Companions Steal Exp?

Post » Sat Oct 16, 2010 5:23 pm

Anyone know if companions take some of your exp this time around?

Will I be able to roll a pure Charisma character and let my minions do my killing and collect exp?

Sorry if this has been answered already. I could not find it. Plus the computer I am on at the moment is slow.

I hope they changed it so companion kills count as your kills; it was really frustrating to have that happen in FO3.

I haven't heard anything official so I could be exactly wrong, but I expect it to be like Fallout 3 where you have to do 2/3rds (or was it 50%) of the damage yourself to get awarded the xp for the kill.

I think I heard somewhere that you get awarded XP when your companions kill others. I'm not sure if it's the same XP you would get or a reduced amount. But to be honest, I think there should be consequences for not doing the dirty work yourself and letting your companions make the combat easier. I didn't use companions much in FO3 for this reason, I like to work alone, and I'll likely do the same in NV.

I hope they do, that way it'll take longer to level up.

I hope it is just reduced EXP, and I hope companions can level up too....

Well I am hoping you get full exp or maybe 75% exp for companion kills.

I fallout 3 it just felt like my companions were there to slow down my leveling, so I almost never used them, until max level.

Maybe you would get full exp from companions based on your Charisma?

I mean, if your charisma is that high then you are most likely playing in a way that full exp from companions would make sense.

Exploit them I say.

I hire them, I help them, I outfit them, I tell them what to do. I should get the experience. It is only fair. It's not like they have a Union or something.

Easiest way to avoid- don't use companions... But I do agree, it's annoying when they take your kill.

It has been mentioned before that we want people to use their companions without penalty. They do not steal your xp when they kill. Consider them your mutant third-arm (you even get the kill cam shots if they finish off the last enemy in an encounter).

Ok, now that we know that companions give you their XP for their kills............. do we have to stick with them once we hire them? Or can we tell them to 'go wait in the corner' or something like we could in FO3?

Search up the companion wheel.

I hated companions in Oblivion and Fallout3, I really don't see that changing in NV. I like stealth based play, hit and run and subterfuge/sabotage. My play-style and companions mix like oil and water.

I realize I am in the minority on this, as companions and companion mods are a huge deal. To each their own. :)

Your not alone, my stealth playthroughs are my favorite. And I know that companions can sometimes screw things up, but with the companion wheel its hopefully alot easier to manage.
Also seeing as Lily is pretty much the stealth companion she would probably be a good choice on this.

@KOMBATWOMBAT: You don't even need to make them sit in a corner as you can now tell them to be passive. This means they will follow you, but they will then avoid combat with enemies.

@Frank: Thanks for explaining. It's definately better to get all of the experience points than to not get any at all. What I would of really liked would of been to get a percentage of the total experience points according to how much percentage of the enemie's health you took. This would still make you work for experience points instead of having a companion do all of the work. This would also make it so you won't be robbed of experience.
