Constant Unbearable Crashes/Lockups

Post » Sat Nov 27, 2010 10:16 pm

I'm desperate, after installing a few of the greatest mods for Oblivion to date after a fresh install I am consistently getting crashes/lockups. It usually happens when the game randomly alt-tabs out, without me actually hitting the aforementioned two keys. I'm not entirely sure it's a problem with the game itself as I've had it happen in almost every other game I play minus the crash/lockup part, but I figure this is as good a place as any to begin my quest to solve this horrid problem.

And without further ado, my load order.

This probably isn't what is happening to you. I had a similar situation where I was being alt-tabbed out and had no idea what was causing it. Well, I had installed a program called "Switcher" which emulates the expose function from OSX. It tiles the open windows on the screen so you can easily switch from one program to another. Now, I had set it up so that if I moved the mouse cursor to the bottom right of the screen it would activate. However, it would still activate while I was in a game. But I wouldn't see the tiled windows effect, it just looked like it had alt-tabbed me out.

So, again, this probably isn't your situation at all. But sometimes problems come from odd places.

You need to figure out what's causing your system to try and notify you of some sort of status update in another window, as that's what it sounds like is happening. Oblivion does not appreciate it when it gets moved to the background regardless of how it's caused.

All I know is it has nothing to do with my Steam/Xfire overlays and it almost always happens when I'm accessing a function that requires the use of a mouse cursor.

Try this, go into My Documents/My Games/Oblivion/ and open Oblivion.ini. Search for a line "bBackGround Mouse", if it's set to 1, set it to 0.

Setting bBackground Keyboard to 1 got my keyboard's volume control working in game, maybe that solves your problem.

Seems like, oddly enough, unlocking the taskbar may have fixed the issue. But now it's grown apparent that the game is CTDing randomly as well.

So yeah, take a look at my load order, freshly ran through BOSS and see if there's anything wrong. I'm also planning on adding better cities to it fairly soon, just as a note. That is, if I can keep if from CTDing on me every five minutes.

Make sure you are using the latest version of HF, not the version included with OOO. Do not add BC while your game is crashing. Also, grab the SM DR patch from the DR page (or thread, don't know...)

I found cleanng some mods helped reduce my crashes. Do you hear an error beep before the game CTDs? Does it CTD in particular situations (like fighting a large number of enemies, going through doors, etc.)?

I would get rid of Living Economy and use Enhanced Economy http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25078

installing many large mods also sounds suspicious. aren't you supposed to activate plugins one at a time to prevent random CTDs?

I just reinstalled my mods (nearly 200 of them) without running Oblivion once in between. Works perfectly, it's stability is almost worrying. It's not FCOM setup though, so maybe that helps things.

Did you do the initial startup by activating one at a time like in the 50 Steps guide or did you just activate all and run?

Ran once after install to get the ini and folders in My Games sorted, after that threw everything in data folder, BOSSed, Bashed and played :) Also i said it's not an FCOM install so i didn't follow that guide, just utilised common sense.

Haven't seen any unexpected behaviour, and only one CTD so far in about 10 or so hours.

I would put off this switch until you sort out the CTDs too.
