From my Googling about for a solution, it seems many people have encountered the same lost steward problem I did. But, I never found a clear answer (I may have just missed it). So, I thought I'd share the solution I cobbled together.

THE PROBLEM:

Faendal was my steward. However, he then seemed to vanish. I tried using the console commands for moving me to him. That just put me in the main hall of Lakeview Manor, without him there. Tried the console commands to me him to me, but nothing happened. That suggests that he was lying somewhere dead, but I wasn't able to recruit a new steward as I should be able to. Darn.

THE SOLUTION:

Look up the departed stewards RefID the from ElderScrolls wiki or similar site. In Faendal's case, it was 0001348C. Obviously, substitute the information for your steward below.

Enter the following commands, which will resurrect Faendal in front of you.

prid 0001348C
disable
enable
resurrect 1
moveto player

In my experience, he was not sufficiently friendly to agree to be my steward. In fact, he wouldn't engage in dialog at all. Not sure if that is what normally happens in this case or not. I fixed it with the following console commands.

Setrelationshiprank 0001348C 4
Player.setrelationshiprank 0001348C 4

I was then able to engage in dialog with him, although the only option I had was "Follow me. I need your help." Having selected that and made him a follower, the next time I spoke to him, I had the "Would you like to be my steward?" option. Selected it and he was back to being my same old faithful steward.

Now, if I could just get him to stop standing in my bedroom watching my spouse sleep. Creepy.
