Consistent Crash at Thorn : Fallout: New Vegas

I am experiencing a consistent crash when trying to approach Thorn in Fallout New Vegas. The crash will always crash in the same spot, the crash happens when the video freezes.

I use to be able to approach Thorn before the latest patch, now I can. This crash also happens in areas around Thorn (to the south), on the west side of New Vegas.

The game does not crash to desktop anywhere else.

The video is with no mods turned on, I do not use any Archive Invalidation Invalidated mods, I do have 1 archive invalidated mod (Type3body) which I manually update. I am not running NVSE.

I have read that Thorn has it's fair share of crashing issues (FONV Wikia), just curious if this has a fix or is being looked into.

Actually I should elaborate that my situation isn't completely the same. I can't get as close. Maybe 100 yards in all directions around Thorn is a CTD zone. I can't get to Miguel's Pawnshop, Westside, or the South Cistern either because of this so it COULD be a different problem.

My default settings are ultra high and lowering them doesn't allow me to get any closer.

I just reinstalled from scratch FNV, booted my save before the crash line... still crashing to desktop. This has to be a product bug, and not a mod error. Note: I am also running everything on ultra high.

I have the same problem, except in this case it's Vault 22 that I can't get near. I've tried about 10 dozen different things, and it always crashes.

With the new patch installed, the crash still happens. :facepalm:

I've also noticed that if I approach from the South I can get as close to the Thorn as Azomoth in the video. Other approaches are still an issue so I'm still cut off from the other regions I mentioned.

Once got a similar crash at Jefferson Memorial in FO3.
Seems to have been a known issue, affecting a couple of people, but afaik there never was a fix for it.

Allegedly the cell got corrupted somehow and after that there was nothing you could do about it.
I had to teleport using the console to continue MQ.

Who knows, both might be an engine bug with similar origins.

To the people experiencing this crash- does it also happen when you travel down towards Vegas from Griffin Wares sacked Caravan or whatever it's called? My game CTD's in exactly the same spot as this video but also does in different places around the wasteland to what's listed here. I didn't think anyone else had this issue, but now I'm wondering if it is the patch. Hopefully it is because then it might actually get addressed quickly if enough people are having this problem.

Everyone having crashes, give the following a try. It may not work, but I solved some repeating crashes in Fallout 3 this way. For instance, I was crashing everytime I tried to exit the Air and Space museum and this worked.

Open the console and type PCB and then press enter.

This purges the cell buffer (Something the gamebryo engine sometimes struggles to do on its own) and stops some crashes. As I say, it may or may not work, but it's a worth a shot.

If it does work, remember to save and exit the game and reload if you want your achievements to keep registering.

Sorry to hear it didn't work.

Does eliminate cell buffer build up as the cause.

As a test, do you have an earlier save you can go to and use to back track to the Thorn? It may be useful to pin down WHEN the error that caused the crash occured. A pain in the butt I know, but it could help pin down the issue.

I have noticed there are a lot of NPCs in that area. Anyone knowledgable enough with the GECK to be able to check for scripts on the NPCs? Maybe a buggy script?

I made a new character with god mode and all map markers enabled to get closer, and then I walked the rest of the way. Now it works fine. It was only that character that was corrupted.

You might want to give it a try just to diagnose the problem. Your issue could be completely different.

Got my achievements last night, started a new game and fast travelled to a couple of areas that had been giving me problems, and it seems to be working fine now so it would seem you're right, so thank you
