Lead the way
- This topic will give you multiple options depending on the current situation.
Vilja can lead you out of dungeons, she can lead you to other cities, to her
favorite places, home, to random dungeons or places of interest. If you are
in a city she can also lead the way to local shops etc. And if you tell her which
are your favorite places (see "About this place", she will remember them
and lead you there as well.
This topic is new in ver 3, and I personally find it excellent for roleplay;
it's a very different experience to be able to travel side by side with your
companion instead of having her trailing along behind you.

d) About this place.
- Here you will find several topics related to your current location:
- Remember this place if we get lost
Vilja will "mark" the location and if you later tell her that you
are lost (see "Lead the way") she will bring you to this spot.
Very useful when dungeoncrawling.
- If we need to split up we meet here.
Vilja will "mark" the location and teleport here if later told to do so.
- This is our new home. (only in interiors)
Vilja will know this place is her home and refer to it as such.
- This is your bed. (only in interiors)
If you want her to sleep in another interior cell than her "home", you
can show her where and she will remember it as long as you are in
adjacent cells (i.e. she won't travel from Anvil to sleep in Bruma etc).
- Remove your bedroll, please. (only during the hours the bedroll is visible)
If Vilja has previously placed a bedroll in an interior, this will make
her remove it. The topic is only available during the hours in evening
and night when the bedroll is visible (it's disabled during daytime)
- Your horse can stable here.
Will move Bruse's home-marker to this spot. Only available when either of
you are riding.
- This is a nice place to wander.
Only available in exteriors.
Vilja will remember this place, and if she is in her home and in
wander-mode she will automatically go here in the afternoons if it is
not raining. (If she is staying at home and has no place to wander outdoors,
she will be nagging you regarding this).
- This is my favorite place 1/2/3
If you tell Vilja about your favorite places, she will remember them and be
able to lead you to them (topic "Lead the way") and to show them to you
on your map of Cyrodiil.

e) We need to separate for a while.
- Guard this spot please (she will stand guard)
- Wait here, no armor needed (she will wander and do her AI-packages)
- I need to be alone, stay at home. (she'll teleport home, or if you are at home,
she'll go into wander-mode).
- Teleport to our meeting point (see "About this place")
- Meet me in Anvil/Bravil/etc. (She will teleport to the city of your choice or to
one of your "Favorite places" - for favorite places, see "About this place")

f) Would you like to sit down? (makes her sit down if there's an appropriate chair around.
Also available as quick command from main menu)

g) Are you hungry?

h) How about a nap before we continue?

==================================================================================================

2. LET'S TALK FIGHTING STRATEGY
===============================
Subtopics:

a) COMBAT-STYLE
Use melee-weapons and get in close/Use ranged weapons and stay back.
(The alternative she is currently using will be NOT available as a dialog option.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone played Vilja with ROM (Revised Oblivion Mod). The reason why I'm asking is that, I encounter something very nasty for my game. ROM starts with a very low encumberance value.. A level 1 Breton Mage for example.. have only 20 encumberance.

How is it related to Vilja you asked? Its because ROM tweaked everyone, not just the player, thus at start, Vilja have only 36 encumberance.. and her total start gear.. weight 37. And everytime I go into bloat float, she is tired with -ve fatigue. The guard in IC also suffers this problem, btw, so its not just Vilja.

I'm trying to determined whether this is really indeed the case, or somehow I broke my mod setup.

SOLVED.

I don't have the answer to your question, but I would like to know what this mod does - it adds an encumberance factor to EVERY npc in the game?

With Vilja, you can normally toggle in her options book (in her skills report menu) whether or not she will get encumbered or not. If she is set to be encumbered (which she is by default) and and extra encumberance factor is added to her with the ROM mod, she might be surprisingly weak. I would toggle the "can get encumbered" in her options book to "no", because then she will only be encumbered by the ROM mod and not by two mods at the same time.

Sorry.. case solves.. it was my mistake.

Somehow, I ticked the strength multiplier to encumberance in wrye bash tweak setting config and set it to 1.

:I feel so stupid now ._.

Sorry again.

I'm glad it was sorted, and that there was no real problem :)

Will be good for other ROM-users to know, too.

Excellent mod, thank you for all your effort. It is good to have a companion that actually feels like one, instead of an emotionless shadow that just gets in the way when you are fighting. :)

I just wanted to say that this mod is incredible. It installed without a hitch and Vilja had me at hello. I had no idea she was not essential and she got killed by a trap in a dungeon and it saddened me after only an hour of her company. I reloaded a save game rather than bury her and our adventure continued...

I was impressed with her relevant pvssyr, speaking about where we were and what what we were doing, offering advice about where to go for training in a particular area. She has me doing things for her already, like buy her wine to drink so the next time she is thirsty I will have something for her. She's not the perfect companion, making her even more perfect. She complains of being tired or bored which keeps me on my toes instead of having the typical mindless lifeless AI following me around.

Anyhow, I love this mod and I want to get to know her more. Perhaps you are aware of my work, The romancing of Eyja was one of the first big romance/companion mods out there and it feels like you continued to improve in many ways I couldn't dream of back then. (no obse).

Anyhow, I do have one question. Is it possible for her to repair her own equipment?

Keep up the excellent work!

Hi Madmole,

I'm glad you enjoy Vilja, hope you will continue to do so :). Of course I have heard of and even tried out your Romancing of Eyja, and, guess what - there's even unique interaction added between Vilja and your Eyja. As you have replaced Eyja with a npc with another ID-name, you have to "introduce" them, but once you have done so, Vilja should be well aware if Eyja is in tow, and this should show up both when you are talking to Vilja and when she is in conversations with Eyja. (Vilja will of course interact with several others companions, too, which you probably have heard of - Neeshka, Arren, Viconia, Sonia to mention a few.)

You can actually toggle Vilja to be essential/non-essential and toggle quite a few other things as well - go to her options book which you will find in her skill reports menu. (If you haven't read the Important notes on Gameplay and the Dialog Manual, it might be good to do so, as well). Currently, she cannot repair her own armor, as we haven't wanted to make her dependant on OBSE and there is a good alternative: if you download the http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=29652 by b3w4r3. This mod will make it possible for Vilja as well as any other companion to repair their own armor. However, we are tinkering on a new version, and I believe that CDCooley will be looking into possibilities to implement so that she can repair her armor if you have OBSE installed (i.e. without adding OBSE dependancy).

Hi Emma,
I noticed that Eyja was in a list of names to introduce Vilja to, and thought well maybe your mod just intelligently could pick your other companion names somehow through and array function. I can't afford Rosethorn Hall or eyja yet, so I will have to wait a while to see them interact, but I am excited to see what you have done.

I was thinking I could make a magic repair hammer that never breaks with an obse script on it, and I give it to any NPC and it repairs their armor for them as long as it is in inventory. Something really simple that can be bought at a store and given to any NPC with a share function. Then when they are idle they could play a repair anim from shivering isles or something without the player having to tell them to, making it more lifelike.

I will have to set her to essential. I didn't read everything because I wanted to have some surprises. Indeed I was, from the start it was epic. Keep up the good work!

Your OBSE repair hammer sounds like a wonderful idea for a mod. I think it's great every time one can coordinate so the same feature doesn't have to be incorporated in every mod; having mods that makes it possible to have any companion repairing armor, for instance, is so much simpler than every modder incorporating it with their companion. One solution works for all - that's beneficial for everyone! And it's also great when one can stay away from adding unnecessary dependancies from mods. Obviously, most of us use OBSE when playing Oblivion, but it's still an advantage to avoid additional dependancies for example for mods like Vilja and other companions.

I don't think the documentation for Vilja includes that many "spoilers" - I've tried to stay away from that. In fact, I don't think anything from the three questlines are mentioned in the documentation. But, as the mod is relatively complex, it IS an advantage to at least browse through the documentation to understand approx what one can expect. For instance, there you can read up on how to introduce Vilja and other companions to each other. :)

Thanks! Well I thought of the hammer a few days ago when I got tired of telling my CM partner to repair her armor, and I was wanting a mod that had a horse riding NPC and stumbled across yours ;) Needless to say both of them could use the repair hammer, as well as the thralls in my vampire mod Unholy Darkness, and probably some future companions as well, so the universal NPC repair hammer will be the solution. I was also going to make an "essential object" which you can share with an npc to make them essential.

I wasn't sure if there were even spoilers, but the way I like to play mods is to only read enough about it to catch my interest, read the installation section, and then play in game to see if I like it. Then I'll read more if I need to, but sometimes reading too much about a mod takes away all the excitement. If you know everything there is to know before you play you will either be disappointed because you expected it to be a certain way, or you will be upset if it isn't actually available to you yet. So for me mods are best if you just let the game explain it to you and you learn as you play, it feels more real world like to me, and then if I can't figure it out I'll resort to reading the manual :) Needless to say your mod flows great without knowing much about it. Vilja explains herself in a very natural way, making her the best companion I've ever had. Even better than Eyja! Well maybe for me anyway because I know every little thing Eyja might do, and to me surprise is most fun. (as I've already explained, lol).

I'll let you know when I get the hammer done.

i noticed recently that one of her dialog options went missing.
a) Tell me about yourself ..... ( not sure if that is suppose to happen as this is the farthest ive made it through the game with her as a companion. ) ive compleated 2 of her quests so far.

also noticed that when i used the
How about a cozy evening at home? topic she starts the dinner by taking the items from my inventory. (sits down to eat.) then jumps up saying something about the bread being done. then gets her self a beer and goes into wander mode. so i went to bed around 11 woke up and went to leave and she was like where do you think your going. and was still thinking that we were suppose to be having our evening at home. . i just reset to a previous save and have since avoided this topic.

Oh dear, I think you ran into a little oddity I didn't think of catering for when I made the add-on for Red Rose Manor - I'm pretty sure that was where she wanted to bring you bread! Yes, the scripted tokens from the manor-add-on can potentially override the cozy evening dialog and counter, I realize that now, and should look into it. I believe that once she has finished was she wanted to do in the manor, she will gladly sit down again if asked and continue to cozy evening. However, I realize that it can be a very loooooong evening, if she persists in doing house-tasks in between.

It is true that at some point, she will stop telling you more things about her past. However... if you invite her to an evening out or a cozy evening at home and then initiate dialog with her during this time, "Tell me about yourself" will again show up as a topic. Sometimes, she will repeat tid-bits from what she has already told you earlier on, but sometimes she will indeed have new things to talk about.

Heh...
I had something very similar happen just the other day. She agreed to a "cozy evening at home". The evening-proper began when she took several food items from my inventory and in return gave me a bottle of wine as promise. She then proceeded to sit in a chair in front of the fireplace. That came off perfectly! We sat and sat and sat as the even grew old. After I time I began initiating conversation in hopes she would terminate the event. It never happened. My avatar finally gave up and went to bed.

He woke next morning to find Vilja still at the fireplace, though she might have been standing by then. He was able to get her to follow him, so assumed the "evening" have ran its course sometime during the night. Not so. They were in the Imperial City grabbing assignments (Road Patrol, merchant deliveries) when Vilja piped up and said they needed to return home and finish their "evening". We walked back to Weye manor (our home). I decided to delete all saves made during our "evening". Just then Vilja announced that the "evening" was over.

Needless to say I too will likely avoid the "cozy evening" option for now. A shame, since the first part of it came of so well it was almost magical.

-snip-

I, too, had a similar problem. I can never get Vilja to end our cozy evening. I always have to tell her we have to skip it, despite having had spent 7pm to 3am together, eating, drinking, and just sitting in front of the fireplace of Aleswell Cottage.

I figured that maybe it was some problem caused by the fact that I've changed the timescale or something, or maybe I just missed a dialogue option to end it naturally.

If you have changed the timescale, it definitely can prolong the evenings quite a bit. Still, this doesn't sound right. With Aleswell cottage, the problem could be the same as with the manor, though... Vilja takes off to do something, and the cozy evening is prolonged.

It does sound as if I should try and reproduce the problem asap.

I have also altered the time scale in my game (to 1:10) and didn't have those problems. I suppose that problem has nothing to do with the time scale.

Does she speak (her chater), when this happens?

Oh, my bad... I thought you meant how ofen *Vilja* chats! But, I'm setting that "time scale" back to "normal" (i.e. chatty) from the dialog when the cozy evening starts, so unless you adjust it again, it shouldn't matter... I am however not surprised when I hear about problems in Aleswell and Red Rose Manor - it is I who haven't thought about that there might be problems with the latest version of the Vilja add-ons in these houses (i.e. she has special pvssyr for Aleswell and the manor that could override the cozy-evening-pvssyr, and she might break off from ai-packages to do something determines by the add-on-scripts).
