Console code to unlock chest without key

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:13 pm

Is there a generic code to unlock a chest that needs a key to open it? I've gone through a cave several times searching every body, crate and chest and can't find the key.

:bonk: DUH should of known it would be something simple. I've only been playing PC games for a little bit so I'm new to using the console with games.

Likewise if you want to lock something use lock command. Simply "lock" will lock it with level it had, or use 0 for very easy, 25 for easy, 50 medium, 75 for hard, 99 for very hard and 100 for key only (if there is no key, you need to use unlock command).

Useful if you want to limit the mobility of NPCs ;)

Just remember that sometimes those locked doors that require a key are quest locations that you are given the key when you are given the quest and entering them before that by using the console can mess up the quest !

Exactly.

To the OP-- it's pretty much NEVER a good idea to use the console to work around things like that. If you come on something that's locked with a key and you're positive you've looked absolutely everywhere and there's no key to be found, that pretty much only means one thing-- you're not supposed to be able to open it yet. And that can easily mean that at some point in some later quest, you're going to get the key to open it. But when you do, it'll already be open and there's at least a chance that that'll break the quest.

I can honestly only think of one quest in the entire game in which you just stumble on a key-locked chest and you have to find the key for it. Every other one I can think of is key-locked to keep you out of it unless you're on the relevant quest, and if you're on the relevant quest, you'll have the key.

True i try not to use the console for that very reason. I was doing a quest for The Lost Spire and there is this chest in the middle of a trap and it needed a key. I didn't use the command since i all ready left the cave. I was just wondering if there was a code. The only other time I've run into a locked door was a cell door again for the lost spire and couldn't find a key. If I finish and can't find a key I'll go back and unlock it.
