Competitive Crysis 2 [eSports]

Post » Thu Dec 31, 2009 4:32 am

If you are only interested in playing Crysis 2 as a casual game then this thread isn't for you!

Before I start, this thread will be about Crysis 2 as a competitive esports game, for those who do not know what esports is, read my brief explanation below.

Gamers are getting more sophisticated, and more dedicated to gaming than ever. They represent the single most powerful new source of entertainment revenue in the world, even overtaking music and movies. Gaming is becoming the largest sport of all and gamers are pioneers for all the non-gaming people, when it comes to PC accessories.
Electronic Sports is the term used to describe computer and video games which are played as competitive sports. It is also known variously as E-Sports, gaming, cybersports and cyber athletics. Whatever term is used, though, one thing which is beyond dispute is that E-Sports is the fastest-growing leisure activity in the world and looks set to become an established global professional sport in future years. Already E-Sports has been granted “Official Sport” status in a number of Asian
countries including China and South Korea.
Over the last decade, competitive and professional gaming has become the world?s fastest-growing spectator sport with up to 100,000 watching tournaments in arenas and millions of spectators following the games online. When put into perspective, the online game market clearly is just getting started.
E-sports has significant backing from global blue-chip corporates like Samsung, Intel, Dell and AMD, and approximately 500 professional teams.
The leading teams have huge fan bases and are used by sponsors to endorse and promote products. This year, over $12,000,000 will be given away in prize money at tournaments, many of which Animus Gaming will be attending.

Example ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dA1Qcu7GZqo - finals of the Intel Extreme Masters )

Also an explanation of what a LAN party is, for those who don't know :

A LAN party is a gathering in which gamers (devotees of computer games) gather to share a local area network (LAN) and participate in extended gaming sessions of popular games such as Quake, Doom, or Wolfenstein. On a LAN, response time among players is much faster than the same interaction over the Internet, changing the quality of the game. In addition, gamers have the opportunity to meet other participants in the flesh. LAN parties range in size from a few players getting together in a private home to gatherings of over a thousand players converging to participate in a large public event. Large LAN parties often attract corporate sponsorship from hardware and software vendors.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, so esports is mainly in games at the moment such as Counter-Strike:Source and 1.6, CoD4, Starcraft2, Quake Live etc etc. Crysis was on its way but no major backing at all for tournaments / LAN parties made it difficult to gain motivation to play the game on a high level (is what happened to myself).
What I am trying to propose is that Crytek (or if they allow some modding communities) create a "Promod" for Crysis 2, in order to atleast give the game a chance of becoming competitive.

Promod is already existing in the CoD4 world, which is slightly similar to Crysis 2. (Promod basically dissalows alot of the things which you aren't necessarily able to do using the console). I am 100% sure it would be a hit and encourage a lot more people to play on a competitive level, at the same time, gaining a substantial amount of exposure for the game itself on a worldwide level. It wouldnt take too long to fully create, but I can guarantee it will benefit both parties in the long term.

So what I am asking is that if anyone is interested in pushing this further...people from the community? Crytek themselves? To get in contact with me and some other people I know who have come from the competitive gaming background and know what it takes/what features need to be implemented in order to make a Promod for the game.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why me?

I know a lot of questions will be in regards to why should I be the "ringleader" of this.
I have played competitive games for over 6 years, all of them being FPS games.
I am the captain of a team playing for a major UK gaming organisation (http://www.team-yoyotech.co.uk) which is attending the very first LAN event in the world for Crysis 2 this month and will be one of the high seeds to finish in the top3.
I am working with worldwide leagues and esports companies to try and get Crysis 2 some ladders and prized tournaments available to the community, which so far is going well with many of them announcing some cash tournaments in a few months after the patches are up (I'll keep you posted for this).

At the end of the day im trying to do a good thing for the Crysis 2 community, so I hope you understand that and don't flame and if you have something useful (constructive criticism/ideas for the promod or in general/questions) then comment below.

Thanks.

If anyone wants to get in contact with me, please send me a p/m.

Let's talk about esport when the game is fixed, weapons balanced/added more recoil (PC Crysis 2 really NEEDS more recoil) and so on.

If for one think Crysis 2 MP could really become a real competitive game.
Promod is not even really necessary i think.

Give this game some more time. :)

Oh hey its Yoyotech, ill be facing you guys again at i42

should be fun, but seriously, promodding something is admitting you want 1.6 back let it go <3

WHilst i agree promod will help, there are too many current issues that need to be dealt with before promod can even be considered I would love it if crysis2 went pro, I spent 6 years in Shadows e-Sports cs1.6 but hey, who knows.

The only thing i would be interested in is who gets to decide what does and -does not- make the cut. since there were few promods I actually agreed with.

Oh, and one more tiny detail, Cryengine 2 was a bich to mod, there were a hell of a alot of modders that tried, but the cryengine 2 was just unfriendly as a mother.... , once given the oppertunity to mod cryengine 3 in a decent fashion I could have a go at it, or find someone willing, just warning you in advance, how much work it might take.

crysis 2 wont make it as a competitive game in its current state. the game would have to be completely redone.

yeh core i know it would take a fair while. and especially on our server we have narrowed down the commands to remove dogtags, killstreaks etc, so its looking on its way. was just a thought, can surely come back to it when the game is fully smoothed out.

wandering basically if anyone else would be interested in seeing crysis 2 becoming a competitive game at EU lans with maybe a promod implemented.
