Concerns about the PC version

Post » Tue Nov 10, 2009 11:27 am

First, please refrain from turning this topic into a platform battle. I'll monitor this as often as I can and make sure to report platform bashing and flamebaiting posts.

I know it's too early for these things but can we talk about Steam requirement on retail copies, system requirements, mod support, etc.

Well DRM is definately a concern on pc, as consoles dont have DRM. But I'd take PC every time cause you cant mod console games.

I think DRM won't be an issue on PC because they will integrate it into steam mostly...just a guess.

Actually, I would imagine they will bring the TES construction set to consuls after what Forge world has done for the Halo Universe

I can't say anything about system requirements or mod support (even though I fully expect a CS like previous titles) but on the topic of Steam, I'll say the following; I used to think that because New Vegas was made by Obsidian it wouldn't be a trend to carry over into the Elder Scrolls series. Then I realized Bethesda still published NV and something like that seems like a deal between distribution platform and publisher to me, not developer. I wouldn't be surprised if Skyrim comes with a Steam requirement and achievements and all that jazz... but I won't necessarily be pleased nor disgruntled with it. My stance on Steam is pretty neutral.

Steam is DRM.

If it's just something like integration with Steam then that's fine by me (though those with slow internet connections will be displeased). So long as they don't go overboard Assassins Creed 2-style, I'll buy it.

According to the technical support subforum of New Vegas many people have severe problems with it, and many of them blame it on Steam (and not only because of low connection speed, mind you) but since I don't have that game (I'm waiting for its GotY/whatever Edition with all DLC) I can't verify it.

well TES oblivion was for pc and consoles and was by default not on max settings (high..ish settings). considering RPG games require more texture processing than cpu power, and since they would need to keep the console versions looking good, they would have to optimize the game engine and overhaul the graphics. the system requirements are likely to be similar or slightly higher than they were for oblivion.

Consoles have the DRM built in, they don't get away free.
So far, bethesda have released their games without any restrictive DRM at all (Steam could be argued, but I argue that that was Obsidian's choice), and they've sold very well indeed. I don't see any reason to break that.
(re: Construction kit, it's not a licensing thing, this generation of consoles can't handle it, and it'd be a lot of effort to port. Maybe next gen)

I wonder if we can port mods over to Skyrim without much trouble?

I mean, there are SO MANY visual enhancing mods (armors and weapons spring to mind), and... well... it'd be an incentive if you can port your work easily

The past 2 PC games that Zenimax released (Rogue Warrior and Fallout: New Vegas) both used Steamworks, so I would guess that the same will apply to Skyrim.

That said, it's very possible I'm wrong :P

I don't see that happening. I can't even begin to imagine the CS on a console, having to use a controller. They could possibly create something akin to Forge but it would be severely limited and take a lot of time to implement which could be better used.

On DRM, I only played Morrowind on PC, what security did Oblivion have? Would they not just have the same?

Damn if it uses Steam..

I haven't bought a single game that uses steam, yet even if Skyrim is infected by it, I might have to make an exception...

Hopefully, it uses Steam - better that than any other more-prohibitive DRM.

I wouldn't mind Steam all too much and I would certainly take it instead of something like Ubi's DRM, atleast on Steam I can play offline if I want/need to.

As long as it doesn't interfere with mods I don't mind it at all actually.

If they are going to use DRM I hope they use Steam.

I bought Oblivion GotY version from D2D, and it came with a DRM that encrypts the .exe so I couldn't mod it with OBSE :( So I couldn't use alot of mods.

I ended up buying the GotY version on Steam as well (that also had Fighter's Stronghold unlike the D2D version) and it came with an unencrypted .exe so I could use OBSE :D

Even though I've never used Steam on my own computers, I've still played games that required it on other computers..

Aesthetic mods work just fine since they use the plugin system. The only mods that might not work are those who modify the main executable.

One can only hope that Steamworks is involved - Bethesda has learned the process in my view, cut their teeth on New Vegas and I suspect this puts Skyrim in a Great position.

I'm a big fan of Steam now, patches are effortless, they support NVSE (OBSE in this case) which is crazy, and at least it means we will GET a PC version. :)

Nothing but thumbs up if Steam is the choice!

I really do not like the idea of Steam. I often have to travel to places without an internet connection, and this just restricts when and how I can play. Definitely not a fan... Then again, I will probably have to limit myself to playing on my home computer anyway (especially if it is as system intensive as Oblivion was when it first came out), so maybe it won't be too much of an issue.

I guess it'd depend on the game engine

Also, multi-core optimization please. I cry a little every time I remember my CPU1 would just sit there and do nothing for Oblivion

Not true, steam will let you start offline if you don't have an internet connection. The only scenario in which this is not true is if you've half-updated a game and then go offline, but that won't work for obvious reasons.

Contrary to popular belief, Steam has an offline mode that allows you to use it and play videogames without an internet connection.
