Companions?

Post » Mon Feb 01, 2010 2:49 pm

Okay so I'm a little on the fence about Companions. Companions in FO:NV were cool. They gave a interesting side quest, perks, gave their input on some things, and let you carry more loot at any time. But it quickly became clear that I didn't need to fight my battles, because Boone had dropped everyone in a mile radius before I knew where the enemies were.

So maybe your companions should level up with you? It would make companions more interactive and interesting too have while making them less of a one man army.

So please, leave your thoughts on this.

Edit: I was thinking about this and I got to thinking about the leveling up idea. I think it would be cool if you could spend skill points and stuff like that and make companions only have certain skills ( give enough variety so that it's not pointless, but don't give a Knight the ability to cast magic for example.)

If they make companions more...intelligent, I wouldn't have mind it so much as it wouldn't feel like baby sitting. Hell, every companion I had had would end up dead, or put me in some horrid positions that I'd end up telling them to gtfo as they were quite dumb. Of course, I don't want to be baby sat either.

Depends on how they are done. I liked them in F:NV but couldn't stand them in Fo3.

This tread has been done before.

I would love some companions and, oh dare I say it, romance options, if they are done well.

I'd like to have Companions, especially with menus and everything like in New Vegas. So long as they're Essential just like in NV (means they can't die). I already get fed up with my NV companions wandering off and getting knocked unconscious by something, I'd feel like I was babysitting if they could actually die.

I would like to see them in the game. Optional, so people who want to play loners can do so. But have them there for those of us who don't want to play loners.

I would love to have optional companions - lack of proper social interactions is one of the weakest point of ES as a series - the main character always exists outside of the society it seams, it would be great if we could have some meaningful interactions with NPCs - pets, companions, friends, and maybe even romantic interests... Thou the last one is as likely as snowstorm in Kalahari dessert :D But one can dream :)

Companions, yes, and the more interaction and personality they have the better - provided there are a few to choose from so you don't get stuck with one you find psychotoxic :).

They should definitely not be overpowered. They should ease your way through the game a little, levelling up with you, but shouldn't make it a walk in the park. Possibly there should always be some cost involved - like a daily wage or the need to provide them with new toys now and again - to offset the benefit they bring.

The 'toys' could vary from one companion to another. One might want to be occasionally supplied with expensive liquor, another might sometimes demand books of lore and history, another may need intermittent supplies of exotic jewelry. The one needing the least 'upkeep' would be the mercenary, who'd be happy with a small daily wage and first pick of the looted armour and weapons; the others would need more micro-management, and so could be either annoying or rewarding, depending on the player.

Anyway, just a thought :).

You're right, but I don't actually play hardcoe mode. In my opinion, hardcoe is more of an annoyance than an actual challenge, to be honest. It just drained all my caps away. XD

Vanilla hardcoe mode in FNV is definately annoying. But once you get some mods that balances it, it gets way more interesting and challenging.

I am not against companions if they would be just a temporary companions like we already had in Oblivion. So, after you finish certain quests, he goes away. As for animal companions, I am ok with that, as long as the companion is not stronger than you. Companion should help you achieve goals, but not do it instead of you. I like that skinned hound in Shivering Isles, although I lost him rather fast, couldn't find him where I left him.

In essence, temporary companions - ok, companions through the whole game - no.

That's cool then. I'm actually waiting for my new sound card to come through the post before I can play the PC version, because my current one can't handle NV's sounds. Kind of weird, because it was fine with Oblivion and Fallout 3...

I like having the difficulty on normal or hard so that when I run into a deathclaw I could kill it. It was when I ran into weaker enemies he annoyed me. If I was playing on very hard then the deathclaws would decimate me an him easily so that's not an easy solution.

I don't like companions. I prefer going alone.
So... therefore I don't want companions, and even if there is, then I want it to be optional, so that I can choose not to have one.

Yeah, mods that end up forcing me to have companions annoy me. I usually tell them to way at the new home, that I'll never visit again.

Companions and pets are OK as long as they're intelligent, don't get in my way during a fight, don't get upset when I accidentally hit them when they do get in my way during a fight, sneak when I sneak, and stay put when I tell them to wait.

ive always wanted to play an immersive first person party based game. i would play the thief who would spot and disarm traps and open chests and do sneaky missions while my companions could fill the roles of axe wielding warrior and lightning bolt casting mage. PC players got to do this with mods in morrowind and oblivon like the CM Partners series and talkie toasters mod. it adds a whole new level of gameplay.

one of my biggest problems with a unmodded TES game is that the world literally revolves around you. its annoying to grow from a prisoner to a master of the universe in a few in game weeks and be taking on small armies all by yourself. having companions along reduces that dramatically. at least, after you killed a dozen daedra you can say that your companions helped you out instead of saying that the game is too easy. :)
