Considering any other sword and shield fantasy games anyone?

Post » Wed Sep 21, 2011 5:25 am

I've always been a big fan of the epic medieval fantasy genre, stemming from the amazing mythological books I read as a child; the Arthurian legends and LOTR. This is why :tes: games have always appealed to me. I've tried other fantasy RPGs, but nothing came close to TES' level (except Dragon Age: Origins). I thought I'd try my luck (you don't take risks on a TES game; it's a given it will be amazing) on other fantasy RPGs this year, so I'm considering picking up LOTR: War in the North and Dark Souls.

so...
What do you guys and/or girls think about these games?
How do you think they compare with Skyrim?
What are your hesitations with buying them (if you're considering them as well)?
Have any other game suggestions?

I'd say that Skyrim's very existence counts as a pretty insurmountable con to any other swords'n'sorcery game...

Unless Dark Souls comes to PC that's not even an option for me. Which svcks, because the game sounds like a lot of fun.

As much as i love the elder scrolls im not a fan of magic and barely use it in the game , but will there ever be just a normal historic medieval game that would be my ultimate game .

I'm mostly with you. I'm more into the physical combat (usually hardly ever used magic in Past TES games, except to heal myself, which beats having to carry around tons of healing potions). I think the magic in Skyrim will appeal to me more, though, so will use it more.
Mount and Blade is my favorite medieval action sim. Graphics aren't great but gameplay is excellent. Definitely just buy it. It's dirt cheap too.

Depending on your skill level, Dark Souls might be something you might want to pick up although if your the type of gamer that throws a controller when you lose then you might want to pass on getting Dark Souls. The LOTR game sounds ok but I'm not a fan of some of their design choices and they violate my 1st video game rule which is, the game needs to have character creation. Other then that you could try Oblivion and Morrowind again.

Dragon Age Origins - Fine game, imo.
Nothing is going to come close to Skyrim for me, but Kingdoms of Amalur looks very interesting, a few people saying it might be what Fable 2 could have been, and more, and Ken Rolston is on board for that one.
As for the two in the poll, can't rate them, but I don't even want to think about War in the North, I think I might just be setting myself up for disappointment.

Dark Souls I think is going to be great. I loved Demons Souls - it seriously kicked my a$$ at the start, but once I got the hang of it, it turned into a real gem. LOTR I'm not sold on yet, but we'll see. And of course, Skyrim = :icecream:  :woot:  :tes:

Reckoning will be an amazing game but it doesn't come out until Feb 7th.

I think I'll be good with Skyrim for a while. Maybe I'll think about another game when I come out of my lair next year.
