Compass markers, your opinions?

Post » Fri Nov 18, 2011 3:32 pm

I've seen many people on this forum saying that how they didn't like that the compass shows the nearby buildings/caves/ect. icons and they often disable it as well...

Am i the only one who likes this? For me it doesn't make it less interesting to explore, the markers just give me a little insight to know that i'm going towards something... It might feel like it makes exploring much easier, but imagining to play without it would make it so much harder... You can't really take out that there is something most of the time in the forests or on rocky parts just by the looks...

Still, i'm thinking about disabling these markers, but i'm not sure...

Edit: I already disabled the enemy markers on the compass, that's better this way.

I turned the compass off. It is MUCH better this way, when I stumble across something I actually stumble across it, not walk near it and have something popping up to show me there is something there.

some think it's the equivalent of hand holding. here...come over here. look, a cool dungeon. or hey! over here! this is where you go to finish your quest! makes the game a bit too easy. more fun to explore and find the places by yourself. that's just my opinion though, others like it a bit easier.

I dno
I really liked how in morrowind they would give a physical description of how to get to your destination
somewhere northeast of that place or follow this road untill you see ...
added to the adventure

but they took those out
and with all the mountains and [censored] i sometimes have trouble enough finding the damn place as is XD
so I'm kind of glad it's in there
have to admit I even bought the clairvoyence spell cuz I couldn't find an objective for the life of me (following the compass didn't work had to take a long route around)

It's better than Oblivion's in that it's all grey. It doesn't pop out at you; you have to look at it to see what it's telling you.

Same, for this reason.

But if you don't use the compass at all, then you'll probably just miss many places. You can't find many things just by looking around... they are often hidden more.

Overall, I like it.

I think the compass icon detection radius should be reduced a bit.

I think it's necessary with the detailed terrain in this game.

I like it. I don't want to check every centimeter of this huge land to find an interesting dungeon (as realistic as it would be, it would be [censored] annoying and I would miss more than half of the great dungeons in the game).

As far as quests go, it is turned off of course.

Hmm... I also have them turned on for quests... It definitely makes things too easy sometimes when it points to the exact location to an item... I'll try it out tomorrow without the quest marks, maybe it won't be that annoying.. :)

Yes, I personally will turn the compass off for this reason but I hate how its shaped and would probably turn it off anyway.

Remember kids, blindly walking around without any direction is the epitome of fun

Fo Sho (not joking)

I'll keep it activated with no markers on it. It would make sense for the character to carry a compass irl anyway.

One of the first things I did was turn the compass off. It really makes a huge difference.

Play without the compass, and without fast-travel... otherwise you're not fully experiencing what the game has to offer.

I absolutely love the new compass markers. ObLivion had so few markers that you always knew what you were going to find. The new markers in Skyrim keeps everything fresh.

I don't use fast travel, but giving up the compass would be hard..

I play without compass (and being on xbox this means a piece of paper covering the top of my tv screen) and it's easy to get used to, especially if you do it from the start. (and I don't use floating quest markers, fast travel or map either). You quickly learn to memorize your surroundings, and carefully listen to npc directions. Any quest without spoken or written directions will have to wait untill I stumble across the designated area by accident. I really enjoy it :)

Very first thing I did was disable the compass, arrows & quest markers. Never had 'em, don't miss 'em :)

It makes you observe your surroundings more. You'd be surprised at how many little subtle paths you can see when you're looking out for them...
