Console Commands And Cheats

How else would I be able to fix a missing NPC, broken quests, or the endless possible bugs and glitches I'll inevitably run into?

I remember using the console to give me everything once. It bored me out of my mind. Now I learned that using the console to get items is no fun. Self control is something you have to learn. You know that using the console to get the best armour in the game is boring, so once you know what it felt like you stop doing it.

Well I do want console commands for the aforementioned reasons, but I'd like to have a turn on/off option at the beginning of the game, or an in-game counter in the statistics menu , that informs you
how many times you have used the commands, pretty much like in GTA: SA.

I like to play competitive even in single player games, challenge my friends, but there's always someone that ruins the competition by using the console commands to cheat.

The console is an essential modder's tool. It's needed to test a few types of mods. And plus, hey, cheating can be fun :P
I sure hope Bethesda continues to support the modding community and keep the console.

Is it technologically possible to have just the setstage join faction or placeatme commands in any shape or for so I can fix the game myself instead of waiting for a patch that we won't/will have to wait a long time to get that then misses out the most annoying bugs..

The command console stays. It's there for the modders to test things, as well as fixing bugs. It's not anyone's fault but your own that you used it to cheat and ruin the experience.

It's not a "cheat" feature.

i recall the mods/admins listing the console commands in cheat topics... so... im pretty sure it is a cheat feature, as well as whatever other purpose it serves.

In Morrowind I got stuck on fences all the time, and if I lose progress, I'll use a cheat to save time occasionally. Keep them i say

Console commands are very useful for creating mods and testing them. If you wanna cheat.. go ahead.. just don't lie and say you didn't. I personally don't see the point in playing if you're gonna cheat.

Using the console command to cheat can be fun, if you don't simply turn on god mode and play through the game.
There's some crazy stuff you can do with console commands, in a way more so in Fallout 3 than OB/MW

This. It's part of growing up. :)

Same thing happens in pen-n-paper RPGs..... games played by kids are "monty haul", with characters covered in uber-gear slaying awesome monsters without trying, frequently skipping many of the rules... barely a step above waving your GIJoe figures around. But then you grow up, and realize it's more fun the other way. :)

I use console for cheats, and i'm not ashamed to admit it. I absolutely hated the gates in Oblivion, especially in subsequent playthroughs... so I used console all the time to close them.

I also used cheats to max out some stats and visit the testing hall on my third playthrough.

For me, it added to the replayability of the game and didn't spoil anything.

I love the console and I love the duping and CE glitches, I can play straight or I can mess around, I like having the option. It's only a temptation if you lack disciprine.

/thread.

Nothing more to add to that, really...apart that, you know, willpower exists in Real Life, too, and not only as an attribute in TES games.

Although attributes were removed from the game, we can still have our willpower, so there's no reason to remove console commands.

EDIT*

I understand perfectly why the console is there, Im jsut saying its a temptation to use it for getting out of tricky spots in the game. I liked Konijin's idea to have the option to turn it on or of when starting a game.

How is giving the option for you to turn it on or off going to reduce your lack of willpower to resist that temptation in the first place? If you can't control your temptation to use the console just because it's there, how are you going to resist not going back and turning it on? If you have the willpower turn it off at the start and keep your temptations at bay from going back to turn it on again, you should have enough willpower to resist using the console commands in the first place.

the console commands are there for the testing of mods.

if I choose to use them as a cheat, its my buisness.

If you cant hold yourself back from using them in such a way.... than welll I think I went down this argument once before.

thank you and good night

So on my first playthrough of oblivion i was unaware of the console cheat commands, Though on my second runthrough id heard from friends that you can press ` click on an enemy and type kill.

You had the option not to turn on the console commands in Oblivion, since you had to change a setting in the .ini, iirc.

As for whether using them within the game to make things easy being a cheat of some sort... I have said it before and I will say it again - it''s a single player game. I don't care at all what anyone else does in their game - it does not affect mine. But I will admit to chuckling a bit when someone who abuses the console commands posts about how bored they are by the game, since they gave themselves enough gold to buy everything, toggle god mode when the going gets tough, etc.

Wow, really? You want it taken out entirely because you don't have the self control not to use it?!?!?

Lets weigh the pro's and cons of removing it:

Pro's
- The few people like you that lack self control wont have to worry about it 'ruining' their game anymore.

Con's
- The many people that do occasionally can't have fun by cheating anymore.
- The many people who simply play the game with cheats all the time can't anymore.
- You can no longer explore the game more freely to test things out.
- Modders ability to test their mods is reduced by about 95%.
- Modders can no longer test anything that's not visual or related to something like level design without setting up a way to get their stuff.
- Modders can no longer test scripting.
- Modders are literally screwed.
- No more good mods are made.
- You are sad.

I think it's pretty obvious what is the right thing to do, and what BGS will do.

If you can resist the temptation to go back and turn on the console at the start of the game, you should be able to resist using the console commands in the first place.

what can be done as a win win(i think) is if they have the option for the console in a text doc with something like: Enableconsole: 0

that way you would have to go to the file to turn it on so the modders can test and the cheaters(like me) would have enough time between saving and exiting with rage to turn on the console to get vengeance :whistling:

just a suggestion, ive seen it on a couple other games to so its not impossible
