Computer overheating when installing big mods : Fallout 3

Hi I'm trying to start out using mods for Fallout 3. I've been following this guide to install mods.

I've been using Fallout mod manager to install mods like the video said. And I made it all the way up to the package manager and create from folder step without any problems untill I tried loading a big file like Marts Mutant Mod and Fallout Wanderers eddition. When I try loading them up it gets to about three quarters of the way in the compressing FOmod progress bar then slows to a crawl then my computer shuts down due to a thermal event.

By some strange miracle I was eventually able to get MMM on without my computer shutting down but no luck with FWE. Does anyone have any idea why this could be happening?

If you feel comfortable doing so, open the case and make sure the processor fan hasn't come loose.
Also, I have a dust problem here in the desert and the vents on the processor heatsink get a layer of it and block airflow. I see a noticable effect on performance and when this happens. I have to blow my unit out with a can of air once in awhile.
It sounds like your processor is running borderline and the extra usage needed to unzip the files is putting it over the edge - it's not mod related, just coincidental.

IIRC Nvidia put out some drivers that caused your videocard to ramp up and overheat. Dont remember which exactly, but the newest have fixed that, so I suggest updating just in case.

You might want to also consider taking a good look at your case, making sure it has enough ventilation. How your case is designed can have a big impact on how well it maintains temperatures. I had a problem awhile back with overheating when I got a new processor and the solution was as simple as buying a new case that was better designed and had better ventilation.

Just a small bit of safety info. If you took off the heatsink altogether. You will come up against more problems had you not re applied the goop that was there with more goop. The heatsink uses compound of either ceramic or silver to allow for proper heat dissapation through said heatsink. For the life of me atm I cannot think of the darn word for the goop itself...its very much irritating me.

At any rate, if assuming you took off the heatsink. Go to radioshack and pick up what is called Arctic Silver. Apply half of 1 grain of rice to the top of the CPU and re apply the heatsink. If you hadn't removed the heatsink at all, then ignore all I've wrote here =)

And the goal of Thermal Paste is not to provide conductivity, as metal-to-metal has a much higher thermal conduction rate, but to provide better conductivity then metal-air-metal for places where the heatsink and the CPU cover don't match up at the molecular level. You want as little as possible on the surface, just enough to fill in all the microscopic pits in the surface.

A little dab 'll do ya.

Since nearly all modern CPU's have thermal limiting, the worst that can happen is the CPU auto-throttles to about 1/10th normal speed or the machine shuts down entirely. It's not like the old days of yore where the CPU would burn up entirely if not properly cooled. If you have replacement paste, scraping both sides with an expired credit card works well followed by re-applying a tiny bead and then spreading the bead out over the surface. The goal is a faint sheen.
