S.M.A.R.T control

Post » Tue Mar 15, 2011 2:20 am

I was just think about the S.M.A.R.T control and it remined me of mirror's edge. I was thinking if there could be an optional control scheme like mirror's edge so you can free run around :bolt: and shoot :gun: ... just a thought

SMART just makes it easier to get around the map. It's not freerunning like in Mirror's Edge. There are already 5-6 standard schemes included + you can map your own buttons.

This, also the SMART is a button.

Yeah the way the devs explained it it sounded as if it were a button pressed which has the computer detect the: direction you are running, direction your are looking in order to manoveur strategically without annoying cutscene-style actions like the 'Climb' in CoD.

Also I'm wondering if anyone will even use it effectively? I would love, rather than just pwning people or w/e the trend is, to bound about the favelas and all those maps, being a decoy for my team.

Well my suggestion to you is to become a light soldier or medium engineer and find a spot that will allow you to have a great field of vision. Then commence either raining grenades down on the enemy or putting your turret in an easy choke point. You will annoy a lot of people very quickly, and at least one will devote a few minutes to tracking you down. Then after they come after you go to a second location and do the same thing!

As far as I know you can shoot whilst using SMART, just with a hefty reduction in accuracy... and depending on the action of course.

You can't rain grenades, the devs want to limit grenade spam. Grenades mostly stun in different ways, from what I understand. They knock people down, but don't do very much damage.

This is not possible, as the entire cnotrol scheme of Mirror's Edge was built around Parkour, unlike in BRINK, where Parkour is only one button in the control scheme.

From what the devs have mentioned, I'm under the impression that SMART is just a button that allows you to easily do slides, trick jumps etc at the press of one button. All the things that you can do with SMART can be done manually, they just require more key presses / timing.

This is essentially correct.

However, holding down the SMART-button (instead of only toggling sprint) does not allow you to simply slide whenever you want it. This still requires the crouch-button. Only certain objects (such as the security-sensor at The Airport) allow SMART to act "intelligent".

Just want to add this: You can also do every move manually. Combine manually with the SMART button for the best performance.

Right, and didn't they say that people who do these moves manually will have an advantage over those who just hold down the button

Yeah, a very small differrence in speed, but one that would surely be worth it if you could master all the moves.

didnt the c.e.o of brink say that some of the moves are based off parkour in the ign video? so does that mean all we do is press a button to manuver or mix them together

There's an automatic button that makes you do pretty much everything (except sliding): from walhopping to vaulting to mantling to climbing. Doing moves manually is also possible. By doing them manually you will have a slightly better performance. Combining both is probably one of the better ways to go.

I pretty sure Richard Ham said this but, "We don't want to make a game were its either moving or shooting. We wanted to make a game that involves moving AND shooting."

I;m really looking forward to SMART. It sounds similar to the mechanics in Action Half Life and the Half Life mod The Specialists and The Opera.

Does anyone wonder if you can do tricks to assist in certain scenarios like if one light was being chased by another light (don't ask why he doesn't just shoot him), and the "prey" light does a backflip off a wall/container/etc. and gets behind the "hunter" light. So the "Hunter" becomes the "prey".

Oh, and then the original hunter realizes he has a gun ad shoots the original prey, but thats irrelevant.

There are no such things as evasive flips. However, I think it's technically possible to use a wall-hop in a similar manner.

Either way, it wouldn't make the hunter become prey all of a sudden, because the hunted one would still only use an evasive move.

He's saying that since snipers don't move, and Richard Ham says in Brink you have to be moving and shooting, Richard Ham would hate snipers since they are shooting while lying still (not moving). :)
Not sure if I articulated myself right, hehe.

I guess heavies can probably vault tables, leg-high walls and such... anything else I guess they're just gonna run into it like blundering idiots. Not much of a "smart" button for them, in other words.
