Comparison of New Screenshots

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 4:45 am

It's easy to say that the graphics could've been better, they could've included DirectX11-effects etc. but when you put the two games beside each other... Oblivion suddenly looks laughably ugly.

Heck yes, there's a gigantic difference. Skyrim looks very nice. :)

Framed in the context of how he asked the question I voted no. If he had simply asked does it look better, I would have said yes. What he asked though was "is it a major leap", which no, it isn't. They fixed up their distant LOD textures, made better looking skin textures, and better looking head meshes. Aside from that though it really isn't all that different, at least what you can see from a couple of screenshots. Many of the ground textures, the grass, the hair don't look any different at all from Oblivion honestly. Lighting is kinda hard to judge from screenshots, and they certainly aren't using more advanced DX10/11 features since they want everything scaled down to the Xbox level graphics.

Do you want me to say it looks good? Sure, I'll say that, Skyrim does look pretty good, but I can't agree that it is a major leap.

Let me guess, Crysis 2/TW2 pro elitist who thinks Skyrim should look like those games?

Not much sense in making a game look amazing on the pc when it will only be overshadowed by a mod later anyway. If people love Skyrim just as much or more than Morrowind, they'll spend the time to mod it to high heaven. More will get done spending time building the world and fitting more in it, rather than making less of what could have been look pretty.

Next Gen games may look better than Skyrim whenever the next gen systems come out, infact I'll promiss that they will. But they will also be underutilized, and not what they could have been had those games waited till developers had worked with the system before. I mean, do we really want devs guessing at system specs again? Oblivion was good, one of if not my favorate TES game, but it would have been a thousand times better if it had come at the middle or end of the console cycle, rather than the beginning. It comes down to prefference though. Young and pretty, or experienced with a wrinkle or two.

The huge improvement with Oblivion terrains is the LOD. That always pisses me off when I try to play Oblivion.

Character comparisons

This link just blew my mind. I knew everything looked significantly better, but I hadn't seen a comparison that was this clear and obvious. I just got a bit more excited.

Yeah, that's true. But this will be the last Elder Scrolls on this console-cycle, the Elder Scrolls VI will definetly be on the next Playstation and Xbox. Allowing much better graphics.

So another 4-5 year wait for the possibility of TES 6.

http://www.t3.com/news/xbox-720-set-to-launch-at-the-e3-expo-in-june-2015?=46467

And from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-box_360

With the announcement of the Xbox 360 S, Microsoft have said that they believe that the console is only mid-way through its life-cycle and will continue through 2015.

With the X-box being the lead platform other platforms will have to wait for the 720 for TES6, and probably 6-12 months after the new consoles release. So sometime in early to mid 2016 then at the earliest.

The level of detailing has been vastly improved, the textures have been vastly improved, the ambiance of the areas has been vastly improved & everything looks sharper.

I don't see as there is a comparison, other than "look at this.. this is the next step!".

Smaller linear games will always have better graphics. The sheer size of Skyrim would bottleneck the best of PC's if it has Cysis 2 graphics.

I wouldnt say they are fantastic and amazing, they are about on par with a lot of other 2011 games. Beaten by a few DX11 games obviously but as I said, Skyrim is far from cutting edge.

Also, why do we need to name another 2011 rpg game similar to Skyrim? First you defend the visuals and then you give a question that implies the amount of content excuses the visuals.

And have you seen the demo in person? Which company do you work for, not saying you arn't just curious for another perspective? This is my point, the previews I have seen and I have read alot, not one has mentioned that the graphics are the same as Oblivion, OR given examples to what looks better, or that the graphics are below par or average for a 2011 game!

In regards to the rpg element, I was talking about in perspective for the style of game it is, I never said from the screenshots that Skyrim was the best looking game ever, or that it was superior graphically to even Crysis or Crysis 2, however they are completely different games. This is the point I am making, no other company does graphics like Bethesda do in their open world RPG genre! Anyone can make a really pretty linear railline game, Killzone 3 is a good example of this, looks fantastic but you are not free to run around doing what you want when you want or exploring a large area.

Honestly, Skyrim destroys Oblivion graphics-wise. Can you imagine what maxed out PC Skyrim graphics with mods will look like?

I still think people should compare skyrim's people to fallouts people, not oblivions.

Let me just find a Khajiit on Fallout 3... Oh wait.lol

But all seriousness perhaps.. It would be a better head shape to compare, but Fallout 3 used the same system to Oblivion just heads had better textures, and I think Bethesda got better at making heads in it.

What on earth do you call bad news? It's obviously not new to anyone who shares your opinion... which I do not:

1. These are Xbox screenshots; Also, the game isn't done yet

2. I'm pretty sure shadows will be better than in Oblivion... How do you assert things like shadows are similar to another game by screenshots?

3. Land design is not bad at all... and worse than what? Oblivion? You shouldn't mystify yourself :spotted owl:

4. Who told you this is a forest? And how do you know there aren't going to be "normal forests" in Skyrim?

I just hope there won't be any stuttering issues again. I can't bring myself to play fallout :P

You honestly believe these screenshots show now improvement over Oblivion?

Perhaps it's a good thing you're just a game player rather than creator.

Also, why are people saying there's no shadows??

I came across this a minute ago on youtube.

The shadows look great! Infact, Skyrim looks amazing compared to Oblivion.

I can't understand the majority of this thread.
