Confederate Log: PC Gamers want too much; too fast.

Post » Fri Oct 29, 2010 12:49 pm

Day 11: Minor update released.

Feedback - It didn't do much, but it's a start.

I'm not sure how many of you feel this way, but these forums are giving Crytek WAY too much heat. Crytek did a hell of a job with this game; there's no denying it.

The problem is that compared to major game corporations (Blizzard, IW, Trey, Sierra, 2K...) Crytek is still small-time. I'm not running off experience, but it's my judgement that Crytek doesn't have the staff power that PC gamers are used to working with. Not only that, but Crytek is currently juggling patches on multiple systems.

Don't get me wrong. My last post said that I was about to eat my Crysis 2 disk. I just think that they've got the message.

We ALL know that Crysis 2 could use a DX update, better anti-cheat software (even PB if possible), and SLI support. We also know that Crytek needs to find a way to shut down sites like "www.crysis-2-hack.com", as well as others, that are giving mods to anyone that wants them.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is...give them time. It's day 11. You can't just make a "god-patch" overnight. Or even in a week. Trust me.

-Confederate

EDIT* geniusprime has convinced me that DX11 is not NEEDED

EPIC LULZ yeah they did a hell of a job because
I'm sick of the following

Sick of the Cheaters
Sick of the random crashes since they supposedly implemented "Anti-Cheat" especially when i'm doing well(SRSLY). It's crashed 3 times in the last 4 hours!
Sick of poor net coding/Hit detection/Lag/reload animations going the all the way through instead of switching the weapon like it should when Press the weapon switch key BEFORE the reload animation starts.
Sick of my stats not saving
Sick of Disconnecting
Sick of not being able at all to get into a NA server
Sick of the bugs, I can use upgrades and then they reset to locked and I can still use them with them equiped but gain nothing towards assessments.
Sick of shooting people with a whole clip at point blank with any weapon with my crosshair never leaving their upper torso and they turn around and kill me near instantly when I have full health. Or The Marshall shooting someone at point blank range 3 times and they still don't die, they aim at me with a marshall not even aiming at my body at all and kill me with full health in one shot
Sick of the horrible spawn points(SPAWN, Ok gotta find cover before..**** GANG raqeD BY 3 PEOPLE ON THE OPPOSITE TEAM)
Sick of the JAW, Seriously this gun is broken. I don't know how many times i've shot someone point blank with this and absolutely NOTHING happens. The rocket fires and just disappears and then the gun gets stuck mid animation when i'm trying to switch back to my main resulting in death.

This **** should've never happened in the first place.
The game should've been delayed a month or so for them to QA this **** more and fix it.
Because lord knows that they aren't being paid by EA to fix this. They have to do it on their own time.

It feels like I paid 60$ for a frustration enabler.
What's worse is that they had a DEDICATED team to develop the multiplayer and this still happened.

PC Gamers want things that should have been in the game before it was released. Fancy that.

Ok, for one :TL;DR

#2, EA PUSHED THEM for the release. Which is why it's so riddled with bugs. I agree with you saying that it should've been delayed a month. Or two for that matter. I wouldn't have minded waiting for a complete game, but no. EA didn't want a bad mark on it's name.

Like I said before, I completely agree with just about everything you said. I just feel like Crytek is taking too much heat, when I know they are working on it.

To quote a wise man "You can't just make a 'god-patch' overnight."

The only thing that I disagree with is the NEED for Directx 11.

That's...debatable to say the least. Definitely an upgrade from DX9 though. I mean, Crytek STRIVES to make the benchmark in gaming. The DX software is required for the game to run, so if they are going for the benchmark...They might as well just put DX11 in.

Releasing a poorly designed buggy piece of **** with zero regard for the established modding community is *NOT* a "hell of a job"

One other thing that I am getting tired of seeing: people trying to get recognition for their problems.

Crytek has TWO people surfing these threads, Adam and Tom. No. Neither one of them are going to acknowledge your problems. They know the issues, and they aren't going to take the time to tell you: YES I F*CKING KNOW.

You forgot a whole lot of bugs.

If it was just multiplayer balance issues and graphical complaints, I'd agree, but there's also the nano catalyst bug which makes me not want to even touch single player. An entire feature of the campaign, progression, is broken.

PC, out of all of the releases of C2, is the most broken, buggy game, and also the easiest to repair (no patch certification period, etc). So why has Xbox been updated but not PC? Even just a tiny nano catalyst bug fix would make a world of difference.

To bring back all of the features from Crysis 1 (64 bit executable, DX11) and then fix all of their bugs is gonna take time. I'm OK with them stalling adding new features, NOT stalling on fixing crippling bugs. That is inexcusable. It's day 11 and I still can't play through SP and experience the game as it was intended thanks to the Nano Catalyst bug.

Fix your game Crytek. I paid 60 for this, you're making more money off of every PC sale than console since you have no first-party certification to go through, so give us what we deserve. Don't charge us more for less. This is outrageous.

Ok then. Let's see you design those graphics. Take a stab at the story. Cast and record the voices. OH OH OH. Design a better engine. Crytek went for the STORY. THE CAMPAIGN. You know, what Crysis was made for. If you remember correctly, Crysis 1 was not for multi-player. It was made for the single-player. And correct me if I'm wrong...but there aren't exactly an "unexpected" amount of bugs with the single-player. The only big bug is the Nano-C bug. Every game has it's glitches. I still say give them time.

No its not debatable its a fact that they do not NEED to implement Directx 11. It would be nice and some people would prefer having it but it is definitely not a NEED. It seems that developers in general are rather reluctant with DX 11 implementation but this should not come as a surprised to PC gamers for developers has historically dragged their feet when it comes to implementing new technology.

Well, now that I decided to actually READ what you were talking about, I see what you're saying.

Does it NEED it? No. You're right. Yes, it would be nice, but it isn't needed.

Does it NEED an upgrade at all? Again, no. DX9 is a solid setup. It's proven itself, and it really isn't a detriment to the game. They nerfed the graphics so it could release on console, and DX9 was all it needed for the graphics released.

My guess? DX10 files have already been found in the Crysis directory. I would expect an upgrade to 10 or 11, as well as added Advanced Graphics options, all in the same move.

I think what should be the real question at hand is what would DirectX 11 or 10 do for the game? Lets be real here. Crytek can simply add support for DirectX 10 and 11 and the game can look identical to DirectX 11.

Tessellation has been around for a while especially with AMD cards but its was never really used. There is a strong chance that this feature would take a while to be utilised in gaming. The application is cool in concept but the frame-rate hit is devious. I would be looking into Directx 11 more as UDK stabilizes their implementation.

DX11 is needed to maximize the profits on PC thats just a fact.

That's similar to what I said before. I think that the upgrade to 10 or 11 is going to be so that users can change Advanced Graphics options. Crysis does not implement Tessellation into it's engine. Therefore, I agree that DX11 is not NEEDED.

As for my OP, the forums are lit up with people yelling about DX11 being NEEDED in the game, which is why I wrote it in. I didn't actually think about it's uses until you mentioned it.

As for EPIC, I didn't know the new UDK was looking to actually unlock the potential of Tessellation. I'm curious how it will work, considering for Tessellation to work correctly, you need a strong Multi-Threading engine to match up with the new DX11.

Do you even know what DX does? DX11 is useless for a game that is graphically designed for the consoles.

You should check out the Samaritan video demonstrating some of the DirectX 11 features. I was unable to get it to work as well as the demonstration due to the lack of documentation but the current iteration is not as stable as Directx 9.

That was gorgeous. They really are going for it. If it's going to work in-game though, that Multi-Threading setup is completely needed. Last thing I want is frame rate lag due to my cores not being in sync.

As for the DX11 issue. I'm thinking about making it into a thread, and possibly getting people to understand why it isn't needed.

I'm 99% sure that half of the people posting here are CLUELESS.

You are totally wrong! The technical implementation of Tessellation at acceptable fps has already been done in numerous games. The artistic implementation is where it has often failed.

PS: For me this shows a huge difference in Hawx2 and the benchmark runs at an average of 135fps maxed out (except with only 4xAA) on my single GTX480.

I can't agree or disagree with the HAWX statement...I never played. Did consider getting it today though...idk. Haven't decided.

Anyway. You're saying that the point of using DX11 is just for the artistic implementation? It's too late for that.

As much as I sympathise with Crytek and acknowledge that Crysis 2 is a GREAT game, they foolishly PROMISED PC gamers a priority title with next gen visuals and released a port which fell short on all technical aspects.
Rule number 1 of business: don't make promises to your customers if you can't deliver, ESPECIALLY when the promises only act to increase expectations your game is clearly incapable of meeting. If Crytek were honest with PC gamers from the start and noted that consoles would perhaps constrain the PC release a little they wouldn't be in this position.
Furthermore, if Crytek actually ACKNOWLEDGED the concerns of their PC community, like say for instance by telling them definitively whether or not there will be a DX11 patch, the community will not be nearly so pissed.

Crysis 2 would've been a triumph for PC gaming had Crytek handled the business aspects of its release appropiately.

Totally wrong? I don't think so. However I would like to know of games outside of Hawx 2 that implements tessellation meaningfully. BTW the difference is barely noticeable and the framerate hit is rather steep for a minor improvement in mesh density.

This is spot on. OP didn't mention that the bugs are driving most people nuts. I don't know a thing about programming, but comon this should not have been in release. The catalyst bug, stats resetting in MP, totally inexcusable. And that its not fixed already with a hotfix is completely absurd. I want 2 bug fixes, now. That's not too much or too fast.
