ES: No competing products

Post » Sun Aug 01, 2010 11:20 pm

Actually, you guy's are going to hate me for saying this but I'm honest. World of Warcraft has AMAZING lore...most people just don't bother to read through the quests text and get to the end game quest content...it's pretty special and the amount there is generally good reading later on.

Anyway, he's right...The Elder Scrolls series is very unique in the gaming world, Open World games aren't new but Elder Scrolls has basically defined the genre time and time again with each new iteration. Infact, RPG's in General don't really compete with each other since we like most of what they put out. I believe the ES arena may have been the first fully open game world.

I prefer 3rd person fantasy games. Cause you can see the awesome moves your character does. Two Worlds did this great and Two Worlds 2 has to.

Go check out both Two Worlds games, the gothic series (Not Arcania), Risen, Divinity 2, etc. All great games.

Dark Messiah did a pretty good job of looking like Oblivion, But I hated the linear story.

It is kind of similar, but combat gets annoying, linear story is bad, voice acting is bad. Player HAVING a voice is bad. The world even though its so linear is horribly bland.

<- not a fan, but I did give it a try. Would be nice to see more open world fantasy first person games... Wait what am i saying, I only need one, and its name is TES:V.

Well I guess we could resurrect the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wizardry series. Tons of lore and was probably an influence to the developers of ES.

to me the elder scrolls are like lord of the rings, series like these are few and far between, and the ones that to appear are labeled as knockoffs, which is why im guessing developers are skeptical about producing a game like this, besides im fine with just having the ES i dont really feel the need to have another game like these

STALKER is probably the closest thing you'll find, and it's an FPS.

We are the competition. Modders offed the only real competition to ES. Check out Nehrim. It is... in my opinion, as good if not better than Oblivion.

If Rockstar made a open-world fantasy RPG, my bet would be on it being pretty awesome.

So long as they changed the mission system, so you don't have to do them all in strict order, with no save points, and go right back to before the mission started if you fail at any point!
And made it first-person, as I'm not a fan of GTA's clunky 3rd person handling.

You really can't call that competition. You need to have Oblivion to play Nehrim, because it's a mod. If Nehrim was a standalone game, then it might be a competitor.

^This^
STALKER really gets me immersed, more than OB actually. I feel a bit cold and depressed while running around the environments in the cold rain. I prefer playing with mods that make it more difficult even though the game doesn't exactly hold your hand. Really makes it's open world feel more deadly.

I think devs avoid is because it's a lot of work, a lot of time and money invested in something that could flop. Bethesda have a pretty sweet deal going on since everybody knows they can create some pretty interesting worlds to explore, where you're always find something new. They have a good reputation.

I'd love to see more varied games with a first-person perspective like what The Elder Scrolls does as well as other series like Thief (first-person sneaking).
I too have played and finished Dark Messiah about 5 times because the gameplay was incredibly fun with it's use of melee and magic in a first person perspective.
To me, a first-person view adds a lot of immersion and improved atmosphere as well as making exploration and interaction more fun since you can see things up close and notice the details of the game.
Funny how STALKER has been mentioned here as that is one of my favourite game series and those games overflow with atmosphere and is set in such an unique environment that effectively compliments it's use of a first-person perspective.

Yeah competition's not the right word, but mods really are the only option. Unfortunately, the group that did Nehrim is the only one to have actually completed a total conversion. You get the graphics and physics of Oblivion, but with better quests and leveling. Add to that new creatures and lore and it really acts as a stand apart game. Those who haven't checked it out really should.

Arx Fatalis was an awesome game when it came out. After playing Morrowind I was looking for something along the same lines and picked up Arx on a whim, instantly loved it.

I don't think there are any competing products because most game studios are moving away from single player games and pushing out stuff more focused on multiplayer. The problem is most of these games are shooters and even the ones that are not are pretty much beatable in 6-10 hours of game play.
Video games are a business, while I'm sure most people want to make a fun game bottom line is they have to make money on it so they just want to push out a game on a particular marketing schedule and they think multiplayer is what will pull in more players to buying the title than quality content.

I love the Elder Scrolls and I'm glad Bethesda is one of the few studios that can make an awesome single player game. They got a lot to be proud of even if other studios tried they couldn't put out a game half as good.
Although there are quite a few bugs to work out from time to time that must be hard for game testers to find since the ES series are usually very intricate.

The X series is also first person and "open world" although it's more open-space simulator. Pretty much a create your own empire/live your life/whatever you want to do sort of thing. Very entertaining, and difficult.

Speaking of open world fantasy games...I really wish The White Council would have come to fruition.

I played X3 (a sandbox universe first-person spaceship combat/economic sim) for a while, but got bored with it. On the good side, it's got a decent background story to the universe about previous wars between the various races, and against an AI fleet and ongoing pirate raids, with an "evolution" of ship designs and such. You can take combat missions or make trade runs, and the game will adjust the difficulty of the combat and economics seperately as you advance, which keeps it playable as either or both. There's even a small but active mod community. On the negative side, the controls and commands are really non-intuitive (although amazingly "deep"), the mission "spawns" start to get too repetitive after a while (levelled and scaled somewhat like OB), and it takes on a much lonelier feel than TES after a while - you never get out of your ship (other than bailing out in your spacesuit to do repairs) to interact with another sentient being, even in the trading stations.

As for anything in the TES genre, I haven't seen anything even close. There were a few things back in the DOS days, all "tile based" graphics or pure text games, but not in the same league and not playable by today's customers who expect far more accessability and polish.

Only problem with Oblivion and also Morrowind in 3rd person is that the head is in front of the crosshair, this makes it hopeless to target at range or pick up smaller items. Simply moving the crosshair up so it’s around a feet over the head and it would work nice, that is the way everybody else do it, can not understand why they didn’t did it already in Morrowind.

First person are still better then sniping or picking up small items as you get closer.

large open world games require a significant amount of resources to pull off so they're riskier financially. They're also hard to pull off without a large team which further limits who can practically consider them.

The number of games that feature large open worlds has certainly been increasing but they're generally in other settings - probably mostly due to developer interest but it wouldn't surprise me if some studios want to steer clear of being labeled and Oblivion-clone.

I haven't gotten around to it myself but I know a fair number of people on the forum enjoyed Mount&Blade. It's not strictly a fantasy setting from my understanding (no magic or goblins or what not) although I'm pretty sure it isn't a historical medieval setting either.

I own Mount and Blade Warband I will explain a bit about it. There are Six nations. The Veigers are basicly Medieval Russians. The Swadians are basically the average European nation. Also the Nords are Vikings. The Rohdocks are kinda Scottish. Also the other nations are the Saranid Sultinate which are basically a Muslim nation the Kherjit Khanate are basically Mongolians. I go off my definitions off off the the land and thier troops. The game has directional combat which feels natural. It has diverse weapons and horse combat. The multiplayer content is free it is $30 on Tale Worlds the regular site.

Also it has no fantisy elements at all and it is in a made up world yes with real medieval politics too wich makes it interesting.

Swadians are a bit of a mashup between the French, the English and the Teutonic Order. Rhodoks are more similar to the the Italians or Spanish. Don't think they have a Scottish vibe, to be honest.

I really recommend Warband: http://mountandblade.wikia.com/wiki/Mount%26Blade:_Warband

From the Warband wiki: "the Kingdom of Rhodoks resembles the various Germanic Italian, and possibly Spanish principalities and city states during the Middle Ages and is ruled by King Graveth."

I suggest to end this here, we're driving the thread off-topic.

No. I haven't noticed. Two Worlds isn't 1st person. Neither is Dragon Age nor Witcher.

Two world is close enough as it's one character and real time, I tried it and found it a cheap gothic clone, yes I was expecting to much, played Oblivion the day before I installed it and returned pretty fast, environment was great, combat was good, quests was pretty boring and generic, the rest was mostly bad, cities and villages was bad and uninspiring, Mount and blade has far better. NPC: found the ones in Morrowind was far more realistic and nice looking.

Dragon age is good, however it's a party based AD&D game with turn based combat, totally different genre.
