confused about dunmer

"I thought that the Chimer became the Dunmer due to Azura's curse..."

"They did. Although some Ex Ashlanders are called Chimer, although it means somthing different. Basically OP didnt know much about ES lore."

the above was two people discussing a certain thread on skyrim forums. like the first person i thought the dunmer were transformed from chimer due to red mountain events so i was hoping if some one could help me understand what the 2nd person ment. would be much appreciated ive looked on imperial libary n UESP, but couldnt find nothing that relates.

...I think the second person is spouting nonsense.
I've never heard of the ashlanders being called Chimer, and the appellation wouldn't make sense.

However, I just noticed (thanks to bittergreen smoker in the Phylogenetics thread) that the Nu-Mantia intercept says there ARE still extant Chimer:
Gypsy Moth dustmemore insert - it should be noted here that it is always foolish to think of whole races sharing like minds. "Ayleid" is as much a metaphysical designation as it is a cultural one. Just like the earliest Chimer who orphaned themselves from the Velothi Exodites, but remain Chimer today, large numbers of Ayleids showed more interest in the immediate earthly needs of agriculture rather than the magical needs of concept-farming. This distinction becomes important later, when "Ayleid" begins to designate other, and ofttimes foreign, agencies. - http://www.imperial-library.info/content/nu-mantia-intercept-letter-8
but those wouldn't be ashlanders.

The "Velothi Exodites" mentioned are the group that became the Dunmer, ashlanders included.

I don't think most people know that, the2crow.

Regardless, the second comment is incorrect. All of the Chimer that went on the exodus became the dunmer, and each and everyone of them are proud to be dunmer. Also, never have I seen, heard, or mentioned anywhere that ashlanders, ex or not, would call themselves or be called Chimer.

I don't know about that. The Nu-Mantia Intercept is pretty clear that the Chimer are still around, and that they broke off from the Velothi Exodites before the Chimer were cursed by Azura. They are very much the "exodites of the exodites", and had a long period in which to do sever their ties with their Chimer brethren. There probably aren't very many, and I'm not sure what exactly they needed to do to be "orphaned", but however severe the break was, it must have been enough for them to escape Azura's wrath.

But...it was only the ones living in MW that were screwed out, which was my point. Those that stayed in Summerset enjoyed the perfect weather and wouldn't want to leave such paradise.

I believe that's because the ones that stayed in Summerset would never have been considered chimer in the first place, they would just be any regular old altmer.

The Chimer only became the Chimer after following Veloth out of Summerset on their exodus to Northeastern Tamriel. I don't know that there were actually many physical/genetic differences between the Chimer and Altmer before the events at Red Mountain. The Difference between the Chimer and Altmer was cultural, religious, and geographic.

"The Difference between the Chimer and Altmer was cultural, religious..."

Which is what it really only takes for a race to separate from another. The only real difference between a Chimer and an Altmer is religious differences.

Why would the Altmer tolerate descent in their perfect society? I would venture that any Chimer that remain are elsewhere.
