Computers

Post » Sun Sep 20, 2009 4:52 pm

So I have been playing this game for awhile now and I have noticed an odd thing. How come, in the year 2077, the computers look so much older. I feel like in 60 years they would have some pretty nice computers. I also have no idea why I am even setting this up as a topic....but I guess you can give me your opinion on how these computers are any better. Also none of the computers seem to have google....whats the point of a computer if you cant do anything on it.....

Partly because the Integrated Circuit was never invented.

Comparing a RobCo Terminal to a modern-day computer is like comparing the PiPBoy 3000 to an iPod Touch.

Sure, the latter does more, looks better, and is much smaller. But only one of the 2 can have a nuclear bomb dropped on it and survive

I imagine these computers were the only computers to survive the great war.

Vacuum tubes were so weird. My father kept an old tube radio for ages...it worked well, but you could roast marshmallows on it. I also doubt it would survive a nuclear blast...glass is easily breakable y'know. hehe

Despite being in 50's origins themed, the game still beats modern day tech...after all, we still can't push a button and teleport ourselves anywhere. No plasma/lasers either. Beam me up Scotty.

while in reality, technology was worked to be smaller. in the fallout universe, they made them work better and better, being able to do more. but they still look like a heap o junk.

while we have awsome computers, they have robots that can act like an actual human.

I've wondered about this for a while, is it teleportation or fast travel? After all the same amount of time passes as would if we'd run there but on the other hand nothing happens during the journey.

It's boring as hell is what it is. I hate the Oblivion travel system. I want my map nodes back...

I think he meant EMP wise. EMP doesn't affect vacuum tube technology.

Everything looks old because everything is salvaged; its all supposed to be pre-war.

Here is something you might find shockingly incredible.

Because it's not a 50s theme. In the Fallout universe, a split occurred in the time-line, and the world didn't really move on from Atomic Age ideals. While Atomic Sciences flourished, many ideas never came to surface like the integrated circuit, which is why we still see vacuum tubes.

It's more advanced while being less advanced. Like the steam-powered Dwemer automatons in TES :D

:tops:

Its their year 2077 onward, but various cultural and scientific events did not occur, while others (that did not occur for us) did for them. It also cannot be taken too literally, as it was already set (prior to 2077), in the "idealized made true" future of their 1950's pop-science, fears, and cultural of expectations what was to come ~and then it was blown all to hell by atomic war.
