Concept Albums

Post » Wed May 11, 2016 7:57 am

Hello 2-Caps!

I have been searching. The earliest use of the term, found so far, appears to be 1961. Something called Korvette Malls announced that they were creating their own record label

and that they would probably concentrate on concept albums such as singalongs!. It was apparently in Variety. I found it on a discussion page, and you know how reliable those

things are.

I think there may be a difference between an album that is themed and an album that is narrative.

There is another great Lou Reed one called Magic and Loss. Especially now.

One that I liked since I was a kid was Queen II.

Quadrophenia and Tommy are worth a mention I suppose.

Does anyone really listen to albums from end to end any more? It is only in unusual circumstances that I will do that these days, with Music For Airports or something at night maybe.

Edit: However this has reminded me I have a concept album sitting on my phone I have to get around to listening to end to end, namely The Amazing Adventures Of The Liverpool Scene.

Actually, I meant to get back to you on this sooner. I don't quite know how to put this, it may come as a bit of a shock, but I was only kidding about the SAS and being forced to read the Daily Mail. Just a little leg pulling - I think we're all sick to death of hearing about the bloody Royals.

Sorry for any distress, inconvenience and expense it may have caused you. No idea why the Mounties are after you - must be for something else. Sounds pretty serious, if it's for 50 cents. Best of luck.

:P

Yes. At least one a day.

Just listened again to Treasure by the Cocteau Twins since discussing it earlier. Wondrous.

Does Quadrophenia count? I thought was more of a full rock opera, like Jesus Christ Superstar and Tommy. Of course I don't "know" for certain, but that's my gut feeling :)

I do on my PC but have not had a working record player (or records) for over a decade, now :)

Basically never. I remember ten years back or so I was half asleep on the couch while listening to the entire Seventh Son of A Seventh Son with Maiden. Not their best album imho but it worked like a charm at that moment :)

Operation Mindcrime from Queensryche is a great concept album as well. Lately I can't stop listening to Suite Sister Mary in particular lol, great song. I love how well the overarching story is portrayed in the music videos. The guy they got to play Dr. X is legit sinister looking.

Don't usually listen to full albums on my iPod, but I do when I'm driving in my car - just have a CD player, so I'll put a disc in and let it go.

When released in 1973 It was described as a rock opera, however It took until 1996 for it to be performed as such.

So that makes it a concept album, many modern musicals and indeed operas start as studio work before progressing to

the performance stage. A more recent example would be Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.

Most of Andrew Lloyd-Webbers musical were released as studio albums and are described as concept albums.

Some musicals and rock operas never make it beyond the album stage, presumably because if you cant get

the public to buy the album, how can you expect them to buy tickets for the show.

Savatage - streets a rock opera is one of my favourite.

Pretty much all of savatages later albums are concept albums, and I think all of their albums as trans Siberian orchestra are concept albums too.

Savatage - wake of Magellan

Savatage - dead winter dead

And savatage - gutter ballet are also favourites of mine.
