[RELZ]Companion Vilja ver 2.1 - thread no 2

Post » Tue Nov 02, 2010 4:29 pm

Hi all,

I just want to add my workaround to the travel bug.

I have found that travelling in armor with Viconia and Vilja can cause crashes. I've tried them separately after having a corruption and cannot recover with any single companion, but can travel with no companions. However, telling them to wait then summoning after travel was tedious, so I restarted and am trying to keep a clean save. I believe the baldness is just a clue that my save game has been corrupted. I return to an earlier save, make companions wear casual clothes, and travel just fine, then re-armor.

I use FCOM, but have also added Mage Equipment (For Underdark) and Growlf's Hot Clothes.

The corruption is occasional, but sporadic, so it may be hard to reproduce in a short play run. It does seem to require some other activity, but I haven't seen a pattern in what causes it yet, so I can't identify the conflicting mod.

I do not believe the companion mods are the source of the error. I believe a clothing or armor mod is responsible. Since it only happens in city travel (any city according to other forum threads), something about rebuilding the NPCs after a travel to a city must get confused.

By the way, I also recently stopped the autosave system in Oblivion.ini and use only Streamsave and New Save. That seems to reduce the fre

Sorry hit the wrong button,

eliminating the autosave system seems to reduce the frequency of occurence.

In any case, I can play satisfactorily for now.

I haven't used any specific Stat modifers at all, load order is strictly through BOSS, and the only Mod I've added was Amen'thalas, witch is probably after the fact.
CorePC mention a Mart's Fatigue setting that will be configureable in the next release, I would suspect it would be a Far more common problem if it were just Mart's in general though.
I did notice One thing, in building the Patch, I had Cobl Power Exhaustion checked, unchecking it has no apperant effect on an allready affected game.

It's kinda strange that Normaly Vilja only has a Single display on Fatigue, but once affected that turns to a (Base) setting..

The two fatigue displays are because she *is* affected by something external.

It is interesting to know that it is not only Vilja who is causing problems, but also Viconia (and then probably most other companions as well). I was vaguely thinking it was related to her special torch for equipping outfits. As it seems now, it is helmets and whigs causing the problems, and if I'm interpreting you correctly it is the same for you. Probably Povuholo is right about the unofficial patch and the All Natural - Real Lights causing the problem. Maybe you can confirm that you're using either of these?

Have you tired setting her to ghost? SETGHOST is a vanilla function.

Actor set to "ghost":

The actor will not enter combat
The actor will be hurt by water damage and some traps
The actor is still able to talk and can be activated to talk.

The other very important effect is that NO spells will affect the character. That included her ability to heal herself after trap damage and falls, her ability to summon her horse, and a few other little features so it wasn't really a good long-term solution.

Weird. The Forum editor cut off half my original post. :glare:

Anyways, as I was saying - After starting off my weekend with a minor personal tragedy involving my car, I finally got settled enough to play Oblivion and had a chance to meet Vilja in game. It was nothing too serious, just very expensive and incredibly inconvienient; involved me hiking 15 miles through the countryside (thank you, military training hikes) and spoiled my former weekend plans. On the brightside - if there is one - I am now spending the weekend with some local friends and also with Vilja! ;)

Elric Dravenwulf met up with Vilja one evening at the Bloated Float. She immediately caught his notice because of her distinct accent and http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a400/Elricwolf/Oblivion%20screens/Elric%20Dravenwulf/ScreenShot44.jpg
After talking a bit, they left to find a quieter place to get a bite to eat - and got http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a400/Elricwolf/Oblivion%20screens/Elric%20Dravenwulf/ScreenShot45.jpg
They ran together to The http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a400/Elricwolf/Oblivion%20screens/Elric%20Dravenwulf/ScreenShot46.jpg...
Finding it a bit crowded, but adequate, they sat down and had http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a400/Elricwolf/Oblivion%20screens/Elric%20Dravenwulf/ScreenShot47.jpg.

Elric agreed to protect her and searched for a suitable place where they could both rest, but Vilja seemed oddly picky about the sleeping arrangements! Finally, after much confusing banter about the sleeping arrangements (confusion on Elric's part!) they finally settled down with Elric in a rented inn bed (which was big enough for 2!) and Vilja in her Bedroll (because Elric couldn't find a bedroll for sale at such a late hour and he knew Vilja refused to sleep in the Inn bed because it was apparently dirty or something ;) )

I have to say, in just the little time I've experienced Vilja's company I have already fallen in love with her quaint Scandinavian accent (I am a Bjork fan, after all), and I am finding that becoming familiar with all her quirks and personality is quite amusing (if, at times, confusing). :P

I will post more later about my experiences with it, as I am about to leave to visit some friends. But great so far! Thanks for the neat companion!

Emma - I can report to you that after playing with Vilja for several days, I have had no crashes upon fast travel with or without armor, with or without horse in tow. I also have not equipped a helmet or wig on her. She has worked flawlessly for me. I have the UOP's and All Natural Real Lights installed. Here is my LO if it will help you or the others in any way.

Sometime her comments are priceless. My character accidentally became a vampire (I reloaded afterward) and Vilja's first comment was about how she was so scared of vampires, am I?:)

Just FYI, I tried upgrading from v1.03 to 2.1 but Vilja just didn't work (wouldn't follow me) so I got all my stuff and clean saved for the new version. I managed to get about an hours play time with her. I did have an issue with her combat that perhaps wasn't evident in the earlier version, in that, she either doesn't attack at all or attacks everything. Has the middle ground gone now, i.e. she only attacks enemies after I've attacked them?
Must play more to find out (but with this bloody World Cup and some actual nice weather my oblivion time has been sevearly reduced lately)

Regard fast travel, I found Viconia caused CTDs on fast travel which was related to her horse, i.e. FT without the horse was fine, but CTD every time with it.
Since I started using an OBSE no fast-travel dll file and use Arthmoor's travel services mod, I have had ZERO fast travel problems. I also find the best fun I have is getting to and from the destinations!

We did try to make her less aggressive than a typical companion so she doesn't get in the way. She has three basic combat modes:

Aggressive: She'll attack on sight, like just about every companion. The enemies won't target her as much as they do other companions though.

Passive: If you tell her to avoid combat, she'll ignore combat unless the player is very wounded (about 30% I think) or some enemy actually hits her directly. Enemies won't usually target her so any hits are usually from area attack spells or some accident.

Defensive: I consider her default strategy the most useful because she will attack but tends to stay out of the way. She will only attack if an enemy hits her or the player gets wounded (not on the first hit though) or if the player has a weapon drawn. If you play a mage character you may want to think of raising your fists as a signal that you want her to attack.

Ah right, defensive is what I want. Good. Like I said I only got an hour play time in.

I must also say how much more I prefere the layout of the menus for stats etc. Greatly improved :tops:

I didn't have time to finish my post earlier, so in continuation; that whole bed ownership thing was kind of annoying because my chars usually sleep in inns pretty frequently at least in the early levels and it's kind of weird that a companion wont sleep in an inn bed. I mean, you can't exactly rent a separate room for them. In some inns they always try to sleep in the next room, but the door is locked so they can't get in (and if you do go to sleep, they will be trapped in this room the next morning!) I try to get her to use her bedroll, but she says something like "While you sleep in a bed, typical!" or "Just make sure there is room for me to crawl in (but she wont!)" I know this is just a companion/NPC issue, but it is frustrating... :banghead:

It wouldn't be much of an issue, I guess, except that I use the HTS mod which adds sleep (and hunger and thirst) requirements for the PC - so I have to get my rest... And I can't imagine playing without these - I can RP, but it just doesn't seem right to know that my char could go months or years without eating or sleeping with no penalties!

So as a symptomatic cure, are there any inn mods that change bed ownership to the player so the companion will use it(?) or add an extra bed or something? Just wondering if anyone has made or come across a fix for this... Once I get enough money for a house with this char, it will be okay, but for now...

Also, more Vilja-specific; she often says she is thirsty, but when I talk to her she doesn't often give me a dialog for that - the closest I can find is "Are you Hungry?" and then if she says 'yes' and I choose the option to get a bite to eat, she doesn't do anything. If she instead says she would like a drink, she just takes out her mug and starts drinking, but only occasionally does she ask to provide her with something (and I usually have draft beer handy for that) ;) I'm just trying to figure out how to give her something to eat or drink or do I just wait for her to ask?

And is there a way for me to offer strawberries, or will she eventually ask for them? (I have some in my inventory).

Oh - and regarding the Noise-reduction voice files; since Vilja's files are all packed in a BSA, and the NR files are not, do I just use the OBMM BSA redirection to enable them? Just wondering b/c there is no readme with that NR mod and no 1em_Vilja.esp folder exists (since the files are packed in BSA)...
Emma - please don't take that last bit the wrong way; the background noise would be barely noticable except that I play with music turned off and being an audiophile, I know the kinds of crazy measures you have to go through to prevent any background noise in a recording. Unless you have amazing equipment and facilities, you pretty much always need some NR processing in a professional recording! But there is nothing wrong with your voice acting and your accent and tone is quite pleasant. :)

So many questions, sorry!

I noticed this in the Merchant's Inn and thought it might be because she thought it was too cheap (10 Gold per night). Haven't tried in a more expensive inn, though.

There is a http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=28977, but it should work with the other as well without doing anything. On the other hand it's a good idea to have BSA redirection running when using replacers. But you don't have to fiddle with it for each particular mod. Once you have it running it will work for all added replacers and you won't have to think about it again.

EDIT: BTW, I noticed that Vilja has a swim topic. I missed that before. So never mind my comments earlier about swimming. :)

Vilja is just so cute. She realized that she needs a book for her researches and have reminded my char that we should look for it at least five times since then - and it's only been a couple of hours since she got the idea. Also, Estelle Renoit's comment on Vilja was priceless.

My bow "research" continues and unenchanted/unscripted mod added ones seem fine. I think it boils down to her having issues with (certain) scripted bows, but I'll keep on experimenting.

Actually, that happens in all Inns and in some player homes as well.
I was searching for a MOD that makes either the beds in Inns more companion friendly or allows for renting two rooms, but no luck so far.

Yeah, and what makes it more ironic, is sometimes Vilja says "There are no beds I would want to sleep in..." "then maybe we should find a decent inn where we can both sleep" or something along those lines. Haha - I wonder what Vilja considers a decent inn!?! She did mention Faregyl Inn, I think... ;)

Unfortunately the beds in the inns are set up so that only the players are allowed to sleep there. There might be other beds (like someone painfully discovered when Vilja went asleep behind a locked door during the night and had to be rescued in the morning ;)).

When I sleep in an inn, I simply make sure she is in followmode before I go to bed, that way she won't complain (the poor girl will be standing there watching over me the whole night). The bedroll should work, but you have to place it in an open space where she can enter it (and she won't love you for this, exactly).

As for modder-made houses, not all of them are companion friendly. If all beds are marked as belonging to the player, Vilja won't be able to sleep in them.
All houses by Korana should be companion friendly. So are of course also the cottages I have made (in my own game, I live in Millstone Farm by Korana and in my Aleswell cottage and Roxey Cottage). I know that Yevic's new Castle Eltz (sp?) is if not extremely companion friendly so at least very much companion compatible.

Oh, I completely forgot about your houses. I tried Millstone Farm which is completely awesome - but I can't run it on my rig as I get 10 FPS inside, so I was looking for alternatives. Aleswell Cottage seems perfect.

I have experienced similar problems with Vilya. However I have found that the Fighter's guild is your friend in this situation. If you are a member of the guild she will happily sleep in any of the beds there, although Cheyindal tends to be problematic due to the limited number of available beds. Also if you can unlock the doors in Waynet Inn in Weye she will sleep in the beds there as well. I had a really funny moment there, I told Vilya to relax and she immediately flaked out on the bedroll that the Elven barmaid (can't remember her name) uses, I wonder what she thought of that.

Vilya is a wonderful companion who is both funny and endearing. When you get to Llervu Hlaalu in Cheyindal you will laugh out loud at her thoughts about Vilya.

I use Arthmoor's Transportation Network and don't have any problems with it for Vilya. However I did have them with Arren who didn't come with us, summoning him promptly caused a CTD and I had to remove him from my game which was a shame.

The most companion friendly Player House MOD is for me “A better Benirus Manor”. Kethienna not only made the bed available to companions, she also removed all doors in the living area (optional).

The Houses in Skingrad and Chorrol have the right beds but they have doors; here Vilja’s question for other available beds comes to the rescue. I guide her to a bed and she happily falls asleep. In Chorrol all beds are fine, Suite or bed rooms does not matter, in Skingrad is a double bed in the 3rd floor.

Just downloading Emma’s house MODs to have some other options, Anvil is a bit too far for daily commuting.

So I'm checking out Aleswell Cottage with Vilja and it's really nice. In the upper bedroom section with two beds Vilja said that she was tired so I thought I'd let her choose bed. And, of course, she chose the cooler one in the loft. When she was sleeping I thought I'd check out the house more closely - and for a couple of seconds I actually tried to be as quiet as possible doing so. It was bit embarrassing actually - but it says something about how endearing Vilja is.

Anyway, it's her new house now.

err.. Emma, dont know how to say this but...

Well, your girl has acquired a new ability I have never seen before in Vilja

And I think you need a new Bikini, one with a big letter S on the front, and hopefully she is not vulnerable to Kryptonite :) .....

We had just crossed the water directly behind Vilja in the above screenshot (sideways cave is just behind me in the screenshot), and I was wondering why she was taking a while to catch up, she has taken to swimming through the air

Cue the song "She swims through the air with the greatest of ease, that daring young girl in her flying bikini"

I let her follow around like this walking backwards until a T.I.E bandit I didn't notice hit me with a poison arrow so could not try out much in the short time it was happening, but while I was mortally wounded on the floor she did put on her armour and drew her elven sword, then started swimming/flying towards my foe......

I didn't get to see the rest of the Supergirl film but I know it wasn't a dream because I have the screenshots to prove it :)

Edit: Erm, sorry if this is distressing, but it was funny.
