Consistent Crashing

Ok.. I'm new to these forums, did a partial search on the subject to no avail, ergo the purpose for my post. I'm not new to Morrowind, have all four sets, Morrowind, Tribunal, Bloodmoon, and Oblivion. The prior three played extremely well, even considering the excellent graphics and the mode I chose to play in. However, Oblivion, as small as it is, seems to have quite a few bugs.

I have d/l'd the 2.1 update, but hesitant to apply it given the problems that currently exist. The game continually crashes, the window won't close and I am forced to do restarts only to find my last saved game will not, under any circumstances, reload, nor will the prior save. I just freeze while exploring and collecting herbs, or upon entering a new area via a door or a gate, and now even when I've shut down an Oblivion Gate. This is quite annoying. I'm rather surprised there isn't more interraction between npc's and pc's with Oblivion given the extent of the first three games.

Down to the point, I have all the necessary equipment, much higher than normal, but within range on my v-card, a tripple-core processor, bunches of ram both on the card and processor. However I do not use Intel, never have, never will, if I can avoid it. AMD is my choice for processors, they have proven to be more reliable in the past and I chose to stay with them when configuring this tower's hardware. The maching is not overheating, as per one post I read, so that's not the issue. I was wondering if the tripple core processor could be the culprit (?). I've played other mmo's mmorp's, etc, and they spoke of dual core processor issues in some instances.

Anyone have a clue on these processors or how to configure them for this little game? I'd sure like to finish it given the level I've obtained, and the fact that I usually won't put a game down until the end.

Thanks to anyone and/or everyone who may have some constructive suggestions here.
