Confirmed Voice Talent?

Post » Fri Jul 01, 2011 2:06 pm

Max Von Sydow will add his Scandinavian-flavoured brogue to Esbern, one of the last remaining Blades, and his character will act as a guide of sorts for the player in Skyrim. Apart from that though, have there been any other voice actors or actresses announced as contributing to the game? I think that we can safely assume that Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter, will return as the voice of the female Nords (or some of them, anyway), as she has done to great effect in the last two games. Wes Johnson, who voiced the male Imperials in Oblivion, and (I think) the Orcs in Morrowind, seems to be well-liked at Bethesda and will probably make a return. Other than that, do we know anything else about this exciting part of the game?

I for one hope that we see the return of Ralph Cosham, who voiced the male Bretons in Oblivion with much distinction. He was perhaps my favourite voice actor in Oblivion, and I like just listening to his voice, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjpb2EXrA1A

So, am I wrong in thinking that it's only Von Sydow who has been announced as being in the game? Who would you like to see as a voice actor? Anyone from previous games that you'd like to see make a triumphant return?

UPDATE:

Confirmed Voice Talent

Esbern: Max Von Sydow
Female Dunmer: Linda Canyon
Male Redguards: Michael Mack
Male Imperials: Jeff Baker
(Likely female Nords: Lynda Carter)

Meh.

I would prefer no voice acting and tons of dialogue.

Max Von Snydow is fricking aazing though. But if were gonig to have dialogue though, lets have less celebrities and more uncostly unknown people.

We already know that Jeff Baker is back, since we heard him voicing Arvel the Swift in the demo. Michael Mack is obviously back as the voice of the male Redguards; we heard him talking to Linda Canyon (female Dunmer) as well. Personally I've always liked Wes Johnson better than Jeff Baker as the male Imperials, so I do hope he's back, even if he's just voicing a few unique characters. He made a damn fine Lucien LaChance, and I sure as hell liked his slightly Scottish Sheogorath better than the Morrowind one. And I think it's a very safe bet that Wonder Woman will be back as female Nords, though I hope female Orcs have their own new voice actress.

Hmm... looks like I wasn't paying sufficient attention! Was Jeff Baker the male Orcs and Nords in Oblivion? And he's now voicing the male Imperials? Hmmm- I hope that that indeed doesn't exclude Wes Johnson from the proceedings. He sent me a few really interesting PMs before Oblivion was released, after I had badgered him for info, and he ended up doing a great job in Oblivion, even if his voice was, like all the others, horrendously over-used.

Bethesda should hire Justin Bieber to do some voice acting. Maybe not. His voice is a bit too high for Skyrim.

If we're going with musicians I'd like the following:

Billie Joe Armstrong
Angus Young
Steven Tyler
And the voice of Alduin: Ozzy Osbourne.

EDIT: Paul Mcartney too...

Yeah, mostly joking, I'd rather the budget be spent on a lot of voices than just famous ones.

Interesting to note that on imdb Pro, it lists the total Skyrim budget as:

Budget
? $100,000,000 (estimated)

I think that it would be a huge mistake to go back to a purely text-based format. I do understand your concerns about "dumbing down" the game, in the sense that you can get across more information with written text than you can with speech (due to memory restrictions), but the flavour and character and emotion that can be conveyed through the spoken word, as opposed to mere text, is a powerful tool that, if used appropriately, can make the game better. The way in which dialogue was used in Oblivion was on the whole poor, but that doesn't mean that it can't be improved upon, and hopefully with Skyrim they can get the balance right with sharp writing, and characters who have plenty of interesting things to say.

Would that even be a lot for a company like Bethesda?

No, Jeff Baker was the voice of male Dunmer and Imperials in Morrowind. He also voiced Dagoth Ur and Sheogorath. He wasn't in Oblivion but he did voice Haskill in Shivering Isles. Wes Johnson did the Orcs and Bretons in Morrowind, and returned to voice Mr. Burke and Fawkes in Fallout 3, so I don't see why they'd snub him for Skyrim. Jonathan Bryce voiced the male Nords, Orcs, Khajiit, and Argonians in Oblivion, and the Nords in Morrowind. Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if the entirety of the Morrowind/Oblivion voice cast (Big Hollywood Celebrities aside) made their return for Skyrim, because they'd still total less than 20 even if they all came back. That leaves 50 more voice actors. And some of the Morrowind/Oblivion VAs had some impressive range, as evidenced by the wide variety of roles they played, so bear in mind that 70 voice actors can mean more than 70 voices.

I would of course love to see some of my favorite VAs included in the cast. Oh, what I wouldn't give to have Simon Templeman and Michael Bell in the game, especially if they were joined by Rene Auberjunois and Richard Doyle. Hell, throw Paul Lukather and Anna Gunn in there too, get the whole damn Legacy of Kain cast included. Well, except Tony Jay. RIP.

Sadly this, to my experience with Beth games is not their strong point. But whether or not I want it, its been decided they will have voiceacting and my opinion means nothing.

But its my opinion and I'm sticking to it. I agree with you that certain tones and emotions can only be impacting if done through actual voice acting. But myself I can imagine it pretty clearly in my head so thats where I stand.

That was comprehensive- cheers. So Jeff Baker is playing at least some of the male Imperials in Skyrim, Michael Mack returns as the male Redguards, and Linda Canyon also returns as the female Dunmer? I'll update the OP. (Incidentally, Linda Canyon makes every character she plays sound like an old woman, and so whilst she did a good job in Oblivion I wonder whether they'll have younger-sounding voice actors for the younger Dark Elves?)

I actually like that quality of the Dunmer women in Morrowind. It's a nice soft feminine counterpart to the male voices, who sound like they smoke six packs of cigarettes after dinner, dinner being a plate of gravel and a glass of boiling tar. She was also able to give the unfriendly greetings a nice sharp edge to them (Spit it out or hit the road!) while making the friendlier ones sound downright sweet (You flatter me with your attention, outlander.) It was a nice contrast to the rather girly-sounding Bosmer women and the aristocratic Altmer ones.
