Console mods: no, command line: please?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 2:52 am

Funny, I'm a PC gamer because I can't afford to splash out $60 every month and likely get less game each time. It always makes me laugh to see people use price as an argument AGAINST PC gaming, seeing as price is a large factor of why I am one. (The other factor is freedom, of course, but that's ideology, not practicality)

Well I hope you are willing to splash out $60 on a Skyrim PC copy. Please.

Every game I have bought on release recently has been 10 bucks cheaper on the PC.

If it's as good as I hope, then happily - otherwise I'll wait for sales. As far as I know it'll be $50, anyway :P

Console mods are out of the question,

It was recently announced that the ps3 version only (not the 360) of portal 2 will have steamworks, development tools, and cross platform play. This is a huge step in the right direction and who knows what the future holds for mods on the ps3.

11/11/11 Skyrim release.

40 days later. Steam Christmas sale. So, there's a discount if you can wait for it.

edit: mods won't happen for TES on the PS3. Maybe on the PS4 with TES VI

Yeah I know, $45-50 is the regular new game price on PC, but I left the $60 there because you might plan to get the Collector's Edition ($60-70). :celebration:

Not everyone can afford a thousand dollar console that needs to be updated with expensive equipment every year. I mean I can....but others can't. Lol

You can get pc(without moniter) that can play the lastest games for around $600 Less even., getting an old CRT is not very hard, there dirt cheap and people will just give them to you.

I think a mod kit is a feature and I think it by far the biggest and more important thing that I want for pc. The interface issues is nothing because they give us a mod kit. I don't how you can compare that with the stuff the "give" console users, I would much rather have a creation kit than some DLC(which we will still get) and a better interface in the vanilla game, sure it would be nice to have it all, but in the end I think us pc user are far better off than the console players.

These platform debates have raged since Morrowind came to Xbox. They will always persist. They will never be "won."

Console advocates will always argue that the simplicity of puting in a disc and playing and the feel of a controller is the deciding factor for them. Many will feel that the time expenditure in optimizing the software environment for games even once you've assembled the PC after researching the hardware and compatability thereof just isn't worth it to them. Some will argue that it isn't fair for games to remain PC exclusive, because they want to play them on their platform of choice as well. Some of them will live and let live, and others will argue that their platform is "better." Some will be outright elitists.

PC advocates will always argue that the PC allows mods, higher quality visuals, command console, and other functionality. Many will feel that the time invested in researching components, assembling a system, and optimizing it for gaming is worth the benefits and is also an educational experience. Some will also argue that console ports are ruining their PC gaming experience due to perceived compromises or redesigns necessitated by the console version. Some of them will live and let live, and others will argue that their platform is "better." Some will be outright elitists.

My position: Why does anyone care what anyone else does? It isn't going to affect you. 1) Console players did not make them begin producing the games on a multiplatform basis. Bethesda has made the decision to make the games multiplatform because it is more profitable to do so. 2) Likewise, PC players did not tie Bethesda's hands so that they could not provide mods on the console, nor is Bethesda intentionally showing the PC platform preferential treatment. There are legal and transactional hurdles making that a challenge.

I say enjoy the game on your platform of choice and let others do the same. Just my two cents. Do/think/feel what you will.

(...) overheating your console, and melting everything from inside out.(...)

Breaking the game (so reinstalling is needed) and corrupt game files are possible, but its definitely NOT possible to destroy the console by using console commands.

So how much would a pc cost that's going to dominate skyrims requirements?

You can get pc(without moniter) that can play the lastest games for around $600 Less even.,(...)

People are talking about PCs for more than 1000$, but I have to agree to Kefka.
I bought a PC for a friend for 580€ (~790$) that can run ANY game at 1920x1080 with high settings and is not even at its limits.
Would I've spent 100$ more on the graphics card it would perform like hell for the next 5 to 6 years.
I've spent about 1000€ on my PC, that was 6 years ago, and it still performs very, very well (high settings @ 1920x1080 for games like Oblivion, Fallout, Mass Effect, Dragon Age; haven't tried Crysis yet), with one update of a graphics card for about 120€ last year.
PCs are so cheap nowadays! (my first PC was about 1500€ and wasn't even high end when I bought it 10 years ago...)

Agreed. PC is my platform of choice, others may be Xbox or PS3 or all of them. Whatever works for you.

What I want is a simple cheat system for consoles that allows me to duplicate items, free money, advance levels etc. It does not need to be as complex as the PC, I just want simple cheats. It would help me roleplay drastically.

For the record, I play on PC if I have the specs. If not, 360. But ultimately I end up buying both lol. (Must support the beast.)

The problem with this is that Bethesda only leaves the console commands in-game to help modders with debugging. If people want to use them as cheats, that's their choice, but it's not what Bethesda views them as.

To make things clear, I'm not saying I disagree with this. It's a well known fact that Bethesda's games are typically buggy, so including debugging tools would be a great intention on their part.

this sounds like a good idea. Because there are some points in the game where you might want to fix a bug that prevents you from completing a quest. I agree, the console should be enabled on console systems for debugging.

One of the selling points/advantages of consoles is that there is no debugging involved, just put in the disk and play.

In the very least... There should be either a stripped down console or a platform specific menu with a few essential commands ~like turning clipping off (or if not that, then a "kill self/respawn" button that would allow the player to escape a terrain hole without affecting achievements).

My gaming PC cost around £700 (UK money, sorry I can't do the conversion) and will run anything pretty well maxed out. I fully expect it to be fine for Skyrim.

But then I look at my son, who plays on consoles. It cost £300 for a PS3, then another £300 for a decent large screen HD TV to play it with. Then he is constantly going out and spending £40 on games which last for a few days or a week at most before he is bored and wants something else.

When you add in all the other associated guff like controllers, keypads, gadgets of one sort or another, he has actually spent more on gaming then me, say, over a two year period. That's because a game like Oblivion or Fallout New Vegas lasts me for months and, indeed, years, because of the mods that I can add to create replayability. Heck, I even replaced my Morrowind GotY disk recently for a princely £3.99 and have had many hours of enjoyment out if it already.

I nearly die laughing when he moans about how Elder Scrolls V won't have mods on his PS3..... :hubbahubba:

Oh really?

scn byebyeoblivionref explodeshort do_once ; why? :Pbegin gamemode	player.SetRestrained 1	if (do_once == 0)		player.PlaceAtMe EndgameBattle 2048 100		set do_once to 1	endifend

Those command right there will freeze the player in place and place 2048 copies of a 5+ megabyte NIF file right next to the player (for a grand total VRAM usage of 10 gigabytes). That would murder computers and consoles alike. If the player figured out what was going on, a simple push of the power button would fix it, but, even a second or two after the command is executed, most computers become so choppy that you can't even bring up the console.

The original 360 didn't need help to melt, and while the newer ones are more resilient the cooling isn't any better.

I don't need mods to be happy, I just want some cheats, easy?

-Free money cheats, maybe 1000 Septims (Or whatever the nords use) for cheat input?

-Item duplication?

These should be fairly easy to implement. Many games already have "cheats" so there is no problem.

Well, I would, but I don't want my somewhat powerful computer to explode.

So, i don't see that it's all that bad really.

Did Oblivion lack cheats on the consoles? I know Morrowind had button codes to refill health, magicka, and stamina. I don't see why they couldn't hide cheat codes in game, as my (admittedly faulty) memory tells me that most games had them back in the day.
I just don't see a full fledged console working on xbox.

Well, I tried it out for you. :P

My computer (which is pretty powerful) went *choke* a few seconds after I ran the commands - couldn't bring up the console or menus to quit the game. I had to run Task Manager and kill Oblivion that way.

Of course, there are much easier ways to cause Oblivion to crash, namely:
