Companions are refusing to use default firearms

For some reason, none of my companions will use their default firearms. According to the companion wheel, they're in ranged mode, but at the first sign of an enemy they go charging in with a melee weapon. I even tried giving them ammo (even though they shouldn't need it), and still no luck. They seem more than willing to pick up fallen guns and use those, but not their defaults, even when I leave the with nothing else. Bloatflys also seem affected; they do the "stinging" animation, but don't fire any projectiles. The only exception is ED-E, but he doesn't have a melee mode.

I know it's not one of the mods I was running, I shut them all off and still have this issue.

Anybody else having this problem, or know of a fix?

If you set them to melee and then back to ranged will the weapon show up holstered? If not perhaps it wasn't put back after coming out of a casino (or some other location that takes your weapons).

It shows the melee weapon holstered. If I switch them to melee and back to ranged, they still go right back to the melee weapon.

I haven't been to a casino, so it's not that.

I found a sort of workaround with this mod - http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=37109. Just give them a couple rounds of hollowpoints, and when they've used it, they go back to their regular unlimited ammo.

Still wish I knew what was causing this though. The bloatflies just sort of bobbing there shaking their butts at me is kind of disturbing.
