Console mods: no, command line: please?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 12:26 pm

Console mods are out of the question, but is it possible for Bethesda to give console gamers at least a command line? This may be a terrible stereotype, but most gamers who play enough to get into modding are serious enough gamers to have. bought the needed accessories like the controller keyboard...

The console commands are just as potentially damaging as user made mods. There is too much possibility of someone damaging the console.

I really can't see Bethesda making a restricted console for the few users who have keyboards on their consoles. A debug menu with a few simple commands might be possible.

No offense, but if you want interactivity and control so bad you should really play the game on the PC.

Consoles are not computers.

Can't think of a better answer than that. This applies to pretty much every request regarding PC features to be added to console.

As if it wasn't enough we PC gamers having to deal with the fact that games nowadays are primarily developed for consoles. You guys should stop asking / complaining, you already have the maximum support from multiplatform developers.

It depends on what you do with it.

There will always be some maniac that will spawn hordes of NPCs, eventually breaking the game, overheating your console, and melting everything from inside out.

And it can mess up with your saves pretty bad, as well break many quests, mechanics, scripts and AI if you don't know what you are doing.

Okay, have your dev console. Enjoy entering long commands with a controller.

I hate to be that guy, but consoles really ARE computers now, in fact, they always were (hell, I saw a guy put Linux on an NES). But really, that's technicalities.

They're called cheats, console games used to have them all the time. There is no need for a "PC solution", when a few button codes would do for things like Toggle Collision and God Mode.

No, they are not simple cheats.

They are tools, used by developers only for debugging the game and tweaking it. Implemented on the PC for the sake's of modding only.

If console gamers need to stop complaining about stuff like this then PC gamers need to stop complaining about the game being "dumbed-down" because of the consoles.

It's a two way street and considering you PC gamers get tons of features that console gamers don't, I think it's you guys who should be the ones to stop complaining.

Yes, that's what I meant. If we have to deal with the fact games are being "dumbed down" they should deal that these things are never going to happen.

Yeah, with the responses here this thread is heading for closure.

The console allows limited access to files stored on the hard drive. Probably enough to foul up the console, certainly enough to foul up the game.

Since consoles are meant to be "insert and play" without all the "work" of playing on a PC, it would be a bad idea for Bethesda to risk messing that mechanic up.

As a side note, you can build a PC comparable to a console fairly cheap now, and you won't need to upgrade it until the consoles themselves get a new generation unless you want to.

Not everyone can afford a thousand dollar console that needs to be updated with expensive equipment every year. I mean I can....but others can't. Lol

Ah yes. So that's why you can buy a computer these days that costs about the same as an Xbox 360 and yet performs much better than it. Not to mention the other bonuses of having a PC to an Xbox 360.

Also, you don't need to update each year. Hell, with how some of the games are being developed nowadays (with console in mind first), you won't have to update until the next console generation starts (which will be in like 5 years or so).

EDIT: Sort of Ninja'd by showler :ninja:

Going to add in the fact that once you factor in the cost of your giant HDTV you have for your consoles, and then a PC that can handle todays games sometimes seems like the more appealing option :D

What? I built my computer for like 750, it's lasted me 5 years. I haven't had to upgrade it once and it can still play most of the games released cross platform nowadays on comparable, usually even better, settings. The only upgrade I could really see worth doing, frankly, is to get more RAM. Really, I could get 8 gigs for like 100 bucks no problem, and that's all I would need (actually probably more than I would need) to do to get another few years out of my system. Plus, considering all the functionality a regular computer has to offer in addition, surely it's worth the price. A console costs what, 300, 500 dollars? How many people with a video game console don't even have any sort of PC (not talking about windows) at all? I'm sure there are a few, but my point is people pay like 300 bucks for an Xbox 360, they'll pay probably around 500 for a decent pre-built computer. I just think it's silly. I'm not saying the 360 is bad or worse, I'm just saying claiming that to be a PC gamer you need thousands of dollars of expendable salary every year is just ludicrous.

ACTUALLY, the only real "feature" that is exclusive to the PC is the dev console. Mods aren't features. The Construction Set is not a feature either.

I don't know, nobody outside of Bethesda knows (unless there's a pair of loose lips in their employ).

Depends. If you choose your parts carefully, a $600 PC should be able to run Crysis at Very High with no AA at a fairly large resolution.

Skyrim specs will most likely be just a little bit higher than Fallout 3. If you have a PC that can run Fallout 3 at Ultra, with 8x AA, 16x AF at high resolutions with nice steady 40-60 frames you should be able to run Skyrim as well.

The new Creation Engine should be pretty well optimized allowing you to run Skyrim in a low-mid end computer with high settings.

I am building myself a $1500~ computer, I want it to last a long time so I am expending all this extra money on it.

That's a bit of a strawman argument there, I built this PC for Oblivion, and at that time, it cost me about $750. I did buy a new video card, ~$150 for FO3, and both games, and FO:NV run fine.

My big problem, starting with Oblivion is the CONSOLEIFICATION of controls and menus, which makes these games annoying to play on PC, and the general degradation of role playing games in general due to the financial need of making these games appeal to a more general console audience. The good news, if one can call it even that, is that I can use mods to fix most of it.

I'd wager that a lot of PC gamers here feel the same way, and I think that's why requests from console gamers tend to result in knee jerk negativity from some PC gamers. It's gotten much worse lately, with a DLC for FO:NV made only available to the Xbox, and this from a company who, let's face it, built it's success by catering to a base of loyal, hardcoe RPG players.

Skyrim will be a console game, because most of the sales will be on the console platforms. It's the PC players who should be asking for more consideration here.

I wouldn't mind really if all the controls were configurable.

Having to manually edit the INI to change the hotkeys, and having the mousewheel hardcoded to a specific function is just plain silly in a modern game.

Funny, I'm a PC gamer because I can't afford to splash out $60 every month and likely get less game each time. It always makes me laugh to see people use price as an argument AGAINST PC gaming, seeing as price is a large factor of why I am one. (The other factor is freedom, of course, but that's ideology, not practicality)

Less than a dollar a day can buy you a computer in a few years.
I know its seems far fetched but after 4 years you might have 1200+ dollars which could be enough to buy a new console(assuming its $300-400 and if one is out) AND a decent PC(at the time). then after that you just keep saving 1$ a day again until you need a new one.
