Is Compensation Needed?

Post » Thu Jul 29, 2010 10:36 pm

No, I don't think compensation is needed.
None of us understand how much skill, hard work and technical trickery goes into making a simple video game, let alone one as complex as this so I think we have to understand that sometimes things just go wrong.
They have said a patch is in the works and some have already been released so they are actively doing someting to resolve it.
Now let's look at an example of how not to handle it!
I bought Ego Draconis earlier this year and that game has as many, if not more, glitches than NV but did they release patches to resolve it? No.
Instead they are releasing an updated "Flames of Vengeance" edition with an addon, new engine, and all issue spatched.
So here we are, having paid £45 for a game that has been re-released again for full price but with issues resolved.
That is how not to handle these situations!
So I for one applaud Bethesda for taking on board people's complaints and starting work to resolve them.

My good sir
Everyone understands that a lot of hard work and effort and skill goes into any high tech devices or systems or games now a days. These people go to school for years and work hard to beat out the competition for highly coveted jobs.
It seems though you may miss the point that any company is held to a standard that when they put a product out it is under a reasonable expectation that it will perform as intended. If apple put out an Ipad that didnt turn on would you be waiting for a patch or repair. If someone buys a car with part of the engine missing and couldnt run for more then a few minutes are they going to wait around for a patch/repair to fix it ....especially if the company was not upfront about the problems involved with their product.
Do things go wrong as you state ... of course they do its expected but when so many problems arise and they make the product unusable in the way it was intended then you have to question the so called skill and hard work you mention. We have whats called here a Quality Assurance department and I am personally apart of one, the products we test are to be run through the ringer in all manners that we can think of that might be done by the consumers. Do we miss some things .... of course we do but the amount of things we miss that are game killing for the consumer are next to none I think since I have been around we missed one. This is a classic case of poor development and extremely poor or no testing if this had been the company I work for we would all be out of a job for this many mistakes. The company should make right with this obvious lack of quality not just with a patch to make the product work as intended but something special for the consumer outside of monetary comp. I simple small addition to the game like a weapon or perk or one new quest or something neat to use in game would go a long way to mending the bad blood thats been building. Hold the company accountable and definitly fire their QA dept. They failed miserably on this.

Well I agree that they have failed to supply a perfect product, which we as consumers have every right to expect.
Then again, the manual contains return information for ZeniMax (the publisher) if a buyer is unhappy with the product so they have offered every recourse for unhappy punters to have a refund.
Beyond this, no-one is culpable for the issues with software which is something that needs to be changed as it will, in the long run, improve the medium for both buyers and developers.
But my main point is that I don't feel the need to ask for freebies whenever something I buy becomes faulty. I expect the item to be fixed within a reasonable amount of time or a refund be offered but a freebie? No. If I did, I would have a home full of free stuff.

From the manual:
"ZeniMax Europe Limited guarantees to the original purchaser of this computer software product that the disk/cartridge supplied with this product shall not show any fault during the first 90 days from the date of receipt of ownership. In the first instance please return the faulty product to the point of purchase, along with any proof of purchase. If for any reason this is not possible then please return the product to ZeniMax Europe Limited at the address below along with any proof of purchase, location of purchase, a statement describing the fault and any original packaging you may have. ZeniMax Europe Limited will reimburse the postage costs of returning any faulty products. This warrenty is in addition to and does not affect your existing statutory rights regarding the product and your statutory rights are in no way restricted or affected by this warranty. If you require further advice regarding your statutory rights then please contact your local consumer affairs office or a lawyer."

Things can go wrong, thats fine by me, but they can go wrong BEFORE they charge people retail prices for it.

You make a few assumptions here, but we will skip them in light of the Ego Draconis statement. The way that was handled was horrendous. It does not however make what Bethesda did any better. On a rather funny sidenote, Ego Draconis has the same game engine (Gamebryo) as Fallout 3/New Vegas. Software companies nowadays have gotten sloppy and the reason for this is partially us. We have allowed companies to kick out whatever incomplete (kotor 2 anyone?) games they want to put out and still we shell out whenever a new release hits the shelves. You want to know the real reason compensation won't be done? Because as soon as the bugs are fixed, these forums will be a ghost town with the consumers sated and happy again. They know this, so they take whatever time they want/need to knowing as soon as they are done, the masses will shut up and they can start the entire process all over again. We need to make it right again and the only way of doing that is with our/their money. The consumers nowadays are sheeple with their money though, so the trend continues. Zenimax btw is Bethesda or rather, Bethesda is a trademark owned by the Zenimax Media Inc.

so then answer me this: how is it that OTHER companies are able to release their Modern Warfares, their Halo's, their Gears of War, and a [censored] load of other high end games, that have little to no problems in ANY WAY WHATSOEVER! yet with Bethesda, this is nothing more than a long list of games they have released that have suffered from severe game breaking bugs and glitches. Oblivion, Fallout3, Fallout 3 G.O.T.Y., and now New Vegas. i understand and respect the point you are trying to make, but at the same time, maybe if Bethesda had a better quality control department, as well as ditching what is obviously and overused and obsolete game engine, things like this would never need to happen. we DO deserve better than what Bethesda has given us so far.

I doubt this has been brought up, so I didn't bother reading through all the posts, so sorry if it has. But I am curious if anyone remembers when XBL had crashed right around Christmas a few years back. I believe it was the year Halo 3 had come out. Anyway, it was down for about 2 weeks and after they had fixed whatever the problem was, Microsoft offered a free arcade game to everyone. Granted, that problem affected all or most the people with XBL and this game's bugs affects the minority of users (I think), so I don't think getting something in return is that out of the question. Now I'm not asking for the DLC for free, maybe slightly discounted, or a simple New Vegas theme pack would do. Just something to show they're at least trying to make up for it. It's the thought that counts.

I would love some new items in game. Good games are rare, much less games i play for 200 hours. But I think regardless of the bugs, the corrupted files, the graphics card issues, the false advertising (you can't kill every NPC but one) and other inconsistencies, the game feels like it's lacking item content. Not a lot in the way of new guns (which is a MUST in a shooter sequel) since FO3. In fact the only significant addition is the C-finder which is a major let down. I think Beth should release an additional weapon pack as a good will gesture. Maybe actually include some working schematics for a unique weapon. I think this is a great (an pretty standard) way of thanking us.

Look I hate seeing all [censored] saying bah bah all game come with bugs and so forth and deal with it!! Who gives a woot! I know all games have bugs, and I do know you should not release a game thats not fully tested like FONV, period. And yes I'm really devoted fan aswell I voted yes, I do believe we should get at least 1 FREE DLC from them for the problems it has.

Rock Star Games I know at least giving 2 FREE DLC for Red Dead Redemption for all the bugs it had in that game. So yeah, Obsidian or Bethesda could give us little compensation for all the problems!!!

My copy of NV won't even read at all, i've tried dif' xboxs and installing to no avail... i don't know if others have run into this problem or if i'm just really unlucky. I wouldn't want to be comp'd as long as i could send in my broken copy and get a working copy. if i had a working copy i would think that a small dlc with a few goodies would go a long way in restoring some fanfaith in new vegas

Yes!!!! A Thousand Times YES!!!

Look, when you get poor service or a shoddy product you deserve compensation. Period. When I forked over my cash, it was with the understanding that I was buying a complete product. It has become quite obvious that Fall Out New Vegas is not complete. But I'm supposed to accept all the bugs and the freezing as part of the process? No way! If you went to a restaurant and they served you a plate of food that was only half cooked would you still eat it? If you payed a contractor to build you a house would you let him walk away after only completing half of it? Would you let your grocery store charge you for a case of beer when you only picked up a six-pack?

When businesses screw up in the "real world" they 1) fix the mistake and 2) compensate the customer for the ADDED inconvenience that was NOT intended to be part of the original transaction. Maybe you get a 15% off coupon for your next purchase at a restaurant or maybe it's totally comped. In general the level of compensation should meet or exceed the level of frustration and annoyance experienced by the customer.

I want the new DLC for free. Period. I bought the game and a month has gone buy without it being whole. The least Bethesda can do is comp my dessert.

Actually, what really happens is that the government covers their asses with huge investments of our tax money, and we get taxed more to pay for it.

Be grateful this has not caught on in the videogames industry.

LMFAO!! At the people trying to say this has only happened to a small amount of people...Nearly every single person I know who has played NV has had issues that have COMPLETELY prevented them from continuing the game let alone problems that have made playing the game incredibly frustrating...I myself got the corrupted autosave bug today...thank god I was able to load an old save....Between the freezes...the randomly 10x longer than normal loading screens...the CONSTANT followers attacking friendlies...the followers Passive option being an absolute joke...I have literally pulled my hair out...It amazes me why they even bothered with the follower wheel...I was so excited for the passive option...only to see that it DOES NOT WORK...my followers still attack anyone and everyone they see...making it as annoying as it was in F3...I love having followers but I DESPISE having to baby sit them when they charge head on into an enemy who can 1-2 shot them to death.

When has a game EVER had this many issues before? I am a major fan of Fallout..but the fact is I bougt this game from Bethesda expecting it to be a complete game and its far from it...I cant imagine they even had 10 people test thing game for them....surely at least half of them would of gotten the corrupt save thing...I know they wont give us anything for this...heck they even have the NERVE to spin their wheels on this patch...its been nearly a month since this patch announcement and there isnt even a date!!!! we certantly wont be given anything for our trouble and we should.

I would like to see the heads of both Bethesda and Obsidian finally offer a formal public apology for this absolute bugfest of an untested beta release. I don't see this as compensation, rather it is something that all their customers are owed. When they have paid off that bill we can start talking compensation.

Because those are extremely linear games with very little going on in the background.

I have stated before that i do not expect the companies involved to even acknowledge a problem.
The whole thing will be swept under the carpet.
My reasoning is this,if they acknowledge that the game is fundamentally flawed/broken/unfinished, call it what you will, then they are admitting liability, which by admission, leaves them open to legal action, either by the consumer or by the trading standards people.
It is more likely that they will admit that it was a 'minor' issue with a minority of customers and the problem has/will be fixed in a patch.
Ranks will close, DLC will be announced and more customers will be duped.

I created this poll simply to see where the majority of fallout fans stand on the issue of compensation due to the myriad number of bugs contained in the game from day 1.
I myself am a fallout fan and am not trying to flame anyone, i am just curious as to what people think. If you do feel compensation is necessary, post and let us know what would be sufficient to make up for the frustrating experince.
I realize gamers who have had no problems with the game will probably not be as frustrated as those who have experienced the dlc bug and the like. I am also realistic, and do realize that this poll will probably have no effect on bethesda/obsidians decision to charge 800 ms points for dead money which releases dec. 21.
Any input is appreciated, thanks

I dont think compensation is needed, just some more patches. I love the game, but it seems rushed and has a lot of glitches. I also played fallout 3 on 360, and although many reported problems, I had less than I have had with NV. I like NV more probably, and havent experienced many glitches, but one where a quest doesnt update or complete is kinda wack.

I've thought about this for awhile...

I don't think we NEED compensation. Some PC games are infinitely more buggy than NV, and yet consumers receive nothing in return. With Vegas, I'd be happy if Bethesda/Obsidian putout an official apology to all owners of Vegas recognizing their mistakes, because some of these bugs really are unacceptable. I don't see how so many glitches could go unnoticed. That being said, NV is a wonderful game. I'm a little miffed that I can't continue the game until the patch comes out, but if I have to wait a bit so that all of the big issues can be cleared up, fine, I'll wait.

If some free weapons were to be given out, or perhaps a discount on the DLC, hey, that'd be great. But I'll be perfectly content so long as someone releases an official apology, promises to not let such a thing happen again, and continues to support the community. I mean, at least these guys are working hard to fix the problems. Other studious could've blown off the consumers entirely and left us all with broken products.

I agree with this. I don't think we need to be compensated. Games have bugs, and a relatively small amount of people are experiencing them. They're working on patches. I don't think that all of these bugs could have been anticipated. IMO, it's a moot point to even discuss compensation, as it's most likely not going to happen.

No ,what should of happened is the game was delayed till all the bugs were addressed....and they can't say they didn't know the bugs existed at the time of relase because they did....and as far as being compensated, yeah, we should get some DLC or something for free for all the crap this has caused .

You cant lump PC in with the rest of consoles my friend. We dont have the luxury of incremental updates. Or outside peoples modes and work arounds. Bethesda and obsidian need to get it together and fix this problem and give a little something to the players who have waited OH so long on this. Its getting ridiculous Im starting to think that the reason its taking so long is because they cant fix all the game killing bugs. To those who payed 60 dollars for a drink coaster and it may stay that way forever I hope you rally for justice. This can not go unpunished.

My suggestion is simple. And Beth wont have to lose any money on giving away Free DLC. Give us perks at every level up and a couple new perks, and i would gladly forgive and forget this.
Anyone remember what the the DLC "The Pitt" did to those who bought it on release day? This is the best bribe i can think of. Who's with me?

You are absolutely right, they will never ever admit liability. It even seems to me like the correspondence/updates from Bethesda/Obsidian are trying to downplay any issues with F:NV.

In a completely unrelated matter, it's my opinion that anyone that knows they are in the wrong but refuses to admit it is a coward. Just my 2 cents.

I know that there are still some people out there that believe, people experiencing the bugs/glitches are in the minority. Which maybe still true, but it's big enough for the local "Video Games Weekly" radio show here in Minneapolis to discuss it on air. Here is a tweet I received from the shows host, Paul Charchian, when asked by me, if he's talked about FO:NV problems on his show yet.

@PaulCharchian
Paul Charchian
@D_XXXXX We've mentioned the bugs a few times. It's been a borderline disaster. It's kept me from playing it.
