Companions, Mounts and Mounted Combat

Post » Fri Nov 12, 2010 8:57 am

Recently read a thread that discussed various forms of Khajit and came across a reference to Senche-raht and Senche - which it seems are combat mounts (Battlecats).

I'd like to see mounted combat and even companion pets in TES:V, but I would especially like to see different mount and companion pet types, without restrictions.

Some of the basic companion pets / familiars could be:
  • Hunting Dogs
  • Wolves
  • Big Cats (like the Senche maybe)
  • Raptors (Argonian based lizards)
  • Bears
  • Nix-based creatures like nix hounds

Perhaps for heavy mage players we could have Will o the Wisp swarms or other magical type companions.

Then for mounts:
  • Horses
  • Big Wolves
  • Big Cats (larger than the companions)
  • Raptors (larger than the companions)
  • Bears
  • Kwamma-based creatures
  • Mini-stilt rider type creatures

Mounts should have armor and saddle slots and be able to take saddle bags etc.

Different mounts/companions should have different speeds, attack styles and abilities. Some might give way to fear, others might become uncontrollable and end up getting themselves killed etc.

Regarding more sentient companions - I'm not a huge fan of in-game romance, really if you're looking for that you need to get out more and date or get married or something, having said that I'm not opposed to it either. It makes little difference to me either way as I would probably only follow that if it was quest based - I'm one of those "leave no quest undone" kinda players.

No. These - mounts and mounted combat - are wasteful features. Companions are already present. Going deeper will waste resources (read: time).

I would love that and maybe a armor maker for mounts? Also a saddle and saddle bag maker too. Also for mounts guars and woolly mammoths.

(not trying to bump post only trying to realy place my opinion)

Mounted combat is HUGELY important. Next to the Bow, the Horse was the most important military technology (if you will) available to close combatants in history.

ObFreak - you're right - Guars and Woolly Mammoths make sense as mounts. And I like the armor, saddle and saddle bag sellers idea too.

Spoiler
It was destroyed? I presume you're referring to The Infernal City. While it mentions that Vvardenfell was destroyed - I think it implied that the cities and people were killed (to be used to fuel the floating city) as opposed to ALL the wildlife. In any case there might be survivors who fled??

Whether or not there are Kwama, Nix, Stiltriders and Guars is not really the point. The point is that I'd like to see more mount types and more companion animal types.

I'm hoping to see mounts and the addition of mounted combat in the next game. I just don't want them to make it a PITA to use as it was in Oblivion. After saving enough money to buy a horse, I probably used it for about an hour before thinking, 'screw this, it's easier to just run everywhere'. I tried using the horse again later on in the game, only to discover that my character could actually run faster. After that, I just gave up on using horses. I thought it was a good addition to the series, but it wasn't implemented very well. As for companions, I'd be for the addition of both animal companions and NPC companions, but there are other things that I'd rather they focus on perfecting first.

I hope Todd meant that comment to a great degree on redoing technology. Oblivion's horses felt clunky to me, but I really like horses, so I would like to see them brought back in a smoother fashion, preferably including mounted combat and enemies not attacking my horse. That got annoying. Not only did I have to get off my horse to fight enemies, but they were sometimes trying to slaughter my horse rather than me, and in the case of after getting the boots of the Crusader, they always tried to slaughter my horse instead of me. Even if it is a bit unrealistic, I would prefer the Daggerfall style of fitting them in your pocket and having them be un-attackable, but minus the annoying noise.

Definitely. The other thing that was really lacking with the horses was that they couldn't help you carry extra loot. Isn't a beast of burden supposed to help you with, you know, your 'burden'? I don't understand how they missed that.

They even had it in previous games, like the cart in Daggerfall, and http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Tribunal:Rerlas_Mon if you had the Tribunal expansion for Morrowind. Although it's possible in Oblivion, knock out Shadowmere and put your items into the horse, and just wait until it's awake to ride it. Same thing for accessing the items. Although it would fall under glitch exploits rather then good game mechanics, and can cause some unwanted effects if you're not fully patched.
