I am concerned about the graphics

Post » Tue Feb 15, 2011 3:16 am

read this before you troll: i am loyal to the elder scrolls series and would never hate on any game in the series. i dont want there to be fights about what i say, and i am only raising a CONCERN for the graphics in skyrim.

IMHO the graphics in skyrim are good...but let's take a look at some of the other blockbusters to be released in the time range: mw3, bf3, crysis 2. i know they are fps games but i am talking only about graphics here. i think it is fair to say that skyrim is noticeably behind in graphics compared to bf3 adn crysis 2. mw3 will look somewhat the same as mw2 which has even/better graphics.

and now let's look at the games released in the time range of oblivion: gears of war, saints row, lord of the rings, GTA, and even in 2007 there was cod 4. oblivion's graphics surpassed or came up even to all of those.
so my point is, in 2006 the TES game of the time was next to the leader in graphics with maybe a few exceptions. now it is not so much. I know graphics aren't all that matter, but still something to consider.

It's an open world game. There's a limit to how much you can do visually with a world that huge.

Just a note: MW3, BF3, and Crysis 2 are all available on consoles as well, so don't go playing the blame game.

Did you not see the other graphics thread on the very first page of the forums that's already six pages deep?

Like other's said, another thread on this. Like I said, unless you are on PC with modding potential, you sacrifice graphics for content.

I refuse to acknowledge any non-existent graphical inferiority.

Why must everything be compared to the best? Especially when the best is out of sight for the game in question.

We're talking about totally different game engines made for completely different purposes.

Crysis 2 has great graphics because it has a very linear game world. It loses something for its insane graphics.

Of course, Crysis had insane graphics AND an open game world (for the most part).

Skyrim (and RDR) seems to have hit the graphics peak for open-world games on consoles.

Expecting more is simply unrealistic given the hardware.

The graphics in Skyrim are going to be so mind blowingly amazing that I'm going to have to wear reading glasses (when I don't even need them) just to blur it out alittle

Yea because creating a new thread when there already is a graphics thread seven pages long on the first page of the forums is "highly constructive."

It doesn't have anything to do with consoles. These games you're talking about are all much smaller in scope than Skyrim, which has a huge and open world, not an fps. Games that have larger and more open worlds can not have the same graphics as a game with a smaller game world that is developed at the same time with the same technology (given the programmers and such have the same skill, of course). This is a technical limitation of larger game worlds. I think the graphics for Skyrim that we've seen look amazing for a 360. The shots I've seen from Crysis are certainly better, but they were all PC shots, not 360 shots, and they have a much smaller world to render. If you want to criticize this games graphics, show me a game with an open world the size of Skyrim's that has comparable graphics.

Edit: in case you were wondering, such a game does not exist.

Who votes for "this thread will be locked any time soon?". A good bit of repeated posts coupled with tit for tat arguements :snoring:

@golliath9.

what should Skyrim's graphics look like? (considering the open world, and rendering tons of interactive objects).

Can consoles handle it? (also consider frame rates)

I am actually pleased with what I have seen, even though my comp could probably handle more. So if we can have our cake and eat it, I say bring it on. but then that will leave out a lot of people.

What I don't understand is why it can't be ok to "merely" have freakin' awesome graphics.

Why must everything be a competition?

Why can't people be satisfied with "great"?

Because people are never satisfied with what they have; we always want and strive for more. It's what drives some of us to be great, and has driven technological innovation and the overall success of the human species as a whole for many thousands of years.

Consequently, it's also what drives some of us to be complete douchebags. Go figure.

Yeah I'm not interested in what games come to par with Skyrim, or what games will or won't surpass it. The fact remains that so far, from what we've seen in both screens and footage, the graphics are already, at this incredibly early stage, better than Oblivion's by a long shot. Faces are more detailed, water looks ace. Weapons, armor, decals, creatures, animations, third person, I could go on. All this has been seen, albeit only a little, in the trailer. It's better than Bethesda has ever been able to produce, and I personally am only interested in how they can better their own stuff, not surpass anything that has nothing to do with them. Mainly because it doesn't matter. Crysis 2 has improved on it's old version. Rage uses the id tech 5 engine, which is a massive improvement all round. But these games utilize those engines for themselves, because it;s what they do best. Comparing graphics to other engines is redundant, because they are all different. So, yes the graphics are something to be concerned about, even unto the release date, but they are on;y really comparable to the older versions of the same graphics.
