Is there a specific armor you want to land on because of the way it looks and you don't really want to advance from this suit of armor? I do realize that this is a first person game, but to some (like me), character appearance matters. If so, what is this armor you don't want to move from?
Ironically, I chose daedric from looks, but it turns out to be the most protective armor (as far as I know).
My girlfriend is in forsworn armor and it's pretty much her permanent suit for good.

My thief still uses the leather armor I made ages ago.

And my Nord I rp as a hunter living of the land is still rocking the hide armor he picked up in the first dungeon, so yea I definitely have those.

I got to armor cap with Iron armor. So technically it doesn't matter what you choose.

To answer the question: Ancient nord gloves/cuirass + orkish boots + Apprentice hood.

I still use the Whiterun Guard Armor given to me super early in the game. I used some smithing synergies and am a little below the cap, but it's good enough that I can battle without much trouble. I really like how it looks so I just stuck with it.

None of the armors appeal to me. Closest is the thieves guild armor, but I'd prefer gauntlets to bracers. I'm probably just going to mod a set of elven to have my favorite clothing's models once the CK comes out, that way I can get decent armor class without looking so...gold.

I'm glad that I did the thieves guild quests up to Blindsighted. Talk about spoiler alert lol.
