Console Lifetimes

Post » Sun Jan 04, 2009 5:22 am

Has anyone else ever noticed that consoles using discs where you snap them in tend to last longer than consoles with disc trays? Maybe it's just a coincidence, For instance, my PS2 died within 1 1/2 years, yet my PS1 still works right now. My old Xbox lasted about 3 months before dying (and the general outcome of the 360s isn't much better), yet my GameCube still works.

But then I thought: Why does my Wii still work after so long? It doesn't have a disc tray or something to snap the disc on. But the disc is vertical :D Maybe that has something to do with it (like gravity and centripetal force).

And then yet again I thought: Why is my PC disc drive still working after 4 years? I have no answer to that :D Maybe its because it was built with quality unlike Microsoft and Sony's products.

Note: I didn't buy any of those consoles (my parents did) :D So don't go calling me a fanboy. PCs rule :D

I have owned a Playstation 1, Playstation 2, and a Playstation 3. All have lasted their entire lifetimes with no disc issues. :P

Well, actually now that i think about it, my PS2 had disc freezing and reading issues in the last months of its lifecycle (PS3 coming out).

My PS1 died on me when I was young. :(

But then my family got me a late birthday present and brought me the PS2. :)

And a few years ago, I got my PS3! :D

I think my PS1 had discs problems only, If I can remember. The disc tray never read the discs I placed in. Possibly the reason was because we stored it in a bad place, and the fact that it got smashed by accident.

So really, the consoles lifetime can last longer if you take care of it. But if it dies out very quick, then it's a problem with quality.

My Xbox 1 had trouble with opening the tray after 4 years of use. It finally died because of power issues though.
