[RELZ] Companion Vilja ver 2.2 - thread no 5

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 10:09 pm

Personally I can't stand pop-up messages though. Which is probably why I didn't think about making one for her. I hate it when the game tells me things that I wouldn't otherwise know through messages. The absolute worst are those inial quest messages to remind you that you have some plugin loaded. In my personal version of Vilja, there's no initial quest message until I actually get to the Waterfront. I blame it all on Bethesda's example and without Strategy Master's SM Plugin Refurbish I probably wouldn't install any of the official plugins. I built my own delayed start for the Knights of the Nine and the main quest too.

But it had one. Was that Emma's? Anyway, you could make it optional via the menu. And it's not a biggie either.

Yes, that was the journal entry that ended the quest. At the same time other functional things, like her summon spell, was removed.

I think it is better as it is now, I was all for the change. I mean, who would *not* examine their dead companion (if nothing else so at least in order to grab some of the bettr things in her inventory :P), and then you'll get the new message. Also, the minute of scare now, after a tough fight, enemy is beaten but... where is Vilja? She's missing... is she... dead?? Running around, looking for her.. and then, finally, right behind me: "Pardon me for asking, but are you sure you know where you are going?"

I think this adds a lot to the immersion-factor - with ver 2.1 I always *knew* and when I got that message, I simply quit the game, even if I was in the middle of a fight.

I checked her personality and it is set at 80, I still used the console command to see if there would be any change but it didn't help :(

Right... with ver 2.1 we know there are two people she doesn't 'like'. One is Shady Sam and one is Maiq, and in both cases it is a result of how their factions are set up. In ver 2.2 we have cured her antagonism towards Sam, but she still hates Maiq, and I will use this to add in a little story of why she hates him. Guards shouldn't care about this, though, as Maiq is only in the creature-faction.

Now, who did she attack in your game, and what were the circumstances? What was her fighting set at? Attack everything on sight? Is she still aggressive?

If she is, and her personality is 80, I don't know what is affecting her, but there is one general fix that one can always try when something is up with a companion or any other npc. Bring Vilja to a safe interior, leave her there for +72 game hours. When you return to her, all kind of weird effects tend to be gone. Now, if she stops attacking npcs... but the later starts again, then one must wonder what is affecting her.

That's fine by me, although I've never understood this "popups are immersion breaking" point of view personally. Used sparingly and appropriately I tend to like them - I'd even say they can heighten my sense of immersion, as in this particular case. But, anyway, I'll be plenty  whether or not I get the entry.

I'm not a fan of message spam. But in many quests, it's not immediately apparent that you've done the right thing, or are on the right track. These kinds of popup quest updates can be most welcome at times... and when you play different characters or have only a little time to spend with Oblivion, their journal entries can be helpful in refreshing your memory on where you left off. I especially like the ones that are handled the way OOO did it (just one example, there are others)... they provide details that you may have missed along the way, information about a specific npc that one would only notice after you killed him/her, or hints about how a character might feel after completing that stage of the quest ... as well as a subtle pointer on where to go next. Those that successfully pull off a dry sense of humor (as in KDQ) are just plain refreshing, when everything else is usually so serious. By far the most annoying and immersion-breaking things about popups or quest entries are glaring spelling/grammatical errors, or throwing up a one-liner that gives no information at all.

I guess what I would really like is a second type of quest entry. One that just silently appears in your journal without the popup. Or even just an option to make all of them do that. Then all of those initial quest messages could stay to remind me of how to get a quest started from some mod without turning the first few minutes of my escape from prison (in a new game) from becoming a very annoying version of "whack-a-mole" with the popups. With all of the DLC and many other mods, that becomes a mini-game all it's own. And then there are the OBSE mods that want me to pick keystrokes. One of the reasons I wanted to add some extra delay to Vilja's initial quest message was to separate it from the mass of others.

I really like this companion, I havnt had her around alot yet, but unique voice and personality is interesting. I customized her with Xenius's vampire race, after some tweaking got her functioning perfectly with it. Idea being I can vamp her with MM's darkness mod.

I know what you mean about that. I haven't started a new game for a while now, but when I do I'll probably try out an alternate start mod or main quest delayer--not only because I hate clicking through the mass of popup boxes, but also because I like the idea of letting the character initiate whichever quests he wants to handle ... instead of having to lug around that crazy amulet for all time, when he obviously was not created with the main quest in mind. With mods like Vilja, that isn't usually a problem. The mod can always be activated after the character leaves the sewers, as long as you don't mind rebashing patches.

I did have her set to attack enemy's on site but then changed that to avoid fighting but that still wasn't working...she was attacking town guards and when I enter a shop she would attack the owner, in a 1 on 1 she would always win but if other guards see it and join the fight 9/10 times the would lose, after the kills he NPC if I use the Midas Revive spell to bring them back she wouldn't attack them again (not sure what would happen if I exit and re-enter the shop again though).
I'll give the +72 hour wait thing a try and report back with the result.

Sorry for OT, but what spell is that? Didn't know about it and checking Aurum Incantatem I couldn't find a resurrect spell either.

EDIT: Ah, it's the Holy Resurrect spell. I've actually never done the heaven realm so that would explain a lot. Time to do some Midas quests I guess.

I've been using Vilja 2.2 for a couple of weeks and and I have to say that I'm enjoying her company. I've also downloaded the mod for updating the inns so that Vilja will easily find a bed to sleep in (Thanks for that, Emma!).

I ran into a problem this past week when I had been playing for a while and noticed that Vilja was missing; she had not returned from one of her sidetrips. In the past I could summon her back, but this time, even the summon spell was missing from my menu! After reading this thread, I'm now guessing that she died... And I know not where! Sometimes I get so focused on a quest that I lose track of time, and companions, and even eating. Anyway, I couldn't bring myself to play without Vilja, so I began testing my savegames and found that she was last with me approximately 8 hours of realtime ago. So now I'm redoing a few quests, and being more careful with Vilja (yes, I know, I can make Vilja immortal, but that seems too heavyhanded).

So if you could add the popup back in to alert me when Vilja dies, I'd definitely appreciate it. I'll take better care of Vilja, but it's also good to know if something happens to her when she's run off after a goblin.

And thanks for the fun mod!

Are you possibly using any mods that might affect the *guards* or the shop owners? This surely isn't how she should behave. Do you know if your pc-char was injured when it happened? Not that she should attack anyway, but it would tell a little more about her reasons for attacking (protecting you).

I get CTDs on save when doing
Spoiler
Zrenk Ruin
during that quest. It seems to be connected to something with
Spoiler
Carleon Corneir's loot or possible quest advances when having looted him and read the Perfumed Letter.
That is, I have no issues saving before looting him - but it has crashed four times in a row when trying to save after it. One time I tried teleporting to another cell before saving - but it CTDd then as well so it shouldn't be connected to anything in the cell per se. The last try it didn't CTD on save but it CTDd when activating Vilja just afterwards. Also, it's the first CTDs on save I've had during this game (+170 hours) IIRC so it shouldn't be caused by general instability on my side.

EDIT: I managed to get through it at last and make a functioning save afterwards, but something seems to be a bit wonky with the quest stages or scripts or something during this particular part I'd guess.

I wonder if it related to

picking up Wolfgang? He has a new texture in ver 2.2, this hasn't been thoroughly tested. Had you picked him up at this point? Or did you do that later?

Both yes and no -
Spoiler
the first time I had the CTD it was after picking him up, the one that happened after my char teleported was also with him - the others were before picking him up. But he's of course in the same cell so that could perhaps be it.

EDIT: I think you're right. I still get CTDs on save and as I'm past the quest updates and the dungeon - and he's in the same cell when trying to make the save it sounds like that could be it.

EDIT: Yes, and when leaving him in once cell and saving in another I have no issues, so it seems to be connected to the new textures.

Well Sonia finally got the Paralyzed bug and I had to "Resurrect" her, that seems to work Quite well. (but still doesn't seem right)

I seen all the talk about Neeshka and thought I'd try her out, (originally planned to dump Sonia but couldn't bring myself to do it as yet)
now whenever we run into enemies, ether/or both, Vilja and Sonia attack her Relentlessly until she passes out, then their fine.
(apparently they think she needs More Combat training)

DarNified UI has the option to turn off quest pop-ups. The sound still plays and they just appear in your quest log.

Alright...
First of all, could you please re-download and re-install ver 2.2? The reason why I ask you to do this is that I made a slight adjustment and re-uploaded - it happened so quickly that only maybe 3-10 people got the first ver 2.2. But just to make sure we talk about the same files, it would be good.

now,
Spoiler
among the textures (textures/Characters/Vilja) you should find one called wolfgang.dds and one called wolfgang_brown.dds. Rename the wolfgang.dds to wolfgang_new.dds and rename the wolfgang_brown.dds to wolfgang.dds. This is the old game-original texture, and Wolfgang should now have it. See if that helps - hopefully it will.

Maybe they don't like competition

Seriously, I have no idea. Nesshka has been part of my game since summer 2009 and she and Vilja gets along just fine. I have also had all three ladies living in the same house without fighting. Is by any chance Neeshka just updated by the author, so that he might have added some brandnew feature/faction/whatever to her?

I have Vilja and Neeshka as companions and we've cleared out a few dungeons with no problems. I don't think I've ever seen them attack each other, as I recall. I don't have Sonia on my current game, maybe she adds an additional variable? There are a few different versions of Sonia, also. I think I was using "Sonia 2".

I been a little too busy to really play lately (my free time is spent trying to actually mod more), but it's great to see Vilja still going strong with thread 5 btw. :goodjob:

Actually, on the Vilja/Sonia/Neeshka issue... I think I understand now what might be up (or rather, my memory started to work again, I've heard of something related to this before, although Vilja wasn't involved that time).

The thing is that for some reason, Sonia's responsibility it set really, really high and so is her confidence. Which means that she will be confident to righteously deal with anyone who does something outside the law. Neeshka hitting Vilja or the player might very well trigger an unsuspected row of actions, including Vilja deciding to help her good buddy to eliminate blue-skinned red-eyed people :P.

If you use the console to set Sonia's responsibility to 0, my guess is that the girls will be much better friends.

Well there's No problems at all until we get into a battle, then generally after the first confrontation, Neeshka's getting beat by ether or both of the other two, once she's knocked out, everybody's Fine again, I just have to figure She's a Newcommer, and they have to teach her how things are done. :toughninja:
Three companions are actually too much to move around with, I generally get Blocked every where I go, I'm thinking I'll leave someone at home before long... :whistling:
It Is Sonia II, I was going to try The Red, but them again, I'd have to dump Sonia, and it just doesn't feel right... :nope:

Re-downloading/re-installing 2.2 seems to have fixed it. I made three saves in a row w/o issues. :)

Also, I think he looks sharper/better now, so perhaps it was set up wrongly in the version I had or something.

EDIT: Might have been premature there as I just got a CTD on save again. I'll try your second tip.
