Concerns with changes in melee combat in Skyrim.

i might cry if this is FPS noticeable if its like COD and your cross-hair automatically follows someone for like 5 steps i'll cry harder  :shakehead:

Fallout 3 had auto targeting; it did not move the crosshair but adjusted the aim so you hit the target. Very noticeable with a gatling laser and high heavy weapons skill at some distance as it had a visible constant beam.
Because of the auto targeting the beam did not followed your crosshair went a little off so it hit the target, I noticed it then my target died and the beam jumped to the next enemy I thought the effect was overdone, no problem with a minor correction then you miss by 10 cm, but here the beam was outside the edge of my crosshair.

If the degree of magnetism is directly proportional to the skill of the character, then I think I may like it. If not, then I would rather not have it, because I prefer my games to be more engaging.

I would prefer to see the AI better so they stay out of the way of my swinging Hammer or to have a system that insures that a friendly Fire death during battle does not count as murder and so there is no bounty placed on the player but instead of this mabee the new system will be OK we shall have to wait abd see

I'll go with the step forward. I hardly ever joined any melee where I had friendlies involved because I always had to kill them as well (well, after I whacked them a time or two). This included any summons.

I'm convinced that the legionnaires of Cyrodiil attend drills on how to take blows intended for monsters. And then act indignant. I regularly found my character standing around rather than risk hitting one. Magnetism sounds great!

I'm going to wait until I've played the game before I pass judgement on this - I seriously hope it doesn't work like Assassins Creed - I hate that kind of 'lock-on' combat, its really boring.

( Magnetism ) This is the one and only thing that i don't like about all the info so far,or didn't.
I believe it's only slight magnetism. I would still like a toggle, but we haven't seen it in action yet,we may not even notice it.
It might only apply at certain times in the game or during combat.
I believe ( hope ) that when you zoom in with your bow to take your shot it will be your own aim.
It said somewhere ( i think it was on neogaff forums ),that we can hold our breath for archery, and it drains stamina as we do it.
Holding your breath, means steading your shot, and if that is the case, then i don't think magnetism will have an effect in a situation like that. ( in my opinion ).
Anyway, guess we'll have to see how much of an effect it has on gameplay....untill then we can only guess how good or bad it may be.

I hated followers because they kept getting in my way. I didn't find it more a challenge, I found it cheap because the followers block your way complete until he killed the monster or die and leaving me there to rot by myself

If the effect is only noticeable when fighting multiple opponents at the same time then it's a step forward. It will help avoid friendly fire.

I voted "other."

For me, it depends on how magnetism feels in-game. If it feels like artificial auto-targeting, I probably won't like it. But if it feels natural, it could be a great feature.

Wow people take this a bit too far. This isn't ruining TES forever or anything like that.

Also I think this is essential for the "Special moves" and "finishers" we've heard of, I couldn't imagine them without some sort of magnetism.

I'm more of a die roll mechanic type, so I don't really care about FPS targeting being super "free form". Though honestly I think AIs getting in your way limited your freedom a heck of a lot more than a magnetism system would. So I guess I see this as better than oblivion's system. But until we see it in action no one really knows if it is good or bad. But playing whack a mole with my cross hair isn't something I find to be particularly challenging or deep, so I might be coming at this from a different perspective.

Its not like its a lock on system. Slight aim magnitism is very common in first person games. On PC though its not really needed like it is on the consoles though. I feel like people may be thinking its more extreme then it really is.

if it isn't a lock-on type of system, but to where if a friendly npc is slightly closer to you and his arm is in the way of your attack, all the damage goes to the enemy.

i would be happy with that, and i doubt there will be a full on lock on system.

I need to see it in action before I can make a decision because there's so many ways that they can go with auto aim/magnetism

I think it's good to have some of that, since combat in the TES games have always been "twitchy" for me. I think it would be better if it felt that we had an impact on the enemy. It never feels like I am actually hitting them, heh. I'm hoping the more dynamic blood/gore will actually show us we are hitting living beings (well, beings made of pixels anyway, lol).

I play First-person-shooters, third-person-shooters, hack-and-slash, etc, and some of those games have a bit of a "magnet" depending on the game and difficulty level.

I think it's also good for those of us who want to play mostly in third-person. I really, really hope they improve third-person combat.

I mean, I am usually a third-person gamer (but I do play first-person-shooters--the ones without scary monsters, anyway, lol!), so improving third-person makes a really, really big difference to me.
If the TES games doesn't want me to play third-person, then they might as well take it out, lol!

This seems like another attempt to fix some problem by breaking something else. If the problem is AI companions getting in the way, then fix the AI so they don't get in the way, don't prevent or redirect my attacks just to avoid addressing real, legitimate problems.

Guiding your blade to a spot it wasn't targeting is limiting freedom. The player screwing up and attacking an ally because of the reality of combat is not.

I think we really need to get some gameplay footage of their melee combat soon...

it can either be extremely good or extremely crappy :P.

If it's similar to Oblivion, I don't mind. As long as it is not as annoying as swinging your mouse around like the TES: Arena game, I'm totally cool with anything, lol! :D

Make it optional and I don't care. Most games have "auto aim" as an optional feature, it seems logical that this would be too.

When I first read it I thought it was a spell. If it's built right in thats a poor choice

Yeah, the realities of combat are accurately portrayed by the lame oblivion AI. The reason it limits freedom is due to how the AI moved around and the speed of attacks and your limited field of view you aren't screwing up when you hit allies, it is almost pure luck whether or not you do. So you are hamstrung and forced into inaction which is much more freedom limiting. With only one ally it wasn't very bad, but things like the battle of kvatch were lame in the extreme. But hey I guess it got me into the dark brotherhood fairly easily.

Blah, blah you are super leet, blah blah.

Not worried about this "magnetism." Sure, it's another step in the direction TES has been consistently moving in- but I'm on PC, so for me it will be optional...as in "modded out of existence."

I'm fairly certain when they say ''slightly magnetised'' , they are refering to consoles.
Since there would be absolutley no beneficial use for it to be on the PC at all.

I don't care what they do to combat as long as it's not just 2 wild slashes over and over and over and over and over......and over.....and......I hope they get a really good motion capture team and make some really good looking set of actions for each weapon.
