Consequences of becoming partially soul trapped?

Post » Tue Nov 20, 2012 8:08 pm

So I either have to become a vampire or be "partially soul trapped" in order to enter the soul cairn.

What are the effects of the partial soul trap option? Are they only temporary (like, only applicable in the soul cairn)?

Thanks.

You're a bit weaker inside the soul cairn but once you get the gem back there aren't consequences.

Weaker: -45pts to Health/Stamina/Magicka
Gem: The soul gem that houses the taken part of your soul will be able to be retrieved.
All stats will be back to normal and you can re-enter the cairn anytime without repeating this step.

The weaker stats don't really matter much in the Soul Cairn unless you have zero ability to defend yourself.
You've made it to the portal, though, so you'll be fine. No worries.

Ask Valerica after retrieving the Elder Scroll. She will tell you you can get the gem back. If you add that as a quest, you will get a marker pointing to the chest where is located. Be sure to eat a soul husk before coming near the chest since there is one of those soul svcker gems floating above the chest.

There should be a misc quest listed for its retrieval. Disable all others and the arrow should point the way.
If not...
Spoiler
Head west from the entrance to the Boneyard until you hit a building with one of the massive floating soul gems. Take a gentle right to find another large soul gem on an even bigger building. Navigate the ground level passages until you reach the teleporting device. Your partial soul gem will be atop the building along with a chest and pg.9 of St,Jiub;s Opus.
Note: May as well grab the page. It's pg9 of 10 pages needed for Jiub's misc quest.

You can return no problem and you won't be weakened this time.

Thanks. I had a panic attack thinking I couldn't go back... lol and I think all my auto and hard saves are from after that. Sure got some nice loot while I was there from those Keepers.

Hmm. I don't recall ever getting a quest to retrieve the gem, but I have been to that location. I looted the chest and opus page and any other loose items, so maybe acquiring the gem before talking to Valerica prevents the quest objective from being assigned?

If you get the gem before talking to Valerica, no you will not get a quest. OTOH, once you have the gem you don't need to the quest, your problems have been fixed already.

I may have picked up the gem already... due to my curiosity and exploration haha. Will check my quest log.

So obviously I chose to let Serana trap a portion of my soul in a gem.

But the other choice, turn into a vampire. Does she turn you into a Vampire Lord? was that the second opportunity to change your mind on the matter?

Yes, vamp lord. I am pretty sure the DG are not going to be happy about that.

My game must be bugged. I was on the Dawnguard questline and I chose the vampire option, and nothing happened. I returned to the fort, and they still gave me quests, I could buy stuff from them. There was no reaction from them at all.

Well I am playing this though as dawnguard, no vampire. staying true to the blood of hircine. Its not in my character's nature to turn her back on the companions either. Doubt Aela would be pleased haha.

However does the dawnguard "scan" you more then once? How would they know you became a vampire for the scroll? I wouldn't mind doing a play through as a vampire lord. but I don't want to be stuck in that form all the time living in darkness.

I'm on PC. Maybe it's because I have a lot of mods. I know it's not from using a custom race mod. Also, my character's appearance didn't change with vampirism. No glowing eyes, face looks the same, skin tone didn't get more pale.

Does the gem that we recover (the one we're "partially soul trapped in") turn into a black soul gem in our inventory or something? I never noticed it in my inventory.

I recall reading about that somewhere - and I thought it was here - but now I don't see it.

Thanks.

I don't believe so. I just finished that part of the quest and I think you just "absorb" it or something. I never found it in my inventory, and I think Valerica says that all you need to do is touch it and you'll get your soul back. I think that includes consuming the gem itself.
