Compass or no Compass: that is the question!

Post » Fri Aug 27, 2010 6:53 pm

Hello, here is a poll about a very criticised aspect of Oblivion: the compass and the arrows

Edit: I meant talking about the red/green arrows of course that are on the map and on the compass. I changed the poll so delete your previous votes if you want to change your vote!

-Please vote 1, if you want no arrows that tell you where to go at all, like in Morrowind.

-Vote 2 if you want a compass that you could buy in a shop for instance or that you can activate/de-activate in the menu. Bethesda should howver manage that playing without compass is possible. Quest should give enough infomation about where are the quest's donjons, etc. Like "go left after the dark rock, follow the road and the dungeon will be on the rigt after the tall tree..."
If it bores you, you can buy a compass in a shop or activate it in the menu. Two kind of compass could be bought/activated in the menu: with or without arrows!
I don' know what other option could Bethesda take to propose it in option. (I prefer the first one personnaly: more immersive)

-Vote 3, if the compass and the arrows on it and on the map didn't destroy all the fun for you in Oblivion! You WANT them

Good vote

The compass wasn't really my issue.

My issue was the 'Green Pointy Arrow of Doom' :shakehead:

As long as there are no repeates of the Leyawiin Reccomendation quest, I don't mind the option to have it. But if you are given a riddle about the name of a place I don't want the compass to immediately point me to where that place is on the map, whether it's an option or not.

I pick vote 4: a real, actual compass that points north, not were you should go.

From what I've heard there is no HUD, so if there is a compass you'd have to go into the UI to use it.

HUD is toggleable. And that could just be for sceenshots.

Same. The arrow for quests or whatever. I hated that. Ruins exploring completely.

I also disliked the icons for nearby buildings or dungeons. Ruined exploring completely as well.

Yeah I know that you can hide HUD but if you want to see your life or mana?

A only compass option should be there and Bethesda should assure that we can play without it.

Don't want to hide HUD; not see my life/mana and be ****** in a quest because the PNJ told me: "I put it on your map" and be forced to use the compass/map.

By the way, I think that the map should not be revealed for the first time, see my idea on the "Fats travel and transportation system" on page 7

Yes to compass, no to quest markers, as others have said. :)

I think without a compass the game is more interesting.

But I have no problem with a compass, if I can turn it off.

Exactly. The compass itself is just a visualisation of how well oriented is your character about his/her surroundings. The arrows and icons on it (especially those showing stuf you haven't found yet) are the real immersion-spoilers.

I think it should be optional. Thankfully it's already been stated that you can play without any HUD whatsoever.

As long as beth give you enough info in the quest log to find the location then yes i'd be happier without the compass. I wouldn't want to do away with it completely though as i don't see any reason to deny people who want it their fun.

like someone said earlier in some other thread: compasses should be items that you obtain from quest or by buying it in a shop or something. and they should definitely NOT tell you whenever a camp/cave/whatever is nearby. that ruins exploraton totally

Even at Oblivion, some quests didn't had the green arrow.
I think it was a quest aquired at Castle Bruma, where you have to find landmarks to guide you to a cave where once a legendary man went and never came back.
Well this quest was very immersive and memorable, but I think that if there is no waypoint arrow that it will just make us having to spend too much time to travel anywhere.Pausing the action to take a look on the map every now and then might be boring some times.

Dont care about the compass, but i hope there are no quest markers or icons for undiscovered locations appearing on it.

I've actually been playing quite a bit of Minecraft lately, and using the sun and landmarks as your only means of orientation is really awesome. Do away with the quest marker though and I wouldn't mind its inclusion one bit.

My preference would be a map as good as Oblivions (which I'm fairly certain it will have) and a sort of 'you are here' type thing on the map so you know which way to head to your next quest. Whether I want it or not though I think they'll keep it the same as Oblivion and Fallout with a plot marker on your destination. They've changed their audience somewhat now to appeal to more casual gamers who don't really want to search for a long time for their next quest.
