Construction Set on Consoles

I'll get the PC version, but I do think that it would certainly be possible For Bethesda to select certain mods from the PC community which are work safe and stable and make them available as free DLC for consoles, with the maker's consent of course.

The problem with that is that gamesas is held liable for content they publish. Mods are published with zero liability. This means gamesas would have to take liability for something that they didn't make. That wouldn't happen without extensive testing, which would mean charging for it. Doubt many modders would be happy to see their work being charged for when it is free for others (MS would also demand a slice of the pie, as they do for all DLCs).

Larkin pretty much showed us where the nails are in the coffin, supplemented by the fact that the coffin is steel, we have no tools and the bolts are adding to the strength of the cover...no to mention that it now exists in an Void beyond our existence with no access, ever.

Now if only we could get his post on the front of this thread, and sticky it ALLL across the Beth forums, so people wont (and they will) ask/suggest/wonder/ponder/dream/wish for a CS on consoles.....

So as I understand it the two biggest reasons consoles can't have c.s. is: 1. consoles don't run games with a library like pc's do. 2. Microsoft or Sony don't want to have to police everything so they don't allow it.

Fair enough, however, I would argue that it can work on consoles. In regards to my 2nd point, the console set could just be made to work locally. Now I know ppl would be all what's the point to that? I want to download other ppl's stuff. Well I would like to have some c.s then none. As for the 1st point, that may be true. But then Beth could load the c.s onto a seperate disk, and sell it seperatly, or in a combo pack. More sales is always good. And then allow ppl to cookie cutter, similar to the forge. There is even that xbox keyboard controller thing which would I'm sure make using the c.s easier.

So maybe the c.s would be watered down on cosoles, but I'd still love to have something over nothing. Maybe no complicated modding, only work with things in the game. But that'd still allow for adding new buildings and characters, maybe quests and guilds.

The CS will never be released for the consoles for a number of reasons.

1) Bethesda created the CS to build the game world. They build the game world on the PC, just like how they use Photoshop and 3DS MAX on the PC and not on the consoles. So the main purpose of the CS is to be a tool to make the game development easier, that they then can give away their tool for free is just an added bonus.

2) Sort of related to 1, it's a waste of money to develop a CS that they will never use. They already built the game world on the PC, why would they develop specific console versions? It won't benefit their game development in any way.

3) The CS is a Windows program and heavily use the specific Windows APIs that aren't available on the consoles. To port it to the consoles would not only take a lot of paid development time, it wouldn't be easy either.

4) The CS use noticeably more RAM than the games themselves, and it's usage go well above 1GB when the terrain generator is used. The consoles doesn't have enough RAM to run the CS.

5) If there was a crippled console CS (why on earth would they release a crippled product!?), it would still eventually run out of RAM because the town got too big or whatever, and cause the console to crash. While a PC practially can't run out of RAM, it will just increase the pagefile.

Then there are the extra work on how mods should be distributed on the consoles and so on. Not to mention that a lot of PC people who try mods make their games unreliable and the PC starts to crash noticeably more, so more support is needed as well, not only from Bethesda, but from Microsoft and Sony as well.

They may never use it, but the console users would. I could easily see more sales of the game when there's a cs involved.

And to your other points: The cs would be a simple version of the CS we have. It wouldn't be the best, but I could see them enjoying the game a LOT more, if they have the ability to create thier own town, or what-not.

Anyhoo, doesn't really bother me, I'm a PC gamer. I just don't see the logic behind it.

Microsoft would never allow it as they don't want to lose control and think it wold hurt DLC sales. M$oft doesn't think of how it lost consumers like me to the PC. It was Oblivion and it's mods that moved me to the PC and now my consoles sit unused for the most part and if I do buy a console game it is likely a used game because I am used to PC game prices. I did get Fable III new, but it was $35 on Black Friday and it and my new 4GB 360 cost less than $200 total after tax because of $60 in gift cards they gave me back for the purchase. It was a steal.

Miscoroft also makes money off PC gamers. Firstly there's Windows itself, a huge cash cow, and beyond that there's the usage of DirectX and the likes, driver testing schemes, etc.

The one thing MS won't like is for you to brick your 360 and move to the PS3, but MS won't really care much if you move to the PC.

I dont want the construction set on consoles. I just wanted to know if it was possible.

Nothing is impossible, but this is pretty close.
Don't know exactly how the construction set works, but both the 360 and the PS3 use RISC processors so they're not really fit to run professional development tools.
Also, the interface isn't really fit as well, I think it would be ridiculous to build anything without a (decent) keyboard and mouse.

What they could do is create some "New Game+" features where you have stuff like 'custom game mode', or a simplified item and character creation kit, but I don't think they'll bother with that.

What could and should be possible is to be able to freely download and install mods on your console.
I guess that's not going to happen for many different reasons, but not because it's technically too difficult. Pretty sure the official mods are made with the very same construction kit.

I sure hope that they continue that philosophy of "develop on PC, port to console." Some had their doubts if that was the case with Oblivion (I'm not going to judge the veracity one way or the other). But yeah, obviously PC's had to be used for development.

A stripped down console that only changed GMST settings wouldn't be too demanding on the resources, but I agree, make the console users go buy the PC version. Consoles by definition are supposed to be stripped down and purposely limited PCs.

As another random thought, didn't some KOTOR mods make it onto the xbox somehow?

Im really against consoles, so im biased and hope they never see a CS, but realistically I dont see it happening anyways.

Why would you hope we never get a cs, even though it wouldn't effect you in any way? I don't wish you never bad against you?

Also I dont want consoles to ruin the CS. There would either be one gimped CS or two to make usage a easier for controller users.

How is would something on console ruin something on pc?

Whilst this is gonna sound cruel to console gamers, I actually prefer something to lure some console gamers to buy it for PC instead ^^, anything to help the PC market some more attention.

I think the fear is that by having to "dumb it down" to be usable with a console interface, the PC version may suffer the same dumbing-down. In the same way that console ports are immediately, noticably different in feel to a primarily PC game, primarily because of the differences in control scheme.

I can understand the fear, but it's irrational, Bioware managed to make Dragon Age with controls that matched the respected platform. The PC version will only be effected if the developers purposely only develop a single CS that is going to be on all platforms, which of course is stupid, but that would be the fault of the developer, not the console, because it's not as if it's impossible to not play to each platforms strength.

A CS wouldn't be dumbed down for PC users. We get exactly what the devs use. At least, we have so far.

Construction set would be brilliant for console. I used to be an avid PC user, but I just don't have the time or will power to keep upgrading, so I play on xbxo360 now...

Customising simply things like HP of enemies would really maximise the game for the console users IMO

A construction set on the consoles can't really work - most developers have a hard time handling even basic map editing (I know of very, very few games with map editors that can work with a console interface, and even fewer with map editors that actually involving editing things like terrain), and anything beyond that would be more or less impossible to really manage on the consoles. Without the rest of the features the PC CS has, a console one would be useless - empty chunks of land just don't serve much point.

Besides all that, Microsoft wouldn't allow anything much more extensive than a map editors anyways. There's a reason the console versions of Bethesda's games can't run mods (excepting Morrowind, which actually can if you can work out a way to get them on there), and it's not because Bethesda isn't capable of allowing it.

This

Wanting to be able to create and use more content for the games that you play doesn't mean wanting your console to be a PC. It just means wanting your console to be better at the thing it's most specifically aimed at: playing games. That's an entirely sensible thing to want, whether or not it's something that can happen right now.
