ex console guy, building pc

Post » Fri Mar 28, 2014 1:48 am

I gave in in and pre ordered the pc version, selling the xbox one...

haven't built from scratch in a while and going with an amd based system. is intel much better for any reason? want this rig to be a beast, not just for eso so theres no such thing as overkill here.

cpu: fx 9590

cooler: corsair h90

mobo: asus crosshair v formula-z

gpu: asus r9 280x

ram: corsair 16gb ddr3 1600 MHz (might grab the platinum 2400mhz)

psu: cooler master v750 vanguard series 750w

ssd: samsung evo 840 750gb

case: cooler master haf xb

screen: asus ve248h 24" 2ms hdmi led

just wanna make sure its all good without any issues, looking for criticism also.

im curious whether the corsair h90 stock thermal paste is good enough?

Just too cool to give a straight answer, imo anyways.

Oh I thought you said Blue pill because that's Intel's color.

To the OP, personally I'd be more interested in the Intel CPU, because AMD has said the FX is the last of the line for their high end CPUs. That 9590 runs at 220W and though you're adding water cooling I just wonder if it's worth it. Depending on who's benchmarks you go with the 9590 doesn't really outperform the I7-4770k at the same price, which runs cooler and uses half the power.

I personally would want a stronger video card for that CPU, but the jump from a 280X to a 290X is quite an investment.

I'd always replace the stock thermal paste with some Arctic Silver personally.

What you've got there seems like a pretty solid setup, TBH. I've been building PCs for nearly twenty years now and flip-flop between AMD and Intel CPUs. Whilst I currently favour Intel, the AMD CPUs are pretty darn good. You've got a decent amount of RAM and I certainly wouldn't advocate any less. If the 2400Mhz isn't too much more then go for that, if it is, leave it, it will only make a small difference anwyay.

The R9 280X is a damn good card and ASUS are a solid manufacturer too. One of my computers is stocked with ASUS parts and it runs really well and has done for years.

The H90 hydro kit is a good bit of kit. I run the H100 on my system (mostly the same as the H90 but with an extra fan) http://www.hitechlegion.com/reviews/cooling/liquid/33257-corsair-h90-h110?showall=1&limitstart=

The H100 is only really marginally better, depending on setup again. I have a huge case with plenty of space (Silverstone TJ07), so the H100 made more sense .

Overall though, that looks like a pretty good setup and i'd be pleased with that.

Switch out that Corsair h90 cooler and move up to the next size watercooler. The FX 9590 is a BEAST for heat so you will want to move up to at least a Corsair h100i with the 240mm radiator If you want to stay with a Corsair cooler.

Don't forget to include OS in your budget if the license you have cannot be transferred (or if current will be unsuitable for your new build).

Not saying you have forgotten, just it's an easy thing to forget that you need :)

Go with an intel CPU they're better for gaming. A 4770k or 4670k at least. For PSU pick something like a Seasonic or Corsair RM650 or something.

4670k/4770k (I'd go with 4770k if you have the money, better off for the future)

At least a R9 290, either the Tri-X or MSI Gaming, lots of people like and praise the MSI Gaming, so I'd go with that.

16GB is really not that needed so, unless you're doing some heavy multitasking, 16GB is not advisable and if you can save money on that, I'd advise you to do that. Also get 1866 or 2133 at least.

Swap out the PSU, for a Corsair/Seasonic or some other high quality.

280x is fine too though and will run eso fine, I'd just advise you to get something stronger for the future.

I would like to second this. The PSU is often overlooked, but it is the beating heart of your machine, always go for a good quality branded PSU for reliability and longevity, and with higher output than you think you need. I have had substandard PSUs blow out and damage other components. If you go for a higher output than you need right now, from a reliable manufacturer, there is no reason why a good quality PSU can't last you through 2 builds, or several upgrades. Whereas a cheap knockoff could wreck a build.

Mwave is a decent site.

Scorptec.com.au has the absolute customer service I have had with a parts supplier, though not always the lowest price.

pccasegear.com.au is also a good supplier.

I'd swap out the CPU/mobo for an intel chipset.

The only thing I'd add about thermal paste is that if you get interested in building PCs and replacing or cleaning components, it is handy to have a tube of the stuff ready.

Personally I am a 'scraqe off and apply new paste' type builder but not everyone agrees that is necessary - but if you ever have to take the CPU fan off or replace it for any reason, it is handy to have some thermal paste available.

It's due to Intel being better. Check any benchmarks. 4770K outperforms.

That setup looks like a blast. No need to worry about the thermal paste. AMD fx 9590 is nearly as fast as I7-3930K, little faster thatn I7-4770K. Make sure the fx 9590 natively supports 2400MHz ram clock if you are going to buy the faster rams. Otherwise you will need to overclock to get there. For corsair 16gb ddr3 try to use 2 RAM modules instead of 4. Instead of asus crosshair v formula-z I would prefer an equivalent ASRock mobo, because I made twice bad experience with ASUS, spacificly with the formula series and have got 3 ASRock mobos up and running just perfectly atm.

Unfortunately it does not when it comes down to games using discrete gfx only. I like intel, but I like AMD more, becaase they've got beter value for price efficiency, although the produce more heat and consume more power than Intel.
