Completely stuck with installation of mods - over 401 esps

Was using this guide and I installed my chosen mods too: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1090232-50-steps-to-stable-fcom/

Topic says it most. Also TES4Edit doesn't work (I choose all plugins, click OK, then I get "range check error"), and I'm afraid of doing any merges with TES4Gecko - most of my files are true mods, not added armour/weapons, and I know that I can't merge main files of mods (coz mod patches require original esps)... Since Bash can't select so many mods (it doesn't let me go above 401 esps), here's my mod list from OBMM, I assure you that every mod is up-to-date. Notice that about 50 of those are mergeable in Wrye Bash - yes, I know that, but I can't do that until I merge all other things!

You can't have that many ESP files in your Data folder. The game will crash. There's a hard limit of 400 ESM+ESP+BSA files. Many people run into trouble starting at 350. You're going to have no choice but to merge content or drop some mods.

Also, get rid of the UOP aging vampire fix, and use the Bashed Patch equivalent instead.

Progress.esm - You can merge Progress*.esp plugins to this esm (i.e. to master). Then espify the final esm in Wrye Bash and rename to Progress.esp

UOP Vampire Aging & Face Fix.esp - use latest Wrye Bash and select the fix in the bashed patch.
Oblivion Citadel Door Fix.esp - not really necessary.

DLCShiveringIsles.esp - Renamed USIP esp to this, hopefully?

LoadingScreens.esp
LoadingScreensSI.esp - Import graphics in the bashed patch. Deactivate.

Symphony of Violence.esp - Mergeable in the bashed patch.
MIS.esp
MIS New Sounds Optional Part.esp - These two I'm not sure if they really have to be activated...
Atmospheric Oblivion.esp - Import sounds in the bashed patch.

Storms & Sound.esp - use OBSE version, as it does not require further patches to other mods to work.

RAEVWD *.esp - These three are not really necessary... Unless you have a very high desire for the smallest of details. Standard install already lets you have VWD objects generated by TES4LODGen.

hmm. It seems you like throwing files at Oblivion\Data folder...
Did you know you should not have more than 5 (depending on your computer) active quests running? (Quests from other mods)
Keep it cool. Play one quest at a time. Then enable the next one. Add things slowly. I can't help much more, as it is starting to be repetitive - you have to learn on your own if you wish to have the maximum number of mods.

TES4Edit does not handle well that much data loaded simultaneously. It just wasn't coded for such a heavy task.

Use Auto-Ghost in Wrye Bash to ghost mods that are merged into bashed patch. Inactive plugin files are automatically ghosted and don't count towards the limit.

Common sense about merging plugins with TES4Gecko:
- have small fixes, or small additions that do not overlap each other, merged
- you can also merge quest mods that do not overlap
(be sure to not change quest plugins that are being played - merge a couple quests first then play them both at the same time next time you activate the plugin)
- if you use patches for one mod, merge them to master (like the patches for each of the dlc)
- if you have optional plugins that work independently, merge them to master (like all those Progress plugins and esm)
- watch out for the plugins associated with a BSA
(plugin names must match the BSA starting name; if the mod has voice files, either in the bsa or in the data folder, they will be broken even if you change both the plugin name and the bsa toghether)

Gonna try what Ulrim said, but you guys seem to have misunderstood my post. I posted all the plugins I wanted, not all of them I want activated, coz I haven't merged them yet.

ATM I'm following Ulrim's instructions, thanks!

Edit: one question though - you mean Progress.esm only (merge most solo plugins to this master) or merge certain plugin to THEIR masters (i.e. some DLCs to Oblivion.esm), and how can it work then if they need specific load order?

Yea, but you've got them merged. I can't select all 401 mods I want just for posting load order from Wrye, so I posted OBMM one.

Besides, OMOBS has noMerge tag and I can't even change it. I guess it'll stay like it is now, anyway, I'm on my way merging mods.

Merging DLCs and their appropiate unofficial files doesn't work... As I get DLC required it's own .esp (e.g. DLCVileLair.esp requiring DLCVileLair.esp), AND I can't delete those 'masters' - I get errors in Gecko.

You have to use the "merge to master" function instead - and then be sure to use Wrye Bash and ESPify the resulting files since Gecko will have ESMified them.

Usually, NoMerge tag indicates that a mod has content that is not supposed to be merged in its entirety (due to the way bash works).
This tag can compliment other tags, such as Stats, allowing to "filter" only the content you wish to import.

In the mentioned plugin, it can be also thought as a safeguard.
The plugin shows up in the stats window when you rebuild the bashed patch but does not show up in the mergeable mods window.
That is the intended purpose - to import stats to the merged patch.

Click Merge to Master, select "All Files" so I can choose a DLC .esp, then choose it's patch. Is that right? If so, then Gecko doesn't change them to .esm.

edit: I get it now, it's that espify self function.

Okay, so I've got everything reduced to, say, about 210 ESPs/ESMs. Now, I activated Oblivion.esm, basic FCOM (http://devnull.sweetdanger.net/fcomloadorder.html <-- THIS) and after starting game through OBSE, game crashes on 5% loading after clicking "New Game". I have no idea what it might be... Any info needed, I will provide it.

Edit: I've tried loading all mods too, and just Oblivion.esm. Neither of these ways worked. Still crash during first loading screen (after clicking New Game and accepting).

My LO is a lot smaller then yours and it was painstaking to do with no experience. Are you making sure to read all the read me files?

Have you done a base FCOM install before? Did you rebuild the bash patch after changing your LO?

For comparison since I use most of your mods.

Edit: Gotcha! Turned off all plugins, and started moving data/xfolders (menus, textures, meshes, distantlod etc. all replacers) one by one to temporary directory, each time turning on Oblivion and checking if anything changed. Here we go, after I moved Menus folder, it's loading! Now, debugging part... So far what I've had installed all-about menus: DarkUI'd DarN, Quest Log Manager 1.2, Enhanced Economy... That's all I remember. I was following guide which I linked in 1st post, and if you see any menus-modifying mod in that topic, please tell me. Coz I don't think there was anything besides DarN, QLM and Economy. But I might be wrong.

Edit2: Ah, nGCD (levelupmenu, training menu) and PersuasionOverhaul (negotiations menu). I have no idea what to do now. I need a full list of mods that modified menus so I can reinstall them in right way - yeah, just - what way? DarkUI first? If that so, it's just what I did. My install order of menu-editing mods was: DarkUI, nGCD, Persuasion Overhaul, Enhanced Economy, Quest Log Manager.

Edit3: Forgot to answer to your questions, trikko:

- Are you making sure to read all the read me files? - I'm sure I did not read every readme file completely. Yes, your eyes don't fail. Yes, I'm lazy. But installing all of this took me 4 days, about 5 hours every day. However, my skill in reading didn't fail, as proof I can say that I got throrough Duke Patrick's trick in his Combat Archery. :)

Have you done a base FCOM install before? - Yes, but I don't remember if I was doing it right. Now, I am doing it right, for sure.

Did you rebuild the bash patch after changing your LO? - Yes. Bash rocks.

It's always a good idea to install one mod at a time and play a little before installing more, that way you will immediately know which mod is creating the conflicts. Don't just install dozens of mods at once.

Fixed, just reinstalled all those mods above (nGCD, EE, DarkUI etc.).

However, I've got another problem :facepalm:

When I attack with my character with hand-to-handerz, game crashes. Just CTD. I bet some animations mod or sound mod. Whether I have all my mods activated/deactivated, it doesn't matter - it crashes.

Does the issue persist with no mods installed? You have mods that replace animation files installed, so the problem could still be mod-related. What non-plugin mods are you running, including OBSE plugins? Try uninstalling UV, and any other animation replacers you have installed.

It usually takes a very long time to build up that many mods together.
Don't hope to be playing anytime soon if you have just installed oblivion and are starting fresh.

First thing considered is installation of mods. Many people fail this. Even with simple drag and drop folders.
For this reason, many mods support OBMM and BAIN installations. With those tools, things can be quite simpler to install and remove later.

When mods don't provide support for those tools, learn to properly check contents of mods before you install them.
Then consider learning to re-pack those mods for installation with BAIN or OBMM.

After installation, the next thing you have to think about is compatibility. There are two situations that must be accounted for.

The most commonly addressed is the plugin compatibility with other mods.
Be sure to install the patches in the correct order, if there are any. There may be an incompatibility with some mod you play but the patch for it has not been created yet.
There may be heavy scripting involved that cannot be traced directly to an incompatibility with other mods. For example, a mod that deletes some thing in the game. You may start getting crashes if you load another mod after that uses the deleted content from the previous mod in a script. This is also why TES4Edit becomes indispensable in this regard, with the undelete-disable references method.

Another incompatibility arises when you are installing files themselves. From textures to worldspace heightmaps and related Landscape LOD meshes.
Files that overlap are difficult to track without proper installation tools.
Even if you use installation tools, simply disabling a mod's plugin may not remove other visible content in the game that was intended to work toghether with the plugin (like LOD meshes, for instance).

There are so many ways that things can go wrong you just can't expect to "survive" the modding game with little experience. Your own experience and what you learn from it is better than what you read somewhere else.

When I said I had over half a thousand plugins (not all used at the same time, not counting mods that don't have plugins) I am not bragging about it.

I started playing Oblivion a few months after it came out, even though I just started using the forums about a year later.
My Oblivion folder is the result of small increment and mod additions one at a time from over a period of three years.
I can say that I can solve my own issues most of the time. However, half the time I spent with oblivion was not gaming. Was playing the modding game. :gun: :dead:

Yeah, I really DON'T get how Elys Uncapper can cause this crash.

I really don't. I really, really don't get why.

Took my usual way of debug, I noticed that non-obse Oblivion wasn't crashing. So I took out OBSE plugins one by one. Turns out that the reason is Uncapper. But hey, I need it! What I'm going to do now?! I'm sure it's the newest version from Nexus, checked it. But I can't think about why powerattacks (or maybe many, many other things too) cause a simple stat cap remover to crash Oblivion. Reading Elys readme:
The only conflicting mods I can think about, are mods that have been designed to alterate or expand how the character levels up with workaround scripts to the hardcoded level 100 caps.

Do I have any such mods? No, I don't think so: nGCD replaces leveling with skill progression, Progress modifies how fast it is.

No idea. And I so desperadetly need this mod. I guess I'll need to post this problem in OBSE thread, or something like that.

You have Oblivion XP alongside nGCD and Progress - totally not compatible. I suspect that's the root of your uncapper problem.

I assume you mean you removed Oblivion XP? If so, you should be aware that, when installed, it added an xml menu file. When you uninstalled, that menu was removed, but a correct one was not put in. That can cause problems.

If you still have problems now, best thing is to post your current load order and current problems. Hard to help with out-of-date information.
