Concerns about the PC version

Post » Tue Nov 10, 2009 3:59 pm

I don't have any concerns about the PC version. All of gamesas's previous games (apart from Battlespire) have been fine. Easy to enjoy and technically pitched at the right level.

My concern (that is restricted to the PC version, I have others that would encompass every version but that's another thing) would be the UI for the PC version. Take a little more time, less than a day or two worth of work for someone experienced with the game engine and the construction set, and adjust the UI for the PC. Yes, I know that if SR is as moddable as MW and OB, that the community will take care of it, but c'mon we all know that's a lame excuse!

I want Steam as DRM!
There, I said.

I certainly hope they use the Steam method like New Vegas did.

Everyone should really give Steam a proper try. I hope Skyrim will use it as well. Valve is doing a great thing for PC gamers with Steam.

The UI is not too much of a concern for me. In the Kotaku interview, Todd recognized our complaints and promised their UI cannot get any worse.

Graphic options concern me a little. Games these days go too crazy with blur and other filters. I hope there are a lot of options.
Not having anti-aliasing in some games drives me crazy (GTA4). I want smooth edges! Oh and proper windowed mode support. I'm very picky about that. I hate downloading hacks just so I can multitask a little.

I think DRM won't be an issue on PC because they will integrate it into steam mostly...just a guess.

Actually, I would imagine they will bring the TES construction set to consuls after what Forge world has done for the Halo Universe

Seriously doubt that. Halo maps are one thing. Microsoft isn't going to allow the construction set that will allow nvde mods, advlt content, and other "inappropriate" content on their system. That is leaving aside the question of how to make sure no malicious mods that will intentionally do something to people's games gets out.

I can live with CD-Keys, DVD-checks etc, I just don't want to start up and login onto Steam everytime I want to play.

I had to be logged in once; when I downloaded and installed my games [from Bethesda, Morrowind goty, Oblivion goty, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas]. Once activated, I go offline and don't have to log in again, unless I want to patch the game.

Here is the deal for me.... if its Steam only then i wont be spending any money... I own 3 copies of F3 and 4 of Oblivion standard and GOTY on both PC and Console for each... I have yet to buy New Vegas and may never.... i don't think its right to remove the freedom of the player by FORCING them into using steam..

steam in there contract states they do not guarantee the games you play and they have the right to remove your ability to play them when ever they choose. For that reason i will not support any game on steam.

As for other means of DRM?

Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Origins, both were disk check and on steam and all of them did amazing sales... beyond amazing, enough to warrant sequels! Every form of DRM can be pirated and fixed, every single type (even ubisoft) has been thwarted, so why use steam? Give the honest gamers the ability to play there game how ever when ever they want without worrying about activation servers, a magical account held by steam that could disappear.

The Witcher 2 is 100% DRM free, I've already bought the ultra collectors edition and will be able to download install and play on day one and FOREVER with no need or reason to ever worry about a thing until the end of time. THAT is power to the player, that is a company that knows what the gamers want. In Fact im looking to buy a second copy for my friend overseas where there is no internet.

given that New Vegas has been out for just about two months now and has remained on the top sellers list on Steam virtually every day of those two months, i think it's safe to say Bethesda's found DRM they'll stick with.

After trying out Steam via F:NV all my prejudice against it went out the metaphorical window.

Edit: I will now happily take Steam before any other Desperate Resistance Measure in the known world.

Three things I do want to see in the PC version

- Optimized game (no console port)
- QUAD CORE support
- Mods

And Steam would be nice too since Oblivion is running really smooth without a DVD. :>

I really like Steam and hope they integrate Skyrim with it. It will protect the series somewhat from piracy without including intrusive and annoying DRM. It's also convenient being able to download a game to any computer with an internet connection.

It might be a problem for some, but really, all you have to do is be hooked up to the web once to activate/install the game, then just go into offline mode afterwards.

Bethesda's DRM is always very reasonable. Steamworks integration would be a step above the GFWL integration into FO3.

I sure hope they don't force feed Steam down our throats. That's why I will never touch New Vegas.

The biggest issue for me is Bethesda's continuing refusal to design a proper interface for PC users. Other devs are due to release (or have released) rpgs that are multiplatform, but which take into account the needs of PC players - Bioware with Mass Effect, and Eidos with Deus Ex 3, to name but two, both have optimized controls for mouse/keyboard. Why do Bethesda refuse to budge on this issue?

well to simplify my concerns the steam bit will be an issue for me. 12/8 was the first time my pc was online since nov 2006 and it's only because a neighbor of the house i'm watching has an open wireless network. and my main residence is in a converted commercial building so they will only offer me business rates on broadband.

I don't really think that it will require steam as if it did you would need internet connection and some people don't. Steam is pretty stupid but DRM won't really be a major problem.

I would love if the retail version had Steam.

I'd be able to get whatever CE there is, and have full-Steam integration.

I would rather have it without any kind of DRM (ala Witcher 2), but if there has to be some kind of restrictions i′d rather pick Steam.

I don't agree with that. The GFWL integration in FO3 never required you to get a GFWL account and register the game online to play it. Steamworks do.

Otherwise, I am only renting/leasing the property.

Doesn't simply agreeing to the UELA mean the same thing? You do not own anything, other than a piece of plastic/paper in the case of retail owners. You are licensing, or "renting" the right to play the software contained on that plastic.

Out of those three, I hope for Quad Core Support. Mods are a wasted wish because they will happen and it's connection to the console version is also a given. Quad core support would help counteract the hiccups that may transfer by it's relationship to the console versions.

Right, we were too late in arguing about DRM with new vegas, but I'm going to try and get there early this time.

Dear Bethesda,

Please do not force us to use steam (or equivalent DRM).
I have no problem with the offer to use it if people want to for achievements etc.

This is the main condition in my decision to buy this game. If it's overpriced and the reviews are terrible, I will still buy it.
If I have to use steam, I will not.

Yours faithfully,

If they use Steamworks for achievements, I guarantee that they'll use it for DRM. I'm fairly certain they'll be using it for both - New Vegas already used it, and it's the direction that PC games in general seem to be going. Not something I have any problem with, but if having to use Steam is enough to drive you away from the game then that's your prerogative.
