Conrad Kellogg, You're Killing Me!

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 5:02 pm

I meet him at about level 10 or 12 while I'm working the main quest. I really like this part of the game: I like the quest, the dialog, and so on. But I cannot just kill him.

Oh yeah, I can KILL him, if I use a certain small nuclear device that I find on-site. Yeah, hit him with that he goes right down. But where's the challenge in that? I feel, honestly, a little bad about it since, in the end, he wasn't an awful person.

The second time (at level 10) I met him, I thought I was up on my game. I had a plan and everything (and how many people throughout history have died thinking THAT), but wow he was a no go. No matter what I did, I couldn't stay alive long enough to kill him. I had 19 stimpacks and I used them all. And I still died.

In frustration, I returned to raw nuclear energy to take him out. But I didn't like it. It still didn't seem right.

What am I doing wrong? I can't avoid the ambush he sets up for me. And he's capable of slipping around (through) the building to flank me. Of all the people/mobs I've fought in this game, this guy is the one that's killing me ... again and again.

For me it was tough the first time, especially with his

Spoiler
Stealth Boy
since I had no idea where he was, but, it's only him and 2 of the weakest synths ever.

Haven't used the bomb method, but I found that grenades worked really well as well as my shotgun once I got him down to about 1/3rd health.

He is a toughy, I'll say that, but the rewards were worth it.

I think the biggest thing for me to remember was to eliminate absolutely all other threats in the building before I went anywhere near him. On my first time, those doors opened and more of his goons poured in. Sheesh.

Before you trigger the dialogue walk around and drop a bottle cap mine or two behind the console he is standing next to. That slows the bugger down quite nicely.

"The doors opened and more of his goons poured in." Ouch, that would svck.

He is by far the toughest opponent I've faced in the game. It's his damn gun. He shoots me twice and I'm near dead. I haven't tried a shotgun - generally don't use them - but that sounds like a pretty good option since I'm standing right there.

I had some success using a mine, but he runs around the building to avoid it. Really. And then, like I said ... two hits.

I also had a hard time as he hits hard! he is also the first NPC that will actively DODGE grenades! he is fast on the stairs. gotta corner him, but he pretty much runs you out of that room unless you have superior firepower. Mines sound like a great choice to soften him up :) (I have rarely used them)

Meh, i just now VATSed his synths with headshots from a .44, ran to the hallway i came from and dropped few bottlecap mines. Meanwhile Corn Flakes suffered from a dementia attack and forgot what he was doing here, and a headshot later he crumbles on the mines i left for him :P

First time was tougher since didn't use godmode (by which i mean stealth), but still nothing too special. Of course i was over level 30 by the time of the quest, i prefer to do side quests before tackling the main.

That's kind of an awesome idea. :)

Yeah, I learned that the very hard way. I tried retreating the first time, dropping back to down the stairs and into the "office" area, but then he starts shooting me out of "nowhere," if you get my drift. He had circled around the other hallway and attacked me from behind.

Sneaky, he is.

He's definitely one of the toughest fights. Grenades helped me through it.Fun fact, Kellogg's voice actor also voiced Thane Krios in Mass Effect.

I had a lot of trouble with him too! I think he killed me at least 6-7 times. I will admit I am not the best combat fighter in most video games (when I hear a super mutant in the streets of Boston, I tend to run the other way and find a different route to my intended destination if possible, or try to find a safe sniping location to take them down), so dying isn't necessarily a rare occurence for me, but Kellogg was worse than most. I ended up beating him through unashamed use of chems, which my character will only resort to in extreme situations when I get tired of dying more than 5 times in a row (I found that Jet and Psycho with a Med-X chaser was the most helpful combo to prevent the two-shot death that people describe above), followed by several shotgun blasts while he was moving slowly enough (due to the Jet) for me to find him and shoot him before he could run away.

I love his voice acting. I believe - I could be wrong - that the same actor did the voice for Madanach in Skyrim. They sound the same, anyway. And it's ironic that those two quests would be my favorites in both games. :)

I really like Kellogg's character. I like his backstory and how he arrives - emotionally and psychologically - at this point in Fallout history. I hate him when I enter the room and afterwards I feel sorry for him.

And before anyone says anything, I admit I'm being silly.

I feel as though some diplomacy with an attempt to talk him into standing down should be there (Beyond give me my son or else). Even if it didn't work I'd feel less bitter about it. I knew that when I met him he wasn't all bad because of the "Damn it you're persistent. It's the way a farther should act" comment.

Yea, gives us a fancy dream sequence, but it's meaningless to prove "He's not a bad person" if I'm already able to reach that conclusion before having the choice with that information. And I don't have that choice.

It's not like killing him helps with finding your son after all. Well, it did, but look at it in terms of "I didn't know about that cyber implant yet".

I just looked and he's not credited for Madanach, but who knows? He's really a great voice actor. They utilized A LOT of great voice actors in FO4, IMHO much better than previous titles.

I quite like Kellogg, too - even if he does kill my husband and steal my kid. Great character!

I found it fitting to kill him with his own .44 ammo he'd left behind.
