Compound bows

Post » Sat Jan 22, 2011 3:26 pm

It's been 200 years since oblivion and the technology in skyrim has to have gotten better and with a civil war breaking out the need for better weapons would be demanding so thats why I think there could be compound bows in skyrim while a compound bow may not be stronger then a regular long bow it is more pricise gives the arrow more velocity for longer shot. or if this is still to far fetched for the elder scroll games then it can be implamented as a Dwemer artifact The Dwemer themselves where a technologicly advance race who built
machines that ran for centurys on steam so a comound bow shouldn't be to far fetched sounding. is this is a good idea or a bad one .

Yeah but obviously technology doesnt advance as fast in fantasy games compared to real life. Just look at lord of the rings. The elves live for thousands of years. How come they havent made computers or cars yet?

I'm a bowhunter in real life, but compound bows just don't fit the ES world -- at least in my opinion.

Mate, they've already said it's more low-tech.

I think they should have AT LEAST made a longbow by now, instead of just the normal one.

You know, the longbow is just a stick. Sure, it's cut from the yew tree so that half of it is heartwood and the other half is hardwood, but it's still just a stick. They're not even a recurve bow.

You want something fancy? Try a composite bow. They were made from wood, horn, sinew and some other stuff that escapes me at the moment. They were then made to curve one way, then bent back the other way when strung. Those were the compact bows that steppe horse archers carried.

Why does everyone who tries to pitch a new weapon in skyrim ALWAYS BRING UP THE DWEMER!? Your logic is flawed because you just said 'skyrim is 200 years after oblivion, tech advanced. then you go throw in a race thats been GONE FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS! did we magically find 'new' dwemer tech? What are the changes of that? Please, you have a great idea here, don't ruin it by dragging an extinct race into it.

Sorry if I blew up there, but I'm sick of the dwemer defence.

As an archery enthusiast, it definitely would make a lot of tactical sense for there to also be recurve and short bows in the game. Guild Wars executed this particularly well, with bows having varying ranges, speeds, and arcs.

They were then made to curve one way, then bent back the other way when strung. Those were the compact bows that steppe horse archers carried.

You mean as they do with recurve bows? It'd be interesting if some of Skyrim's bows had more defined contours to them - all of Oblivion's were rather unimpressive (to me at least), looking like overdecorated flatbows. Morrowind had some short bows as well, although in Skyrim I'm not sure if we'll be seeing a return to the various types.

On one hand, Bethesda seems to have put a lot more effort into shooting mechanics, but on the other it seems that bows have become more of a "special" weapon: rangers are encouraged more than ever, it seems, to have backup weapons. Now that it takes longer to nock arrows, and we won't simply be holding down the S key whilst firing 30 arrows into every enemy we encounter, that'd be the perfect excuse for them not to give bows the diversity and attention they deserve. :P

Eh, I just figured perhaps not everyone knows what a "recurve" bow is. And yes, those composite bows are recurve bows.

compound bows werent developed until 1966. In 1966 we had tanks, airplanes, computer, machines guns, missiles and in three years we would visit the moon. something tells me that a society with out primitive explosives would not have a compound bow.
