Console Mod DLC possibility?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 4:21 pm

Hi all,

The more I look around these forums the more and more I begin to realise how big a part of TES modding is for the community and that this side of things seems to be one of the best features for PC gamers.

It's seems a shame that console gamers never get chance to experience some of the great mods a available. Although I realises that there will not be any form of constuction / creation kit for console users, what do you think the possibility is for some of the most popular 3rd party mods to be adapted and released as DLC.

Although this also seems very unlikely to me, it would make perfect sense to give everybody who has the game access to the best user creations.

What do you all think? Mainly aimed at console users but everyones opinion please.

Apology if it's a repeat thread.

EDIT: Just to clear a couple of things up.

The idea of mods as DLC is not to directly use 3rd party creations in game on console platform. I was intending to get accross the possibility of Beth taking the ideas created from the best mods and creations out there and adapting them as official DLC available for optional download.

Just to clear things up with the legal technicalities of modding console platforms and XLive - PS.

No.

Way to read the post and not just the title. Anyways, it would be pretty cool if Bethesda took some of the popular mods people have made and developed a dlc from them. I don't think they should be free, because they have to bring it up to their standard as well as keep it in compliance with ESRB, but it would be cool if they did

The only way I ever see this working is for Bethesda to take some of the best PC mods and convert it for consoles and release it as official content... MS is quite funny about content and would likely make Bethesda charge something for it, but if it is a great mod then it may be worth a price. Of course then Betheda would have to make an arrangement with the actual mod creator unless there is some disclaimer that states that Bethesda can use or reprduce any content made within their tool set.

I think they should do somewhat of what Halo 3 did where you can check "Leaderboards" and download maps that people have created on a console. or at least have a Bethesda Favorites section where you can download any of their maps or dungeons for FREE. I hope they have the modding tool on consoles as it seems unfair and very biased towards PC gamers.

P.S. This is not a trollflame towards PC gamers but if I play the same game and bought for the same price, I expect a little bit more equality.

It's simply not worth the cost involved in Bethesda choosing, reviewing and certifying the mods, arranging all the legal requirements, plus whatever cost is required to host them on the console networks.

There have been threads along these lines, and there seems to be a lot of legal rigamarole involved in user created mods on a console, along with some technical limitations. As a console player myself I'd like it, but I don't see it happening.

No chance. However if you look at some of the new features in Skyrim you can see that some of them may be directly or indirectly inspired by popular mods. Seeing as how these mods either added something to Oblivion or created a much needed fix it would be foolish for Bethesda not to look at what the modding community does and implement some of their ideas into the game.

A great example of this is found between Fallout 3 and Fallout NV.In FO3 people made mods that made it neccesary to eat, drink and sleep as well as mods that added companion functionality and weapon attachments. These mods fixed or added something to Fallout 3 and thus when Obsidian went to work on New Vegas i can imagine they wanted to address these and try to implement them. In my opinion Bethesda will do right by fans and try to give us all the most complete game possible but if you want real mods then you have to buy a new computer like I did. I recommend Newegg.com and consulting a local computer store as to what parts will work together.

Again I say... Follow Halo 3's idea with how they allow you to download usercreated maps and gametypes

Have the rules changed on talking about mods for consoles?
Anyway if sony & microsoft allowed it i think its great idea.....obviously there would be limits.
Who would get paid for this DLC anyway,modders?.....i dont know the law behind all that, but i believe its the modders creation in a way so they should reap some of the benefits off it.
It still would'nt be as good as owning a PC,but if allowed in some form...i think it would take of like a rocket.

Yes, you are totally right. I can't believe I forgot that the Elder Scrolls was known for its unique and creative game modes and it's various multiplayer maps.

I think it's a wonderful idea. It would be great to have an ability to experience modifications on The Elder Scrolls since I never have, with being solely confined to the console.

Maybe the same idea, but make it so it's with developer-chosen mods.
Bethesda is really hard to impress, as far as i can see.

The mods would be highly restricted because i dont believe there is a way to access some of the game's information via a console. However and alternative would be a forge like tool that would let you add buildings and edit values of things but it still would be highly incomplete since there would be no way to include custom scripting, meshes or textures.

Your sarcasm amuses me. I was merely using an example of HOW they could do it. Maps? Dungeons? It's the same thing

I say no, and that is only because most mods are simply garbage. Out of all the time I have spent on Oblivion PC I have yet to install a single mod. And I think I only had 2 or 3 on Morrowind.

Mods are just a way for the developer to be lazy in adding content and fixing bugs. They instead carry the mindset "Oh, if we don't do it, the community will." And quite honestly, that pisses me off.

The idea was not directly using 3rd party mods but to adapt the ideas into official DLC. The game will be around for 4-5 years, the consoles version of the game remains static where as the PC version keeps improving.

Sony and Microsoft wont allow it

Content issues (advlt mods/ Nudity/ etc etc)

The Tech on Board the PS3 and 360 not handling the mods

The fact that the DISKS and storage drives for each console are solid, and the Data on them cannot be altered.

Costs

More Costs

Impractibility

Not everyone likes the same mod everyone else does.

stop with these snip Mods on Consoles Threads, please, Consoles have their Advantages, PC's have their advantages. sit and wait when things change and Consoles have more flexibility.

Those games have extremely restricted options in their modding tools. The tools do not allow you to create a map or "gametype" (whatever that is) that can mess up the console or the game. Bethesda generally releases tools with nearly unlimited potential to change the game. With some exceptions, they are the same tools used to create the game.

To do what you ask, Bethesda would have to create a feature limited version of the Creation Kit. And the result would be that the mods released to console would be much less than what the PC players get.

And since I misunderstood the question on my first post I'll add this. I would highly suspect that the writing/design/creative teams from Bethesda started work on the conception and design for DLCs by now. I would bet they already have a number of DLC concepts in the works, from which they'll choose the ones they want to use.

If they waited for excellent mods to be made by the fans, then chose to recreate them for consoles, the time required would put the release beyond the normal "shelf life" for DLCs for a game. They probably would feel they were out of their "sweet spot" for selling them on the consoles and that the return might not justify the cost.

And that's beyond the legal issues, of course.

No. Discussing the possibility of user made mods being distributed through official channels without breaking EULAs or TOS is okay. It's only the discussion of violating the rules by directly adding user made content to the console versions that is against the rules of the forums.

No mod, not even Nehrim, would be worth all the trouble for Bethesda or Microsoft. Want mods, play on PC.
