Is Conjure Familiar always a wolf?

Just wondering... Is conjure familiar always a wolf? Or does it change according to race or conjugation skill?

As far as I can tell it's going to be a wolf forever, got it first at skill 20 and nearing 50 it's still a wolf.

Makes me wonder why they don't just name it Conjure Wolf.

Yeah, no kidding. I was hoping it would go to a bear or saber-cat as I increased my conjuration skill.

Most pen-and-paper fantasy RPGs have rules for lots of different types of familiars including the traditional imp (tiny, flying demon) and other magical creatures.

I thought the traditional form of a familiar was a cat, usually black? Or at least both have been used at different times...

Might as well called it "summon wolf "

As for traditional familiar it depends on what region you're looking at, it could range from crows, snakes, cats to goats, bears ect. There really is no animal that could not be considered for a spot as a familiar.
The black cat familiar is something that was coined in Europe and made famous in cases with the Witch Trials throughout Germany/England and France where it mainly took place.
As for Norse/Northern Europe mainly wolves, crows/ravens, foxes.

Give me the AD&D Find Familiar familiars any day. Roll a D20! Toad, rat, raven, cat, snake, bat, etc. Somebody must have a link to that table.

Kind of bumed out that I can't summon Spriggans, Wraiths, Wisps, Skeletons. I have max Conjuration and all spells including Thrall spells so if I want to summon a Spriggan I first have to find one that's dead and raise it. :(

See what I find odd about this isn't wouldn't be hard to even have put it in from the start, simply have it coded so it does the animation and effects that are used to summon the wolf and have it spawn a that does not perceive the player as a threat but everything else as....
I think it was a rushed job....
That or they thought that a Barbarian Nord that the story was designed for (it's really the only race that makes the game flow correctly) would seem cooler summoning a wolf and not the undead.....

In mythological terms or RPG terms?

In RPG terms, a familiar is just a summoned assistant to casters and can be anything from a wolf to a dragon, depending on the level of the caster. D&D, for example, has all sorts of different familiars you can choose and all of them add different bonuses to the caster when summoned.

Nevermind what I said,I was wrong and just spouted nonsense gathered from a quick google search :)

It's such a terrible spell, I don't even bother learning it. Just use bound weapon spells to level up faster and get to the atronachs IMO.

The conjuration in Skyrim does seem bit lack luster compared to previous titles I agree. I think they must of thought the permanent zombie thrall spell would make up for the lack of summonable creatures in game but at the end of the day its just like a companion and loses its charm pretty quickly.

Maybe its just me though having a problem with raising zombies that have a better complexion than my character.

It is a really terrible spell to begin with, most enemies will destroy it in 1-2 hits.

Conjuration (and magic in general) in Skyrim is reasonably gimped. Why don't we have: Conjure Mace, Conjure Axe, Conjure Greatsword, Conjure Warhammer.

Seems ridiculous.

If you hire Belrand in Solitude as a follower he always summons a familiar. Comes in handy so you don't need to summon one.
