Comparing TES to Grand Theft Auto

Post » Sun Jun 22, 2014 4:58 am

I recently had an idea about these two games. If anyone has played the gta series you will know what I mean. Lets look at the ps2 era of gta we had gta vice city which was graphically superior to gta 3 and had much better physics and such. Then we got san andreas it had the same graphics as vice city, but it was loaded with things to do. It had bikes mountain climbing, jet packs, a level system, car pimping, ect. The same can be said for the ps4 era were gta 4 was graphically and physically superior to gta san andreas but was lacking in contetn then we got the next installment and much more was added. And to be honest gta 4 and gta vice city left me slightly unimpressed when compared to the other versions.

This is what I would like to see from the elder scrolls. I would like there to be much more content even some things that are pointless to some people (like weight lifting and weight gain in san andreas). The more the better. However, I would like it to constantly upgrade the graphics and physics but go ham on content as well. What do you think?

You should never compare TES to that terrible, piece of garbage series. They are not even the same type of series, one is a RPG, the other is an action-adventure series, they have COMPLETELY different goals in mind when being created.

I'm not the biggest fan of it either, I just like the way they go crazy on content on their second installments and would like to see the elder scrolls to do the same. I think something can be learned from the amount of things put into san andreas and the newest game. Its crazy how bare vice city and 4 felt compared to those.

Quite frankly, the graphics are good enough. They can stop adding eye candy to the game, and just add content.

You can't compare the two. Both are great series, the standards of the industry if you will for their content and gameplay and stories, but they are very very different games.

GTA =/= TES

GTA and TES are both good but it is impossible to compare two completley different Genres

I don't think it's impossible to compare them. Both are sandbox games that go for immersion. Both do storytelling. Both have lore even.

I don't tend to do the side-activity things in GTA that much. What I do like is the gang battles in GTA 4, or at least the big firefight ones. Otherwise I just drive around causing chaos. So GTA 4 was a great game as far as I am concerned.

GTA has better storytelling than TES. But TES has more quest content. I guess it's hard to do both quality and quantity. There were loads of side events in GTA5 I have to admit.

And TES is RPG of course, so you have a lot more tactical tools and varied ways of responding to events. More choice of outcomes in GTA would be great. (They have some choices but not many.) For tactics I guess it will always remain a simple shooter.

While we're at it let's compare basketball to oil drilling.

At least TES works and has a root menu when I turn it on. I often get some B.S. about "unable to Load Online" on GTA.

Hes not comparing the games straight up with each other, just how the content was added to new series, there's nothing wrong with that and is completely comparable.

GTA vice city had improved graphics and gameplay, but it wasnt until san andreas which kept all the same graphics and gameplay but instead used all their work on game content, which is why san andreas has a huge amount of game content. GTA IV on the other hand, was completely made from scratch again, not using any assets from the previous games. The final result was a great smooth playing game, but with content gutted from it.

It would be the same as taking Skyrim graphics and base gameplay, and for the next elder scrolls game using that and spending all your development time on game content like spell making, more quests and guilds, more choices and whatnot.

Frankly i would welcome it if it meant deeper RPG system and mechanics behind the scenes with elder scrolls. Unfortunately i dont see it happening because bethesda starts every ES game from scratch, making new graphics and all that with every installment. They would have to make ES6 to be the first modern day ES game to use assets of the previous game and just expand upon them.

It's basically the exact same thing that happened with Fallout 3 and Fallout new vegas. Bethesda made the game from scratch, graphics and system and whatnot, but then Obsidian took those assets and built New Vegas off of it (which is why it took way less time to make new vegas) and added a lot more stuff mechanic wise, they didnt have to spend all the time making simple graphics, stat progressions and all that, they already had a lot to work with.

Personally i think it would make overall better gameplay and more content, especially if done with the Elder scrolls games and I personally think the graphics are perfect the way they are, id rather that they used the exact same graphics of skyrim, but spent more time making the next TES game much more complex when it came to the RPG system, like Morrowind is.

I was about to say this as well. He's not comparing the two at all gameplay wise. More so how they're developed.

Fallout 3 to Fallout New Vegas is a good example as pointed out, like Vice City to San Andreas.

TES had always had enough content, the problem with TES, in my view, is not low content but rather a decrease of rpg depth. It's becoming shallower in every installment.

Exactly this. TES is a watered down buggy sideshow anymore.

He... compared them in light of what is included or missing from different versions.

Calm down.

And GTA is fantastic. Not the same, obviously, but what they do, they do great.

Actually, San Andreas had worse graphics than Vice City. The textures were worse, the character models and facial animations were inferior, and everything just looked dull, drab, and overcast, as opposed to VC's sharper and more colorful visuals. That big map came with a lot of costs, to say nothing of the excessive pop-in it had going that made flying more dangerous and difficult than it had any right to be. Though on the other hand, VC also had lower spawn rates, so it also had fewer characters and vehicles on the screen.

You're not going to get many people here to agree with you, but I for one would agree to a point. Some TES titles can't matchup to certain GTA titles, and vice verse you can't matchup some GTA titles to certain TES titles.

They're both bad for the planet (ok that's not true, unless by basketball you mean the NBA).

I agree with you guys too. For example, Morrowind's quests (overall) were all pretty good. Oblivion's TG and Oblivion's SI were also good. Skyrim's Dragonborn DLC and Dawnguard (Dawnguard side) were also good (Just one was short and the other had some minor issues).

But a lot of the other questlines I didn't mentioned were "okay" or terrible... GTA major questlines tend to be overall rather good.

Compare an epic open world series to an adolescent, dudebro gangster game with terrible gameplay.

No.

It could use some work, but I wouldn't say TES has "terrible" gameplay.

No, I'm saying GTA has terrible gameplay. At least GTA4 did. And I played a bit of GTA5, not much had changed.

...that one flew over my head. Been a long day.

I understand the point of the OP, but I feel that the Elder Scrolls games have enough content. The issue is the quality of that content.

Bethesda does have good writers locked away somewhere(The Pitt), but they so rarely use them. Graphically and scope-wise,I found Skyrim astounding. Its just a shame that they used such uninspiring characters and quests to fill it with. This, at least, is one thing the GTA series does leaps and bounds better then the two recent ES games(haven't played anything earlier). You could travel all over Vice City, San Andreas and the Liberty Cities and you'd find interesting people everywhere.

I assume you read the title and not the OP?

Both Skyrim and GTA V are in my top 5 favourite games of all time, but the series themselves are pretty incomparable.

I sorta agree and disagree. GTA is an RPG and TES is an action adventure series. Though GTA sort of lacks on the mechanics and flexibility most other RPGs have. I don't think they have completely different goals in mind. I think they are catering to similar audiences. I liked GTAIV but not V, I liked Oblivion but not Skyrim (V).
