Confront an NPC about a hit placed on your character?

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 2:42 pm

I'll wrap this in spoiler tags:

Spoiler

When exiting Whiterun one day my character was met by some thugs who wanted to "teach" me a "lesson." After looting them I found a note from the NPC that put the hit on me. It was from Arcadia's Cauldron in Whiterun.

... so I went back to the NPC with the note in hand expecting to be able to confront her about it. There was no such dialogue option, and she was cheerful / eager to sell me something. Is there no way to confront the people that put a bounty on my head?!

I thought about putting an axe in her back but it would be meaningless. I want the NPC to know that I figured out her plan.

Yeah, this is really stupid. I had this happen to me in Riverwood right off the bat and killed 3 bandits and the lady in the shop I stole from acted like nothing was the matter. They should at least act hostile to you if they do not allow you to confront them about the bounty.

I found one of these notes and a Dark Brotherhood assassination contract from people I had never even met or knew about, who lived in places I had never visited.

You stole something from her; she sent you thugs; the thugs died. Why would you confront her? You wronged her first.

This occurs with no theft ever taking place though. To my understanding this only occurs from Anesia or however it's spelled though. The witch living by Riverwood. I have had every character get a hit on their head from her just because I visited her hut and found her secret, but she claims I am a thief. Funny thing is she's dead before she would have ever had a chance to set a hit on me... she sends the three thugs after she's dead.

I think it would be a good dialogue option to expand the game. At a minimum I'd like to get a reaction from the NPC for surviving the hit and figuring out the originator. Would they cower in fear? Would they call in the guards? Would they offer you something to spare them? It would be interesting.

Lol, when people do that (happened 4 times so far), I don't confront them, they just end up dead. This one time I killed this guys wife, and he was disgusted by me, so they are not always like the person you encountered.

I was attacked in Winterhold by three thugs,
Spoiler
the note ordering the attack was from Nurelion (spelling?) of the White Phial, Windhelm.
I had done nothing to wrong the guy so i'm not sure what triggers these things.

She isn't the one who sends the thugs if you kill her.
The thugs are sent by her sister, a hagraven you "marry" later on.

I actually like that it happens, adds some flavor. Considering how many people you "wrong" in the game at one point or another, it makes total sense that this would happen. I just wish it was more than just the thugs showing up, you killing them, you find out who sent them, and that's it.

What the thugs say also doesn't quite make sense to me. They say "We're here to teach you a lesson," but they then fight you to the death. It's not a lesson at all if they kill you. :) They should say something different.

This is what the guard system is for. If you "wrong" someone, they go to the guards. God knows there are enough of them in the game.

You think its bad now? Try playing thief that does not attack, anything, ever. I constantly have groups of people wanting to 'teach me a lesson'. Since these people magically know where you are, and there is no avoiding them, I just lead them to a (hopefully nearby) bandit camp. Then I loot their corpses and find out who sent the hit on me and perform another sweep on them. Teach me a lesson, indeed.

It gets even sillier.

My current character ran into a DB assassin on the way to Ivarstead to see the Greybeards, and found a note on the corpse. When said character was recruited by the DB in turn, there was no dialogue option to chew them out about it, nor any mention of the failed hit by the recruiter.

Since these are all randomly generated events, it stands to reason that the game would not integrate them like some are suggesting. Yes, it would be nice to have the ability to confront the NPC. But, I am not sure how they could have these events be random and have the interactions like you describe. At least to the degree that the game sends assassins after you.

I just put it down to someone impersonating an NPC to hire the Assassin and that is why the note indicates them.

I have 10 of those notes and none of them tell who or where sent the assassin.

I got a hit from a child in Solitude. I didn't know that children hired people to kill other people.

I don't quite understand your post. Are the hits truly random, or did my character do something to trigger them?

I'll add to this that a DB assassin attacked me about 5 minutes after leaving the starter dungeon. That has to be my oddest encounter with these events so far. No way I ticked anyone off that would have had time to organize that lol!
